Bit before my time - Obviously I know of Roussell but was only made aware that Clement even played for us after he got the Rangers gig

Funnily enough I was in Gent in Belgium over the summer and a local recognised my top purely for the fact they flogged Roussell to us

Delorge was after Roussell.

Saw his goal away at Sheffield United, think only one he scored.

Think he got into some trouble over drug dealing or something years after leaving us?

This is definitely a shock signing, especially given the clamour for defenders and defensive midfielders. I can only imagine that Robins recognises that our season tailed off last season, possibly because of our lack of depth. He has just decided to pack the squad out a bit. 6 coming in and only Kelly, Godden, O'Hare, (Fadz in Jan) leaving. I suppose that's only 2 up from last year. I would be surprised if there wasn't oe more defence-minded player to come in next week. Looking like a good squad with plenty of depth.

My guess is he has a lot of potential and will be ear marked to replace Simms next season? EMC for Wright, so maybe a Sheaf or Milan understudy to come in too?

If we’re bringing in understudies we’re not actually improving the team. Our midfield is lacking compared to the teams we hope to be around and likewise, so is our central defenders. That’s in the now, if we can’t bring in an experienced CB it could just about wait till Jan. Midfield has to be a non-negotiable top priority because all it takes is injuries to Sheaf and Torp and Allen is a starter - good player, not good enough for a top half team imo.

I’m pleasantly surprised we’ve got Bassette in, but if it’s at the cost of midfield and defence, I don’t like it.

He was accused of match fixing. It was never proven and he wasn't charged but his club at the time Anderlecht sacked him anyway. He went on to have an OK career in the Dutch leagues but he never lived up to his hype.

I have a football fan cousin who lives in Mechelen, and although he supports the city‘s second team, he keeps abreast of all things KV Mechelen. He tells me that their fans are sick to have lost him, really rated him. He played 22 matches for them in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League, scoring 5 goals. Although the league is not as strong as the Championship, there are some good teams in the league and he must have something about him already. So here’s hoping…….

I agree I’m just thinking if we’re spending 2-3 m on this guy and EMC, who are unlikely to start, then what could be the strategy. It’s great to be spending money on depth but would expect the starting 11 to be a higher priority.

It now looks obvious that Burroughs went out on loan to make way for his wages, rather than the bigger RB cover we thought might be coming in

Maybe we just can't get deals through the door for the CDM and CB positions, we are in desperate need of.

We aren't going to go the whole season without injuries. Bringing in these players ensure we avoid / reduce both player burnout and remain competitive when those injuries inevitably happen. There will be players who will start on the bench and then probably get a run of 10-15 games starting all of a sudden.

I still think the club will be working hard on a midfielder (just gut feel) they have obviously just tightened up on transfer leaks and the recruitment / wider team setup appears strong and analytical meaning they wont be leaving any stones unturned.

Very happy with this, sure we need a DM, RB or even CB & LB would be higher priority but it seems the lad has potential.

These are the kind of signings that make sense. King & Robins know its a marathon and not a sprint. We all hope we're in the fight to go up this season but it's a tough league. Robins has more or less everything he needs to challenge this year, bring in a CDM and we can't ask for much more.

Say if we have a good season but lose in the playoffs. Simms & Wright bag 25+ goals each and end up leaving next summer. At the start of next season, we could be 35-45 mil richer to bring in a replacement while already having Bassette and BTA settled.

What I also love about it, is that it was a surprise. It's much better this way.

This signing caught everyone on the hop, no one expected it, no press got wind of it, and neither team leaked it.

That's the way business should be done, and it also means that big Doug could have plenty of irons in the fire for all we know.

Trust the process

I would say we need a 6 to come in before the window closes. It’s unsustainable for our midfield to hold up with the current numbers.

This is it. You sign who is available. You don’t go down the list and not move on until you’ve resolved a position. CM in particular we’ve had a few signings that have come close and will mean we’ve had to waste a lot of time getting them to that point. The sort of CB we want is usually free at the start of summer or not quickly let go, unless it’s a PL player struggling for game time.

BTA could be out for most of Jan playing in the African cup of nations and Haji playing away with the USA team. Could be why we have bought this lad in. To make sure we aren't light going into the crucial part of the season. Makes sense to me. Hopefully a CDM is next, I have a feeling we are looking for the right player and may have missed a couple of targets but the team don't want to bring someone in just for the hell of it.

Them days seem long gone . We have a very prudent owner and a sustainable process in place now . It may appear to hinder us in various transfer windows but the end game is the bigger picture

A more defensive minded midfielder for me is more pressing than a centre back. I think the young centre backs we have will improve over the course of the season with regular playing time.

Spot on, I understand the want for a CB but let's not get stuck in the idea that they can't improve. At least 2 have really good potential in my eyes. So let's do what we have been so good at and develop them. Sheaf had huge flaws in his game when he joined, but we have him plenty of game time and he's now essential.

I do think we need another midfielder ideally but I also think Sheaf’s injury has made it look like a more pressing issue than it perhaps is. Once Sheaf is back, which is looking like it’s going to be pretty soon, I think a midfield of Rudoni, Sheaf and Eccles/Torp looks pretty good on paper. The big issue is of course that Sheaf misses 10+ games on average per season.

Centre backs don't generally peak till their late 20s either so all of them have time and age on their sides

What I meant was both were before my time - But I was familiar with Roussell cause he was obviously a bigger name for us

Yes, it's pretty obvious we haven't run out of money, I think we will buy the right players when they are available. If not we wait. It's a proper 5 year plan.
