Agree the best atmosphere since the cup final - the noise could have even been more as the only negative was that plenty of people i know sat and watched it at home because they could not get a ticket - around 5,000 empty seats doesn't make sense

Best atmosphere for me was at home to Leeds in approx 97/98, funnily enough it was a defeat (3-2)..... but my god the place was rocking. The previous few years had seen trouble in the ground, this year wasn't so bad, but a bit lively at half time i remember.

I remember a game the first year in the championship and at highfield road and we beat man city 4-3 last minute David thompson goal I think. What a game that was.

Many of the premiership games had far better atmosphere - the large away presence for big games made for a far better and intense experience.
Beating man utd 3-2
Draw with arsenal 2-2
Tottenham game we won 4-3
Thumping Aston villa on Boxing Day
All stand out in the memory .

Rose tinted glasses you hate the Ricoh so much wait a minute you're right seem to remember a reserve game at Highfield Road the atmosphere was that intense half the stand woke up.

best atmosphere ive ever been in at a home game would either when we beat Liverpool 1-0 a few weeks before the cup final, we had just got to Wembley and was mental all game, or the 1st game at home v Spurs after the cup win even the main stand was rocking that day!!

The atmosphere on Friday was fantastic, especially when the chorus of Stand Up if you Love City went round.
Other notables, Cov 3 Man Utd 2, Cov 3 Villa 0 (boxing day) and the League Cup Semi Cov 3 West Ham 2, for the fantastic comeback and last minute winner by Garry Thompson.
Also coming back to me was a 5-0 :League Cup Quarter Final win over Sunderland....now that was sweet!

The Atmosphere at HR before the set stand was poor, it used to sound loud in the west end but most of the noise was captured by the roof. It only got good when the entire ground joined in which was't that often.
Friday I would say was the best since the FA cup times, there were some after, Beating ManU , the last games against Derby. But for me Friday was the best 'home' atmosphere I've seen. Didn't go in '67 wasn't allowed. But that on Friday was like Hillsborough in '87 or Old Trafford when we beat them 2-0 in the LC, it felt like every fan for 90 mins.

I was taking the piss. All the games you've mentioned all hah a level of intensity but not from start to finish,on friday I saw people who I've known for years who never chant shout etc giving it large. I saw grown men cry when the players came out and I was one,I saw people who hadn't seen each other since 2013 hugging and kissing,I saw a guy taking his two small chidren home at half time took them there for the first time so they would grow up as City fans. Friday was an outpouring of emotion from City fans it wasn't a reaction from a comeback performance or a performance that guaranteed promotion or a trophy win,it was one thing fans love of their football team and so in terms of this yes this was the best,this was City fans at their best and it showed the world City fans at their best.
As far as I'm concerned you can keep those other games,every one I went to. I thought my football club was lost,I thought my love for my football club was going and I was just going through the motions but when I saw them come out it was still there but even stronger. So yes that was the best for so many reasons that you probably wouldn't understand. Rant over

Yes remember that now, great come back and as I said about the whole ground joining in, that was one of the fews games they did, but not for the full 90, again at the time that was the biggest game we had since promotion in 67, I game off Wembley for the 1st time all be it over to legs.
And if your asking if my biased because of my tag - no I'm not. I have very found memories of HR, I also have of my grandparents house, the smell of baking, a hint of moth balls off grand dads suit on a sunday, Chocolates on the christmas tree, the outside loo, tin bath etc. But wouldn't choose to live there now. As a stadium the Ricoh is head and shoulders above HR and 95% off all the traditional old grounds, it just needs some success there.

The Arsenal game, think it was Boxing Day, 2000 maybe? 3-2 to us. Best atmosphere I can remember and also, strangely, on the telly. I will say the other night was best at the Ricoh, by far.

I think that there's quite a bit of overlap in many of the posts in this thread with great games or really important ones.
The League Cup semi-final against West Ham was a fantastic atmosphere, but it was our first ever semi-final, had a large away attendance and was a cracking match.
On Friday we played a relatively meaningless third division game against Gillingham, who brought a handful of supporters. We won 1-0 and played OK, but other than Fleck's shot there wasn't too much about the match itself that will live long in the memory.
And yet the atmosphere was very special - spine tingling at times, hair standing up on the back of necks etc etc. as someone said, it was an occasion as much as a football match
