5 candidates on the list. 1 of them being Thorn others are high caliber candidates (heard that before) players not being tied down until they sort out the manager issue, Thorn has summer targets and knows who he wants to sit down with if asked. Now for the controversy A few clubs are now looking at making an approach for thorn to turn around their clubs as manager... so we may lose out anyway

Oh and another announcement next week. interesting thing is if they want a guy in place to talk contracts they would be looking at a permanent before the end of the season

NEWS: Manager appointment draws nearer
Posted on: Fri 22 Apr 2011
COVENTRY City Football Club have drawn up a shortlist for the vacant managerial post - and current caretaker manager Andy Thorn is a candidate.

The Sky Blues have been searching for a new manager since the departure of Aidy Boothroyd from the club in March.

Thorn has since taken on the role with support from Steve Harrison and the club have praised the pair for guiding the team away from the Championship's relegation zone.

The board is now closing in on making a decision for who should succeed Boothroyd on a full time basis.

Ken Dulieu, chairman of Coventry City, said: "Andy and Steve have done a very good job in a short space of time and the results really do speak for themselves.

"A great deal of change has taken place both at the Ricoh Arena and at Ryton and they have managed to take all of that in their stride and, in the face of some difficult matches, picked up a very good points tally.

"There has been a great team effort on and off the field and that has certainly helped the club towards a positive end to the season.

"Andy is in the running for the job on a permanent basis, with Steve as coach, but we have had a very strong response from some excellent candidates from around the country, reflecting what a prestigious and sought-after job this is.

"We have a duty to the supporters of this club that we go through the correct and thorough process in appointing our next manager. That process is well underway and is being conducted without the threat of relegation.

"We hope to be able to come back with a further update for supporters in a week's time.

"We've had great support in recent weeks from our fans and that has been very much appreciated. We've been doing all we can off-the-pitch for supporters with ticket offers for the final three matches as well as the kit launch, which is really capturing the imaginations of fans."

Paul Clouting, the club's chief executive, said that board isalso keen to determine the future of the playing squad.

He said: "Stage one of the jigsaw is getting the managerial position resolved and once that is done it will allow us to talk to players about the future and our ambitions for Coventry City.

"The manager is the key figure in shaping the squad so it is imperative to have that fixed and in place so we can continue building from there."

This seems like a no brainer to me. Give thorn the job now and then we can sort out contracts straight away. Before we end up with another sky sports friendly waste of time

AT is the right choice! The fans and players want him, give it to him so he can get a chance to talk to some of the players we need next season and try and keep them. Sounds like money will be available in the Summer? Typical that now we are playing well under Thorn other clubs are after him!

I don't think they would risk picking a manager other than AT because if it didn't work out there would be an almighty backlash from us supporters . Right or wrong if they are here for the long haul they should keep AT if only to keep the fans on their side .

AT will only go elsewhere if he is NOT offered the job here.

lets not worry about AT leaving, its more of a worry that SISU might not want him to stay

Would be happy if Thorn got the job, however i suspect behind the scenes SISU are wanting to see who else applies & if they have a higher profile that may be usefull in attracting new investors. All a bit "Peter Reid" i know!

SISU are a bunch of clowns, fully expect someone who had a good season 10 years ago and has done nothing since to be given the job. Just give Thorn the job, everybody wants him.

Maybe a decent gate today, some good play, a win & the crowd chanting AT name may convince them.. :thinking about:

Is THAT the big news from the Telegraph? :(

Come on Nick! it was the Telegraph, afterall it was only a few weeks ago they were wanging on about "The most exciting news in years" & it turned out to be Hoff saying he'd like to buy the Ricoh. They do have a bit of a reputation of biging things up a wee bit.

It would be nice if the fans were made aware of the potential candidates, other than Andy Thorn.
Surely, if the other 4 candidates were high profile, high calibre experienced managers, then they would already be in work, or waiting until the end of the season for the Premiership manager merry-go-round.

Unless we are talking of Martin O'Neill or Big Sam quality, then we must employ AT.

He knows the club, chose the players for the club (who want him to get the job), and for the sake of all long suffering Sky Blue fans, our board must listen to what we want or risk the backlash!!

Is the other clubs wanting Thorn speculation because it doesn't name any clubs and also there are no quotes from anyone official saying that?!

Slightly concerned by the "high calibre candidates" statement.

I just hope that the Board aren't "turned" by a "big name". You know the sort of thing - played in a world cup quarter final, managed Man City to a top six position, got Sunderland promoted, regular on BBC TV football coverage..........

I still have nightmares!!!!!

Theres two things you can read into this.

1./ Thorn will get the job but they have to play it by the rules, i.e. they have to advertise the position and a short list is drawn up and interviews take place.

2./ Potential investors want there man incharge as a result 4 other candidates have been introduced into the frame.

What ever happens all we can do is voice our oppions as well as surpporting the team!

Gutted that the foreign guy who wanted it last time isn't in the running as the candidates are from this country!! He could have been our saviour :)

With results as they are and the happiness of the players the board would be foolish not go employ AT! If they want key players to stay on, letting someone so popular go isn't goin to help encourage them to stay!

He deserves it. Let's face it, not many fans believed he was capable of doin what he has done in such a short space of time! Myself included as I was one calling for a proven manager to come in rather than someone with no management experience! And he's still only 44 so not exactly old!!

Well fair play to SISU for keeping us informed - never thought I'd be saying that! Typical CT though, trying to big up what's in effect a routine story - where's the 'controversy' the editor talked about?:thinking about:

Can't see how the likes of M O'N or big Sam would really be interested without transfer funds, and I would have thought most decent managers would have higher profiles than AT purely because he's only recently become caretaker-manager and was chief scout!

Wouldn't mind M O'Niel though........but Thorn is the man, he has worked miracles in unbelivably bad circumstances and it is only right and proper he is given the opportunity.

That foreign guy was Laszlo Boloni, who took over from ex-City player Jean-Guy Wallemme at RC Lens in January, and is doing a great job of steering them from Ligue 1 to Ligue 2. Reckon we had a lucky escape there.

They think they're gonna make the fans happy by doing the right process but if they don't give AT the job and give it to some crap manager the hatred will only get worse

If AT wins toda they have to give him the job it be the best run weve had since we started our slippy slop an what has changed in the team nothing its AT who has changed things around andits working, if we get the win today sisu will haveto really consider giving it to him.

We should stop pratting around with 'big name' managers and give Thorn the chance to prove himself next season.

Thorns just been on the radio saying he's enjoying it and he's proud to hear the fans singing his name.

Just look at Brian McDermott at Reading, he was a nobody who was given the job full time, now they're challenging for automatic promotion and have got into the 1/4 final of the F.A. cup 2 years running. Andy Thorn has to get it.

It was made very clear that he was in charge until the end of the season and a decision would then be made.
