Houch's old photos got me thinking.

Now amongst all those pics is one of the open top bus ride around the city centre after we won the league in 1967. On 29th April was obviously that really famous game between City and Wolves at the top of the table, when 51,000+ were at HR. City won 3-1 and went on to win the then 2nd division title.

Well, it's always something that has bugged me as to why I wan't there. It was around the time I first started going up. All I can remember from my early childhood is City in the First Division and losing every week and just beating releagtion by the skin of our teeth year upon year. Always annoyed me that I was too young for the glory years of the early sixties.

Anyway, was wondering why I didn't go to that Wolves game and indeed to the following open top bus parade, as I was a massive City fan by then and it is around the time I first started going up. So, just rang my mum and dad (now in their 80's) and asked why my dad didn't take me to that particular game. The answer came back that he did.

I reckon his mind isn't what it used to be. I would have been 6 and I remember the 1966 World Cup Final as clear as day. I would surely have remembered that City game wouldn't I?

Anyone else posting on here who was there that day? If so, please reassure me that I would surely never have forgotten that moment and my dad is wrong in his thinking.

If you were 6 in 1966 you must surely remember the cup final at least? You have those memories which you'll never forget. Unfortuantely I was 2 at the time so it meant nothing to me.

Anyone under 33/34 has never had anything to celebrate. If fact anyone in their late 20's early 30's like me have supported the club over 20 years and seen absolutely nothing back for it!

So you telling me there is no way I would forget that game if I was there?

Just can't see how I could possibly have been there. Why would I remember all the shitty defeats around that time but not the biggest game in our history besides the FA Cup?

I was there aged nearly 13. we used to catch the bus from Rugby and get off in Swan lane, then into the Kop past those God-awful mens toilets!!!

My mate and me started the game about half way, back but by half-time we had been moved to the front. All the blokes kept saying just come in front of us lads, you'll see better. Just how it was in those days

You were all just a bunch of glory hunters like those fans that turned up for the Crewe cup game and went to Arsenal last year. Well, according to some on here at least. lol

I was there on the touchline as us kids were allowed on the pitch because of the crush.I was behind the goal at the covered end,later the West End. I was twelve and we all kept running on the pitch.It was a great view and a day to remember.What with this trip down memory lane and Houch's pictures,I feel half happy at great memories,but half suicidal as they're not coming back !

No, you misunderstand. What I remember was after we were promoted. When we were in the 1st Division and struggling week in week out. That would be 1967/8 season.

I'm convinced my dad is wrong. Just looked at 1966/7 season and I don't remember a single one of those matches. Just checked 1967/8, the following season though and I remember quite a few of those.

Think I was going to reserve games in about 1964/5, but I don't remember any City first team match until that 1967/8 season onwards.

Funnily enough this has stirred memories for me too,as I recall my parents telling me I couldn't go because of the huge crowds etc. but as I played for the school on Saturday mornings I must have sneaked in with my team-mates.I bet that was the reason for you ?

Not sure. I know he wouldn't let me go to that famous game against Man U when we beat them 2-0 and they had Best, Charlton, Law etc. in their team and he said the crowd would be too big.

He took us to the Coventry Theatre instead to watch a pantomime. I recall someone on stage telling the audience that City were winning 2-0 and we all thought it was a joke and didn't believe him.

it was a wonder nobody got killed.

I was also at the match against the great Spurs side of 1949/50 that Spurs won 1-0 before going on to be Division 2 champions.
That match was also close to be a full house.

Sh 1946 and I was a mere 5 year old.I did have my dad and two elder brothers who also supported the Bantams.

I was 12 and went on the bus.
My bus was always at the bottom of the steps at the Spion Kop.

This is why the Sixfields thing gets to me so much. After going up for 47 years week in week out, not having my club around anyone is juist so deflating and distressing.

did you know that there IS a film of that game . as far as im aware its in the possession of ernie hunt, but its ownership has always been contested by ccfc, that's why its never been released. ccfc and a legal argument, who would have thought.

i was there otis and remember it well i left coventry in 1968 so didn't see as much of them as i wanted to couldn't get a ticket for final in 87 tho

Got a feeling it was 2 defenders who scored the goals, one being Maurice Setters. It was a fantastic result cos we were rock bottom and they were right at the top of the table with all those wonderful players. No-one expected that result.

While my following the City would have started around 64 at the age of 7,it was haphazard and dependent on freebie tickets through my Uncle who knew Curtis as dad was a right tightwad.
I was at the promotion game but don't have great retention of other matches .

My support didn't become regular Until I got my Apprenticeship and funds ,although I had money from around the age of twelve doing a Milk round and living in the sticks worked on a farm ,meaning by the time i'd got the Dollar it was too late get to the game .

It might have have been a panto Otis.

We lived out of Coventry and every March my "little sister" got taken to a panto in Cov for her birthday.

This enabled Dad to take to me to the match , so the pantos definitely ran for a good while in those days (this was early 70's).

Thanks Tommy. That's how I remember it.

Was quite surprised at the time that one of the characters talked directly to the audience and told us that City were beating Man Utd 2-0. The whole audience laughed, cos they obviously thought it must be a joke. Didn't seem at all feasible that the Sky Blues could topple the might of that Man U team that was Charlton, Stiles, Kidd, Law and Best.

Would have loved to have been at that game.

What about the 1963 Sunderland Cup game when we came came from 1-0 down to win 2-1 in the last eight minutes. The atmosphere was fantastic made even better as it was a night game. Night games to me always seemed to generate a good atmosphere not sure why.

I well remember being at "that" Wolves game, Otis. As your dad says, if you were there, you'd never forget it. I started off just behind the white wall at the Spion Kop end goalmouth, but eventually, I was lifted over the wall and allowed to sit on the grass just behind the touchline. Unbelievable atmosphere!
