Should have gone earlier at the start of 2001 - may have stayed up
He was awful the first few games in the championship, drawing 0-0 with Forest andthey only had 9 men
Roland was a good replacement ruined when Jim Smith was appointed.

No he should have gone earlier and then we might have had a chance of staying up. We made the same mistake with Thorn and look like we could be doing it yet again with SP.

He hasn't done too bad for himself once he left us.
It was just the taking Noel Whelan into house and touches like that, that make me think he probably had something special about him.

I agree he did have something special but Craig Bellamy signing, Lee Hughes KON JJ the following season were very poor - he was awful at M'Boro also.

I think he needed help in his final season when we went down, and didnt have the right coaching staff with him. Pendry certainly wasnt what he needed alongside him.

I also think Richardson let the Hartson deal drag on too long and should have tied it up immediately. That delay and the lack of a partner for Bellamy may well have led to the collapse we saw that season, and if that idiot of a chairman had actually invested money on Hartson when we actually needed money spending, rather than wasting a fortune on dross, we may well not have gone down, or at least would have made more of a fight of it.

On a personal level I have met Strachan on several occasions, and have always found him a decent and nice bloke, and I think what happened with the relegation stills sits heavily with him.

I've never understood the Strachan hatred to be honest. Yes we got relegated under him (mainly because his two highest goalscorers from the previous season left the club) but he produced two wonderful attacking teams in his short 4 year reign.

Yes we struggled at the start of the next season but can you judge over just 4 games at the start of any season? Most teams coming down from the Premiership struggle initially in the Championship. He's very rarely failed during his management career and has proved himself every where he has gone

Quite correct. Strachan lost the plot during the relegation season and his team selections became more and more bizarre as the season went on. I always felt that the squad was plenty good enough to be mid-table but the players seemed to have lost all faith in the management. Who could forget the utter embarrassment of the home defeat to Everton who fielded about 6 reserves! Had Strachan been sacked around this time of the season I'm confident we would have stayed up. We may then have ridden out the debt problems, given the money that was sloshing around the Premier League soon afterwards, and still been there today.

It soon became apparent that a quick return was going to be beyond us and we have been outside looking in ever since. Relegation was a watershed at that time, and to me it always rested on that fateful decision to keep Strachan even after he went bonkers. The problem with Nilsson was that he lost Richard Money, although Smith was never the right man. In truth Money should have replaced Strachan, but the board never seemed to like him.

I always thought WGS wasn't the prime mover behind the Lee Hughes signing.

Yes the wittering little idiot in combination with Richardson sacrificed the long term future of the club to ensure a couple of seasons where we broke the bank to play some champagne football before it all went tits up when ultimately he refused to drop his 'golfing buddies' and signed a striker coming off the back of a cruciate knee ligament injury who plainly hated being at the club.

Selling Aloisi for 600k and replacing him with Hughes for 5 million is up there in the pantheon of CCFC bad decisions. And there's been a few.

I hated him years ago especially when he said in his observer column that he only hung on at City out of "sheer bloody mindedness."

I've mellowed a bit as I've got older. Actually think he speaks sense about football a lot of the time, maybe he's learned from mistakes that cost us.

Liked his post match comments after had England put Scotland in their place Tuesday night.

I like him a lot more now he's not here. ;)

A thoroughly decent, likeable man, and great player. I think he's turned into a respectable manager, and I wish him nothing but well personally, even with Scotland! But I don't think he did a good job for us in truth.

I think it was frustration and despair with Strachan rather than hatred.

His reign was a long time ago now and memories fade, but I do remember the sheer stubborness - to the detriment of the team - that he was capable of in that last year, e.g. not giving Aloisi a shot, not playing our best defender Breen, playing Telfer at RB and Barry Quinn at LB. Every teamsheet seemed to be blotted with his ego and grudges.

I don't think he was judged after those four games anymore than Andy Thorn was judged after three games - it was about what had gone before. The fans had lost faith, the dressing room seemed lost...it all felt stale and done.

As others have stated he should have gone during the 00/01 season and we may have had a chance of staying up.

We lost 1-3 at home to Everton and you could tell then it was a lost cause, the players had given up. We were absolutely crying out for a change.

GS was apart of many reasons for why we got relegated..

If anything he should have gone earlier..

I remember another example of his stubborness. Home to Middlesborough, it's 0-0 and Magnus Hedman gets a knock and can hardly walk. Everyone can see it except GS. But he wouldnt bring on the sub keeper (can't remember who it was that day). Then Dean Gordon has a speculative shot from outside the box and Magnus can only watch it go past him. Would have been a routine save for a fit keeper. And that was another defeat.

Strachan spent a fortune while he was here. Players like Delorge cost over £1m.

His ' entertainers' team was good at home but atrocious away.

Fairly sure a young Chris Kirkland was on the bench that day. We lost 2-1. Hedman couldn't even take kicks

Agree with most on here he was given too long but I also believe he could have saved himself by sacking that cone putter out Pendry a total waste of space as a coach, how much say he had on signings I wouldn't like to say as there seemed to be some iffy things going on then around signings Robbie Keane for example.

Didn't start going to games regularly until 2001/2 but I remember going to that home game against Everton and I still remember my dad dragging us all out of HR at 0-3. The first few games in the FL were odd. Very negative atmosphere at games and Strachan was the piggy in the middle-in truth he should've been sacked after relegation. Can't say much for the 00/01 season as I saw just a handful of games but it was clear at that time that things were rotten at the club and the manager wasn't even half of it.

Disagree that we were never in the hunt for an immediate return though, we were in the top 6 as late as March I think then a hideous run of form set in.

I thought Robinson (having become the chairman) summed it up best on CWR when interviewed and said that we sacked the wrong guy. We got rid of the manager when we should have lost the chairman. I heard a rumour that Richardson allegedly might have been doing deals for players that the rest of the board (and possibly the manager) had no idea about. Didn't WGS when asked about the Hondurans we were signing have no idea as this was the first he'd heard of them? I'm not defending him as I do remember some decisions he took as manager that were appalling. Who would people have picked as manager if he'd gone earlier? Our other lovely Swedish club member Roland N or someone else?

strachan was part of the problem. He was a good honest man and would have always tried he just lost the plot and became dilussional which happens when you start losing many games at a club you have been at for 4 years+.

Sacking him earlier may have saved us but may not of as the damage had been done. It's ibvious to a blind man if you sell your top 2 players in the summer and take 40 goals out of the team then guess what happens?

At least we learned from that and don't sell our top strikers now and get relegated?

But if people are to be believed all managers want to sell their best players and replace them with inferior ones.:thinking about::)

Which people??

Well all the the ones posting on here seem to think that SP was happy to sell our best players and get the money to replace them with shit.

So did he have a say in it?

Personally I think not.

From memory we took 1 point from our last 7 games. And missed the play-offs by 6 points.
