Steven Pressley fears he could be gazumped in bid to sign on-loan Sheffield Wednesday striker on permanent deal
Steven Pressley fears he could be gazumped in his bid to sign Gary Madine on a permanent Coventry City deal.

The Sky Blues boss is determined to land the Sheffield Wednesday striker but expects stiff competition from clubs who are better placed to pay a fee for his services,

Madine is out of contract at Hillsborough in the summer and City had hoped to buy a bit of time by extending the 24-year-old’s loan spell for another month in the hope that the Owls would let him out for nothing.

But Pressley admitted: “I don’t think we’ll be able to do that. I think Sheffield will be in a situation where there are a lot of suitors for Gary. That’s the reality of the situation so I don’t think they’ll feel the necessity to put him out on loan again and it’s a case of whether we can secure him permanently or not.

“They may well want a fee and if they do then it’s going to be very difficult to bring him here. And the reality is there will be a queue the length of my arm that will take a fit Gary Madine who has been playing regular first-team football. But we’re going to try.”

He added: “Unfortunately there aren’t that many strikers available in January. Those that are have been sitting twiddling their thumbs for the last three months but here’s an in-form striker who’s played 90 minutes of football every week, ready to go, and you have a lot of clubs desperate for somebody like that.”

If City fail to land Madine, one man who could fill his boots is Frank Nouble who, it’s understood, is available for free in the transfer window.

Pressley has had his doubts about the Ipswich front man in recent weeks but his performance against Chesterfield has given the manager encouragement and the fans’ favourite has one last chance to impress him at Walsall on Saturday in his final game of his loan spell.

“Frank can potentially play up as a lone striker or off the sides,” said Pressley, who revealed that taking the striker on a short-term deal until the end of the season is one possibility.

“He’s a player who gives us a number of options and I thought he played particularly well at the weekend. He’s a threat and he worked to the system on Sunday and showed us all he’s more than capable of doing that.”

Asked about any misgivings about the player, he said: “The only way Frank can answer my doubts is by not telling me he’ll do it, but actually doing it, and I’ve said this to him.

“His best performances this season, and it’s no coincidence, have all been the times when he’s worked for the team within those performances and he’s reaped the benefits.

“That was the case at the weekend when we saw flashes of brilliance from him but he also nworked hard for the team and that’s vitally important because that’s been my real ethos at this football club – that we’re all in this together. He did that on Sunday and I was really pleased with him.

“I’ve not ruled anything out with Frank at this moment in time, and I genuinely mean that – I have still not made a decision.

“He’s a player who can certainly play as the main striker and he can play off the side in the system we played at the weekend. Hopefully he can reproduce the same type of performance against Walsall and make my job much easier in terms of making a decision on him.”

So he is saying it is unlikely to happen if there is a fee. Also if that is the case there will be a queue round the block for him. I assume he means of people who are prepared to pay a fee. I wonder if that is one of the majority of league one clubs who have paid a fee for a player this season. Or if it is a championship club?

Yes FN played better on Saturday, but he was not playing as a lone striker, he prefers to get the ball deeper, turn and run with it, not receive it with his back to goal so how is this a like for like?

I don't hold out much hope of getting the players we need in this window without any funds to pay fees, it looks like cheap loans again. Now did I remember SP saying he didn't want lone players recentlly???

You know what will be next, madine won't sign for us but nouble will. Even though I can guarantee Presley would take nouble if madine signed, he will come out with " frank is a top player and one of the best finishers I have ever seen, we tried to get Garry but we could compete with the money asked for"

This club has no ambition and that's why we won't go anywhere while sisu are involved

I doubt Nouble will sign for us - I am sure I read somewhere that he's on £18,000 a week - 3.5 times more than Madine is believed to be on.

When you say majority have paid a fee please quantify that syatement

Where has the money gone that SW said would be available in January. He also said that this year's budget was for staying at shitfields so where is the extra money gone.We have the fifth biggest average attendance in the league so in theory should have the fifth biggest budget.if we can't even buy a player like madine for a couple of hundred thousand then we really are fucked and yes Sisu have no ambition to take the club any further.

I don't think Nouble will have many offers and probably knows that. Most likely to be till end of season but knowing our luck he will bang them in

Only two transfer fees in league one in the summer were for six figure fees so I guess all but two clubs have similar ambitions.

Most clubs didnt get sizeable fees for players they sold in the summer and didnt collect a bit of cash from playing Arsenal at the Emirates. Most also have smaller crowds than us. But lets not let the facts get in the way of you defence of our owners.

Were they 2 of the clubs pushing for promotion by any chance ?

Surely Sisu know that promotion takes investment !! ...... unless ?

The biggest recorded fee in the summer was £700,000 for Crawley.

I have sent you a link the other day when you incorrectly stated that nearly all the clubs in this division only sign loans and free transfers.

13 separate clubs have paid a transfer fee in this division. The amount maybe small but it was not free.

Ah so it includes £5,000 for Jack Muldoon then. I guess that's the sort of ambition we need - strikers from Worksop town as they command a fee.

How many of those fees would come close to getting Madine do you think?

Where has the money gone from Wilson and Christie sale's. O I no council for unpaid rent and legal fees thanks again Sisu. You have to invest money to have a chance of a decent return.

Notts county are in the hunt for play offs and haven't spent a penny.

And Rochdale - oh hang on - they spent £5,000 on jack muldoon

I would not joke about that sort if thing

It's like the days when you would joke about the idea of the likes of Huddersfield nicking our players

Div 2 here we come, SP / SW record on transfers especially strikers is nothing short of shocking. Any striker on form playing regularly such as Madine will command a fee, unheard of strikers - Slager are free, out of form strikers who haven't scored for years such as tudguy are free, inexperienced youth team strikers like Chuba can be loaned for free also.

Relying on Nouble is the biggest gamble since SISU took the club to Northants and we know how that ended up.

The support for SISU's transfer policy and to blame it all on the manager on this board is so strange. The top 6 in this league transfers in

Sheff Utd - 3 players with undisclosed fees including Higdon who we were chasing but surprisingly never got
Brizzol - 3 undisclosed
Swindon - 1 undisclosed
MK - 2 undisclosed
Preston - 1 undisclosed

Surprisingly less transfer fees than expected but free transfers of good players who have run down their contract and are in demand will have higher salaries - not sure pugh swanson tudguy miller were much in demand. JOB & Reeda were most likely in demand.

The fans know that Sisu are taking the piss and are leaving in droves.
Hardened, long term fans like myself are wavering under 'how low can we go and still get away with it" policy.

Anybody else think that a small stadium ticking along in D2 will be enough for Sisu to offload their toxic debt into?
Good look to those that will continue to go to support the lads.
To be honest I would struggle to recognise any of our players if I bumped into them and I am unclear, or not bothered, who is on loan and who actually belongs to us.

By your logic do we have a competitive advantage over other teams in this league because we generated money from player sales so should have some money to pay a fee for the right player and they dont? Why do you think we arent taking advantage of this?

So effectively Notts County is the rare exception.

Glad this fallacy that everyone in our division only signs loanees and free transfers is blown out of the window.

This is a good point especially as we are cash flow positive

To be fair, I think someone posted it on here a few weeks back, but we think it may have come from football manager.

However, he will still be on very good money, having gone from chelsea, West Ham, wolves to ipswich.

Jack Grealish at Villia (19 yrs old) is on £10k pw, and he's only just starting to break into the first team.

I'm still gutted we didn't get Michael Higdon for a fee, banging them in at Sheffield Utd...

Yes we have exactly the same ambition as all the other shitty teams in this league.

Something to be proud of I suppose.

I would suggest that being 17th in league 1 after 23 games leads to the inevitable conclusion that none of our strikers are exactly pulling up trees.

Do any justify their reputation or their wages?
