League One side say they will work with Wasps rather than oppose move, which could now be rubber-stamped as early as next week

Coventry Rugby Football Club are prepared to work with Wasps for the mutual benefit of both clubs if the Aviva Premiership side’s bid to make the Ricoh Arena their permanent home is given the green light by the city’s council on Tuesday night, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

The decision by the League One side, who were once one of the leading powers in the English game in the 1970s and 1980s, to work with Wasps rather than oppose the move is likely to remove the last obstacle to it becoming a reality in time for the start of next season.

The £30 million move by Wasps to take a majority shareholding in the stadium to make it their permanent home is expected to be endorsed by the city council, who are co-owners of the company that owns the venue, the Arena Coventry Limited (ACL) along with the Alan Higgs Trust charity.

Wasps are desperate to secure their long-term future by moving away from Adams Park, where the former Sudbury club have been based since 2002, into stadium they own rather than rent.

If the buy-out is ratified, the move is also expected to be swiftly rubber-stamped by rugby’s Professional Game Board, possibly as early as next week. Opposition is only expected if Wasps look to move their academy from their Acton base in London as it could encroach on the catchment areas of the academies of Premiership rivals Worcester, Northampton and Leicester.

The current heads of agreement governing academies between the Premiership clubs and the Rugby Football Union is due to expire in 2016.

Peter Rossborough, the former England full-back who is president of Coventry RFC, said the club had been left “incredibly frustrated” at the lack of consultation about the proposed takeover with the city council but that they were prepared to make it work with Wasps.

“We have tried very hard to get to see the city council and talk to people about this and they said they had asked Wasps to speak to us so we are very frustrated,” Rossborough said.

“I have got no complaint about Wasps however. They have spoken to us and have been businesslike but also gentlemen so we have got no problem with them.

“We are still trying to find out what the position is and I know Coventry City Football Club share are concerns and we are concerned for them as well as after two years away we want them back in the Ricoh for good so we hope they will be accommodated if anything happens.

“We are disappointed about this but we are not stupid as a club and we are quite aware that if Wasps come here then we will work very closely and very collaboratively with them. The meetings we have had with them show that we can get on with them as individuals and people and I am sure we can get on working together as well.”

That partnership could see Wasps’ academies players play for Coventry’s first XV while Rossborough also benefits for his club in terms of having access to the Premiership side’s coaching expertise and sports science as well collaborate on their respective community operations.

Wasps must win over sections of their own supporters as well, however, as more than 1,700 supporters had last night signed an online petition against moving the club further away from its London base.

So if our protests are not going to be based on the believe it will hurt our rugby club.
They shouldn't be based on us not getting the Ricoh as our owners say they don't want it.
It seems we are protesting in behalf of Wasps Rugby Club.

Will their fans be protesting as well?

The first line of the content says they won't oppose it. Which would allow the RFU to rubber stamp it.

I think the content matches the title perfectly

The content says they're not happy about it in the slightest, but if Wasps do turn up they'll work with them.

What would you expect if it was a fete accompli? (sp) What choice would they have in that instance?

Well The Telegraph are suggesting they could oppose it for starters, but they are not going to

The Telegraph are suggesting that they're incredibly frustrated, tried to talk to the council but been unable to (incidentally, the line the football club have used often and it's been disbelieved) and they're diusappointed about it.

It's a classic case of skewing the content for a headline. There is another story in the same words about lack of council consultation...

The suggestion is by not opposing it allows the RFU to rubber stamp it.
Why would not attempt to oppose it. Unless you actually thought it would work out better for you?

Because the council have refused to talk to you and it's a massive stitch-up, so you have to go with what you have and make the best of it?

Unless they're getting a back hander/compensation payment?

Surprised you're taking the words of a sports club owner as your 100% guide to best practice, as well...

I think he sees Cov getting the wasps development players as a way to drive Cov upwards at less cost.
I would guess.

Tonight Peter Rossborough said, if Wasps deal happens then CRFC have to cooperate as not to do so could spell the end for them.

Pragmatic, but certainly not enthusiastic.

Yep, what else is he going to do.

If it does happen he'd be crazy to oppose after the event.

They are not happy they have no choice but to grin and bear it.

Stop wumming even council jack is bored of your games now.

Though obviously not approving the move and having big concerns, I have to say I am rather unhappy that CRFC haven't come out and been more vehemently in total opposition.

Would at least put a bit more pressure on councillors. As it stands it comes across already as reluctant acceptance and the vote hasn't even been had yet.

Disappointing.

It says a lot when Wasps are considered to be encroaching on the development areas of Leicester, Northampton and Worcester...not Coventry Rugby Club.

I'll be sticking by the Blue and Whites.

What should happen here is that CRFC and CCFC come out in opposition to the deal, declaring how much it is going to hurt the clubs.

What we have had, is an almost defeatist, shrugged shoulders from our rugby club and a statement from out football club saying they won't interfere.

Think that pretty much seals the decision that will be taken today when councillors vote.

If we were all unision in opposition, 2 sets of fans, 2 clubs, then more pressure on our local council could be applied surely!

I don't hear a great deal from wasps fans.
A 'we will not oppose it from the owners of CRC.'

I have to say, if there are really not happy they should be saying they at least oppose it.
They just seemed miffed they are not properly in the loop, as oppose to outraged it is happening.

Look at Leyton orients response to the West Ham move.

Who are you to speak for Wasps fans?

There is a lot of outrage here:

There will be a shitstorm coming at the city council from the national media if this goes through.

“I have got no complaint about Wasps however. They have spoken to us and have been businesslike but also gentlemen so we have got no problem with them."

It seems they're not very business minded at all, why don't they try to batter their opponents in court and pick up ACL for tuppence ha'penny...?

Because they are bending over backwards and virtually giving the keys forever to the place for next to nothing?

They are not considered to be encroaching on those development areas as they are not moving their academy. I'm glad you're sticking by Cov though.

Would be better if they had more than 1700 signatures. They must feel disappointed with that.

Would have thought all rugby fans around the country would sign it and obviously lots of City fans too.

Just signed.

Of all the reactions, I can't quite believe that Cov Rugby are happy to take this lying down. Do the management at the BPA think that loyal Cov fans will be happy in time to watch Wasps reserves masquerading as Coventry ?

I don't think they are happy. It's just that CCC have decided it's what is happening and they have very little choice.

Well CCC will be the ultimate architects of the complete demise of the football and Rugby club and in 2 years the Speedway club will be homeless. At the rate that they are advocating building on the greenbelt as well we will soon become just another suburb of the Greater Birmingham project.
Richardson, Strachan, Seppalla and Ranson will have all played their negligent part in this but when push comes to shove, the local council leaders elected by the populace should be fighting for the best interests of important institutions like it's long standing sporting clubs !
