Sky Blues to reveal new Coventry City stadium plan next month

Director says club is in the final stages of securing land for a new home - but return to Ricoh is still 'preferred option'

The preferred site for a potential new Sky Blues stadium is likely to be officially revealed next month.

Speaking to the Telegraph today, Mark Labovitch - non-executive director of Coventry City - confirmed the club was in the final stages of securing land for a new home and details were likely to be revealed in February.

He said: “We are about three weeks away from being able to name the final site. We are down to two sites and hopefully, within a month, two will be down to one.

"I don’t like the position of no comment, but the commercial and political sensitivity around land negotiations is such that we can not talk about individual sites yet.”

Mr Labovitch confirmed a return to the Ricoh Arena would be the preferred option, but with negotiations seemingly reaching stalemate , the club would press ahead with plans for a new stadium.

He said: “Our preferred option is to bring the football club back to Coventry as soon as possible.

“Obviously buying a stadium which is already there is the quickest option and that is what we would have preferred to do.”

He added the club would only return to the Ricoh if negotiations over arena ownership were re-opened by the council and suggested the 40-year lease of stadium operators Arena Coventry Limited (ACL) was a major stumbling block.

But a statement from Coventry City Council leader Ann Lucas, on Tuesday, insisted the council and ACL would now look to move on with or without the Sky Blues - possibly opening the door for a new anchor tenant.

Mr Labovitch said: “The council needs to make clear exactly what it would sell, the freehold or the leasehold. You can’t have the leasehold without dismantling ACL, but there is no break clause in ACL’s contract.

"Let’s say you wanted to buy a shop and have a great idea about how to make that shop more money, but it has a sitting tenant on a 20-year lease, why would you buy it?”

An impending judicial review over a deal which effectively saw the council become ACL’s mortgage lenders by buying the company’s bank debt for £14m could be key to negotiations.

Asked about the impact of the council loan potentially being recalled, Labovitch said: “I think ACL would go bust.”

Responding to the suggestion ACL folding is what the club wanted, he added: “It’s none of our business, we want to run a football club.”

Adding: “It would help it they were not there.”

I heard it was being announced April 1st.

Wonder where it will be as we know a lot of places it won't be!

26 Jun 2013 - Tim Fisher says Coventry City are closing in on deal for new stadium site Sky Blues chief executive expects decision within three weeks

15 Jan 2014 - Mark Labovitch - non-executive director of Coventry City - “We are about three weeks away from being able to name the final site"

At this stage they will need to tell us a lot more than that. There needs to be some valid explanation as to why, when both Fisher and Labovich clearly stated they were in talks with 2 councils, every surrounding council and some further away have stated they are not in talks with them. If he's just coming out and saying there will be an announcement in a month we can file that with Fishers stating months ago that the announcement would be in the next 2 weeks.

Labovitch in Cov Tel had mentioned land deal will be announced to supporters next month.

Story coming...

Why should we believe them this time? In the Telegraph on 7th June, one of the forums was reported, in which Fisher stated:

“There are two sites. We had three sites we were interested in, but it’s gone down to two. One is very much an active bid.” He added: “We should have a deal signed in three weeks.”

So, eight months on, we're told that a deal can be announced 'next month'.

And they wonder why the sane have no confidence in their claims:

MMM reminds me of that joke where an Ex Con had been released from Prison after 8 years and he finds a ticket stub in his belongings for a Shoe Repair, he makes his way to the cobblers and the assistant asked him if she could be of any help. he replied yes i have come to pick up my pair of boots that you have. The assistant goes away and searches and comes back and says "they will be ready in tww days"

So in simple terms the club either need to do a deal with ACL (not the council) or find a new home. Meanwhile ACL either need to do a deal with the club or put a new tenant in.

I really think this means Nuneaton will play at the Ricoh soon as Sisu won't talk with ACL.

Mind you if ACL move on then maybe the council work on a new Stadium with Sisu.

agreed

Maybe the trust should ring the CET and tell them that all 10,000 "home" fans that SISU have lost will be returning to watch "home" games in 3 weeks

:D

Agreed. And that's my issue with Les Reid. Went apoplectic on Twitter yesterday, as Lucas stated they'd 'support' ACL; with him concluding and insinuating that this must equate to further financial input (when it could merely have been publicity, assistance in finding other tenants, etc.); whilst at the same time letting SISU get away with murder.

Twitter line: Coventry council leader: "We will provide support to ACL... to deliver its business plan."More taxpayer cash on way for Ricoh without #CCFC?
Les' mischievous question being underlined, of course.

Here's a simple one to pick up on, 'Our Les'; why are SISU pursuing Judicial Review at their cost, on an issue pertaining to a venue they've 'moved on' from?

Join the dots, Les, as you seem prepared to do with regards the council's intentions....

I don't see what they are trying to achieve. No one is believing them and its the boy who cried wolf. Even n 3 weeks and ML Is right, whop de fregin who you have told us your preferred site hahahahaa is this man for real? I could name the preferred site, Until bricks are being laid then its just BS as it always has been.

Is he even at the CT anymore, nothing from him since 18th December on their website.

On his Twitter feed, that's still being actively used - up until one minute ago, he titles himself thus:

'UK Columnist of Year,Regional Press Awards 2013. Midlands Journalist of Yr 2012&13 Reporter of Yr 12&13.Coventry Telegraph politics.Guardian contributor'

That stated, his last 'political blog' was dated April 12th (according to the link he's put up), and the one before that was January 30th. So, any slumber from December 18th until now is bit a blink of the eye compared to gaps between his political wisdom being forthcoming; so who knows?

I believe and it's a hunch that they are looking for land not for a stadium but a new academy facility. I think they are using this search as a 'potential' new stadium.

It's crystal clear that sisu want back at the Ricoh.

I long for the days when an actual announcement was worth reading.

"unable to comment"
"in three weeks"
"sources say"
"we believe"
"rumour has it"

Tedious.

Correct, see the latest Cov Tel story, now Lab is saying Ricoh is preferred option..

Yet on 18th May of last year, in the same journal: Coventry City say they will never play in Coventry again and are pressing ahead with plans to build a new stadium near the city. Chief executive Tim Fisher has said the club has played its last game at the Ricoh Arena following the bitter rent row with stadium operators Arena Coventry Ltd.

And people wonder why successive negotiations have broken down with this outfit? Negotiating with them must be akin to trying to put smoke in your pocket

“We have left the Ricoh Arena."

I see absolutely no point in trying to deal with these people. They've moved on, CCC have moved on, it's time WE moved on!

And when you tie this in with the Judicial Review - at SISU's cost - relating to a stadium they've 'moved on' from. What conclusion can be drawn?

In fact. Stop there. In light of Labrovich's statement today; what the hell was the move to Northampton about?!?

Then make a reasonable offer to buy it you mindless prick. Or is that just too complex a concept?

Im convinced more than ever CCFC will be back for 14/15 season, Northampton was a last minute move to fulfil fixtures and a year to get best rental deal possible. Never about buying the freehold ricoh. They know full well its never been for sale.

The truth is the squeeze is on financially at CCFC and assurances given to the league about financial backing cannot be unravelled by SISU this time so its a serious drain on its capital. They can get the financial backing for a stadium, put can they survive the 5 year wait while planning, appeals, public enquires and alike are resolved?

Kingokings204

I also believe SISU wanted a get out clause for free after each season to go back to ricoh. that's 100% fact. Why bother? 14/15 season folks. Sisu aren't money stupid to see they are losing 3m a year there and losing fans all the time.

The usual shit different day, clearly this war of attrition is taking longer than SISU had thought and CCC are playing them at their own game. I suppose the question is who will crack first!??
