The Scot is planning to overhaul his squad when the window opens next month.
He is after "four or five" new players while aiming to cut down the seven loanees currently at the Ricoh Arena.

I’ve never been a huge fan of the loan system but we’ve had to utilise it. But it’s better to have a far more settled squad and that will be important come January.

What do we do sign 4 loan players!!

SP has never been a fan either...........apparently.

what is concerning is that loan players are going to miss out on the match day squad in favour of..........loan players.

Bit like when McQuoid got ditched because the 5 loan player rule.

So we have Pennington, jones, odelusi, samuel, and this one, and pressley looking to bring in number 10 as well as a defender in the emergency loan window? Or is the boro one the no 10?

Knock, knock, knock. Moan, moan, moan!

If there's one club that's spent any money in this Division that's about it, what you don't seem to get is that it's over spending and stretching our finances that's got us here into this position & situation.

By the way Swindon have 5 loans, look where they are in the table! (Currently 3rd).

In the Championship Mick McCarthy at Ipswich had spent only £10,000 in the transfer market up until the start of this window! (Currently 4th).

Also think SP said he only wanted 5 loans on the books as that's the maximum that can be involved in a match day squad, so is that our 5th loan signing?

Hang on, I thought you were saying we needed stability ?

I don't think we will go over 5, when you have over 5 its pretty much a dead wage as we're paying a player to play in the U21s. We now have Samuel, Odelusi, Jones, Pennington, Williams. I'd be surprised if we brought another loan in unless it means Pennington definitely won't be returning after 7th February.

It's not necessarily the overspending as to where we are, not in the current climate. Pressley averages a signing a fortnight yet the majority don't seem to fit the bill so are quickly discarded and replaced with the next big thing or realistically a quick fix. Swindon have an equivalent number of loans but they are probably managed in the correct manner and embedded into a confident, winning environment. SP is running out of time and his past record is signing players is beyond poor. On Saturday he managed to get the 2 new boys off to a perfect start but it doesn't hide the top that we are top heavy in the striker department and lacking in midfield. I would love him to prove me wrong but I genuinely can't see it!

Swindon have 5 loan players.

People keep banging on about this (Clive Eakin repeatedly) but the 2 scenario's are totally different.

For a start, 3 of their 5 loans come from clubs currently in the Champions League places, so you would expect them to be of a certain quality. To my knowledge none of their loans are 30 days, they are all either season long or half season loans, so the squad stays more settled. We have players coming and going that much you can't keep pace with it.

The other thing is that Swindon have brought these players in to enhance a squad that just missed out on the play offs last season, so their squad is built on a more solid platform. We have signed our loan players short term to try and help a squad dying on it's arse, hoping to god that those coming in can help us keep our heads above water.

It's tricky, we need to build so at some point we genuinly mount a promotion push. Equally at the moment we need to concern ourselves about the short term and making sure we don't go down.

Think the problem is less the loans and more that the permanent players are on short term contracts. If we had a bit of consistency in the squad then we could just use loans to top up, cover injuries etc but it's not really working like that at the moment. Wonder if the length of the permanent contracts are a lack of commitment from SISU or a lack of confidence in Pressley and Waggot and their track record with signings.

and 2 of their loans were brought in as cover due to 2 of their internationals being away at the Africa cup, 1 of these internationals they paid 400k for.

Exactly this. Obviously loans aren't ideal, but try dealing in facts.

Div.

6 month contracts or less contracts are better than loan deals since they can't be recalled but thats about the only advantage really. you get almost none of the benefits of 2 year+ contracts.

Don't give a fuck. He's not on loan and I get an internet point for pointing out that somebody is wrong.

let's also be clear that Swindon's loan signings will be on wages well out of our price range.
I don't mind loans at this stage of the season. with the high turnover of poor quality permanent signings over the last few seasons i don't think we're missing out on much. have there been many decent permanent deals by other league one clubs this window?

Out of all the incoming L1 deals today only two - including ours have been permanent.

I'm just disappointed we haven't singed any loan players from the big four, you know the guaranteed quality youngsters like Akpon, Henderson, Sawyer and Reece Brown...

Henderson wasn't from a big 4 club and was good-is that the point that you're making? :thinking about:

Oh, that one, yeah he was terrible...I remember getting stick for slagging him off as he just didn't look like he'd ever make it as a player to me!

Obviously it's not always the best players that you get from the big clubs. But the best players on loans often do come from top 10 Prem clubs. I'd class Pennington as a good example of that with us this year (if only he was always played in his best position!). Remember that year that Brum went up basically through having Bendtner and Larrson on loan from Arsenal? Bamford's from Chelsea and has been a big hit on loan everywhere he goes. PVA was one of our best loans in recent years...Warnock our best loan ever? All from pretty big clubs. Obviously we're at the arse end of L1 now and can't attract such talent anymore.

I think you may be surprised just how much our loans are costing us
Both executives of the club have often iterated and reiterated this point

Of course they have, they've got a near £5m transfer surplus to claim that they're investing in loan fees...

Stu...who is the famous footballer called Henderson who we had on loan, hmmm?!? Is it the bloke who I had forgotten existed, or the next Liverpool captain?

Didn't come from the big four or even the top 10 in the premier league, Sunderland avoided relegation by 2 points that season, there have also been plenty of shockers (sorry copied and pasted from a previous post)

Reece Brown - Man U PL
Brian Kerr - newcastle PL
Lee Sawyer - chelsea PL
Callum ball - Derby champ
Eddie Johnson - Man U PL
Akpom - arsenal PL
Henderson (not jordan the other one) - arsenal PL
Peter clarke - everton PL
Sebastian Olszar - Portsmouth PL
Courtney Pitt - Portsmouth PL
Richard Duffy - Portsmouth PL
Lloyd Dyer - WBA PL
Neil wood - Man U - PL
Christian Negouai - Man city PL
Rohan Rickets - Tottenham PL
Matt Mills - Southampton PL (was poor for us but has had a good career)
Adam Virgo - Celtic SPL
Zavon Hines - West Ham PL
Freddie Sears - West Ham PL
Danny Ward - Bolton PL
Alex Nimely - Man City PL
Gary Gardner - Aston Villa PL
Stephan O'Halloran - Aston villa PL
Jamie Reckord - Wolves Championship
James Bailey - Derby Championship
Aaron Martin - Southampton PL
Delfouneso - Aston Villa PL

Pennington has done average overall, played well centre back against Walsall but also had some v average games at right back.

I just don't think that coming through a top 10 academy guarantees quality, any loan player is a gamble.
