I would have took still being in the tie before the game last night. Stunned.
Before the match, the build-up for us Crewe fans was more of a.. we could get to Wembley than a.. we should get to Wembley.
Whilst driving to the ground and listening to the radio it was all about how many you were going to score and how you were looking forward to winning something, how important it was for the city.. Nothing wrong with that I say. This can be strewed as arrogance, but for me it’s confidence. Selling out a stadium to get behind the team shows what size of club you are and that’s impressive, biggest ever attendance outside the final.. brilliant, I’m glad we were a part of it.
I do think though, you did underestimate us, Coventry City underestimated us. We have a very young team, we have very good loan players, we are just inconsistent. Last season we went 20 games unbeaten to get to Wembley and win. That has galvanised the club and given us belief more than anything else, but for some of your fans to say that this was our cup final.. well.. this just adds fuel to the fire of motivation. We have kids that are watched by 50+ scouts every week. They thrive on occasions like last night.
Football has become about money, not history and not how much support you have. Pure money. Except us. This season, at some point, we will have a full starting 11 that will be all from the academy. These players play with each other from age 8. This has built a very strong team spirit. anyway I’m digressing.. My point.
You outplayed us in all areas, all over the pitch, you didn’t deserve a 3-0 loss, but football is about goals and you didn’t score any and wasted so many chances, it bit you on the bum. Our team is exciting, but like I say inconsistent.. We are quite likely to go 2-0 down at home in 10 mins.. Then anything can happen. However we could go 2-0 up after 10mins.. That’s the way it is with young players. Yes you still have a big task but yes you have a big chance.. To be honest we get more intimidated at home than we do away. The game is wide open.
Forget our bulshy fans, they are kids, most Crewe fans get it, they know that we are unfashionable.. They know that we fight above our station (!) We are however proud of our recent history, proud we can make £8million on players in a single summer and proud to have beaten Coventry away and are reaching out to Wembley. I hope it’s a great game at gresty road, I hope it’s an advert for us both. Don’t think your better than what you are this is what teams like wolves do and it’s what makes small teams want to beat you even more, footballs 150 years old but it means nothing, it’s what you are now that matters. At this point you’re the same as us, League one, mid table, not going up or down.
Good luck for the rest of the season. After February.
PS. Awsome stadum. Stewards need to lose some weight!
