Eccles has gone from a nailed-on starter under Robins to a bench player for Lampard, and you can see it has hit his confidence, making him do things he wouldn't normally do.

He's a very good Championship player, but is going to have to adjust to the new reality of his role in the squad. There's no problem with his character, so I'm sure he'll continue to have a big part to play.

Do You honestly think Bassette would have scored?

I think he’s probably have ran it into the corner as we were being instructed, but even if not he’d have had a better chance than Eccles

Like when he ran it into the corner and then changed his mind and played it in to open space to no effect whatsoever?

Bassette has become a cult figure for reasons other than pure footballing ability.

That in itself was a bad decision to put himself over the team. He would never have scored from where he was and Bassette was screaming for it.
Bassette was screaming for it… but he was running away from the goal towards the right.

It was a poor shot but Bassette didn’t give him a great option either because and he’d have had to cut in on his left, it was a poor run.

Finally. These ‘intelligent’ runs I’ve heard so much about are anything but.

I dont remember that tbh. I thought I’ve made it clear I don’t particularly rate Bassette, though I thought he was good closing down in his cameo yesterday. But the basic point is it’s 2-1 and the right move was to not give away possession.

Quite a few players have gone from regular starters to the bench and vice versa under Lampard.
It shows there is good competition for places in the squad, nothing to be worried about.

Anyone else 'worry' for his position in the team as he's not getting starts anymore and grimes has signed?
He always struck me as more of a solid role player. Grimes and Sheaf are division leading players, Eccles isn’t.

For now, he doesn’t suit the system we’re trying to play with Torp and Rudoni operating high and wide for CMs, Allen suits it because he covers a lot of ground that Sheaf and Eccles don’t really suit.

I think he’ll stay we are gonna need all our players even if they are out of favour right now for whatever reason. We are bound to get injuries, suspensions or play different systems/formations between now and the end of the season.

In the summer if we get a decent offer (he’s just signed a 4 yr contract) and FL thinks he can use it to improve the squad maybe. But I still think Eccles is a decent championship player who gives his all for the club and has an impact when he’s on form. Sure his confidence may have taken a knock recently but so did BTA, Simms and others when they are out the team.

I don't see Eccles leaving in the summer. He's a good playe at a decent age with good experience, in poor form.

No need to make any kneejerk reactions and get rid of him.

If he’s no longer a regular starter and that good offers will come in

Not at all mate, 46 game season plus cup games.

Torp, Allen, Sheaf, Eccles and Grimes in that central role.

Sheaf is injury prone.
Allen has his spells out injured.

Leaves us with Torp, Eccles and Grimes
Add in the amount of games that these 3 will he heavily relied upon when the other 2 are injured, Eccles will be inevitabley in the squad.

Eccles needs to improve, it's simple as that.
I do believe he is a Championship level midfielder and he definately is good enough to be in our squad, but for me he isn't as good as Torp, Sheaf and Grimes.

Allen offers a completely different dimension with his work rate and experience but ability wise they are both similar

Eccles just needs to work, Kitching has proven this, as has Simms and Asante.

Eccles is a better player than Allen, the role that Lampard wants for that central CM is just better suited to Allen because he’s being asked to cover a lot of ground.

I’ll say it with Grimes we have one of the best midfields in the league. Grimes, Sheaf, Torp ,Rudoni are all class players (at least since Lampard has come in for Torp and Rudoni).

I like Eccles and see him as a jack of all trades but master of none. Can do nearly any role asked of him but he’s not as creative as Torp or Rudoni, doesn’t win the ball back as much as Sheaf and doesn’t have the supernatural lungs of Allen to keep pressing.

The problem therefore is I don’t see who should come out to give him their spot especially atm.

He will get his chance but needs to shine when he comes in imo

It's a squad game. Eccles will get his chance again just like sheaf will. You can't expect current trio to start every single game ffs
With the injured players coming back, and Grimes arriving, not to mention Allen and Torp now being ahead of him, I can't really see Eccles getting many league starts now this season.

He's still a valuable squad member, and a very useful sub to bring on and close a game out, but I think he'll be considering his options at the end of this season.

Eccles is a great player to have on the bench at this level of football, never bought into the he should be first name on the teamsheet some were saying but he's a fantastic option to have as 3rd or 4th choice and shows squad depth now

If he does, it will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Wherever that may be, you just know he will play a blinder whenever he plays against us at some point in the future.

I think with a preseason under Lampard and conversations between the two he can find his way back into the starting line-up. He's played an awful lot of games in the past two seasons so he's due a lull in his game . And there's an awful lot of the season left for the team to need rotating and resting so he will still be an integral part of the squad

He’s a versatile player and like Lats that will probably save him. He’s probably our second choice RWB, could fill in on the wing or anywhere in CM, even at CB at a push.
