A couple of weeks ago I posted a thread titled 'Coventry for promotion 15/16' and everyone went mad at me but now, this week in the papers, Mowbray himself and Dein Keily have said that CCFC could push for promotion

We've always had "The potential for promotion" it's just needed a lot of things the club were doing badly behind the scenes to be sorted out and getting a gaffer in that knows Football and knows how a club should be run.

IF Mowbray signs I honesly believe it will be a turning point for the club as a whole, not just because of the manager but because I believe the foundations will have to be right for Mowbray to say yes. Get the basics right and were half way there

Whats to hate. We always have the potential to get promoted but some how it all ends up closer to relegation no matter who the manager is. TM is only going to be as good as the tools he is given or allowed to acquire.

So we get promoted next season. It would be great to have some success for once. Then what? We wont have the resources to compete because we wont have the income, and the owners have said the club has to pay its own way from now on. How do we pay for a players wage bill that could easily be four times what it is now? Yes we will have better gates, better sponsorship and advertising income, more merchandise sold but to break even we would be looking needing a turnover over 15m currently its around 6m. At that time of course we will be in the option period on the Wasps deal with next to no chance of our own ground any time soon. To stay in Championship it looks like more losses and more debt to do so are our owners up for that?.

There is a lot of faith being put in TM, I hope he signs up, but the one thing TM has made very clear is that the owners support financial or otherwise has to be there. Is it? Can they afford success?

Wasn't it more that you started the thread minutes after the season ended?

Let's get TM signed up and see who he signs first. Only 3 go up, and at the minute I can't see us challenging for automatic promotion and play offs are a lottery.

In short I think the message last time is at least wait until pre-season before we start making predictions.

Haven't you just answered your own question OSB? Whose to say a promotion wouldn't see a £9m increase in turnover from the income streams you mentioned? Granted, it is a hike, but not beyond the realms of fantasy (like a new stadium for example).

not really because the est of £15m turnover would be to scrape in at the bottom of the table and that level of performance will affect the gates. But I agree anything is possible even a new stadium.

In the past match day incomes have run at £9 per head per game. that equates with an average gate of 30,000 to 6.2m. I cannot see such an average crowd level as that more likely 15000 or £3.1m. Current commercial income is around 3m that is worth apparently the drop to L1 cost the club 5m. Still leaves us short. There could be player sales yes but wouldn't we like our best players kept and if they go they will need to be replaced with similar quality or potential at Championship level

Don't get me wrong have been desperate to see CCFC have a successful season, I hope TM brings it ....... but getting promoted brings financial danger as well as excitement on the pitch. That's all

Don't disagree with your parting shot there OSB. I guess if TM is the messiah that some are making out and is looking for more control on how the finances available are distributed, I'd hope that he'd be pushing the owners from a commercial stand point if he were to achieve promotion with the team, in order to address, as you rightly point out, the inevitable difference in income.

One thing to remember though, previous incomes have been during periods of decline. A CCFC business on the way up might look slightly more attractive if we're moving in the right direction as opposed to the car crash of a club we've had in the past few years. Not exactly commercially attractive in the past few years (look at the issues with shirt sponsorship as an example).

I would love to see us keep our best players but unfortunately we are not in the position to keep them at at all costs, just supposing TM or whoever the manager may be unearths a 25 goal striker and Maddison starts living up to his early promise do you think we have a cat in hells chance of keeping them here?

I think we have only one shot with Maddison. If he does well early season, he will be sold in Jan, but we must make sure he is immediately loaned back for the rest of the season. Most higher clubs would I'm sure let this happen to aid his development. This season coming has to be the best chance we will get for some years I fear...........

And also we might have a player or 2 to sell to balance the books

who ?

Do we have anyone who would command a fee apart from Maddison ?

Maybe Philips or Willis, but not much and they should become more valuable than they are now.

I think Willis is out of contract.

edit: We have an option of a further year along with Reda.

If we go up they might stay. If CW scored the goals he did and Bournemouth didn't go up, he might have been swayed by other Prem teams. As it happens they got promoted and he'll more than likely be there for at least next season.

Bit harsh calling them tools before he's brought in a single player.

I was responding to an earlier post saying if we got promoted... if we have been promoted maybe we will have some valuable players on our books

You'd think there were season tickets to sell or something. This division is pretty poor. We were terrible for large chunks of last season yet if we'd beaten Orient, Crawley, Notts County, Crewe and Port Vale at home, all teams that were so bad they finished below us, we'd be in the play offs. It maybe doesn't need as big a turnaround as it might seem.

Our turnover last time on the championship was just under £11m which was pretty much consistent the last 3-4 years in the championship, which was in the lowest 4 in the league.

Like I said, the period you talk about, we were in decline (or at least stable for some of those seasons). Promotion might look a little more positive for turnover purposes.

I doubt it would be enough to get a turnover of £15m. With 15k we had £10.8m turnover. I doubt very much we will average any more than 17-18k in the championship unless we're challenging at the top, especially as ST prices will go up significantly, that would bring in about £750k-1m. With little access to revenues at the Ricoh, we consistently have one of the lowest turnovers in the league. That's why we're far more likely to become a Peterborough/Doncaster than to do a Southampton.

Sorry to be doom and gloom but I think OSB work agree.

I can't believe that you are suggesting that promotion is a bad thing! What you are saying is like saying of someone who has won the lottery, "oh, you won't be able to afford that millionaire's lifestyle...". Well, you don't have to live like one, do you?!? We don't have to over-spend, we can try and compete through good management, as countless sides have in the past-and basically EVERYONE had to in the good old days!

Not saying its a bad thing. Never played or coached to do anything other than the best I or the team can be - not in my nature to be otherwise. I would love CCFC to experience success and hopefully promotion, that would be quite some journey. Just pointing out it might not be sustainable if we get there in our present set up - something (the one thing?) I tend to agree with Fisher on

However the expectation is growing about what TM can achieve - give him a chance to get things right. I would rather we went in to it eyes open rather than shut and dreaming. Success is a factor of the money put in for the modern game and in the Championship where there are teams with massive parachute payments we are going to find it tough without some additional backing, something that so far our owners have been somewhat reticent about.

So just to be clear I want CCFC to be the best they can be - if that means promotion then great. Luckily the problem of how to sustain such a run and such a promotion is not mine :)

We'd need a new investor to do a Southampton. Other than that, you never know. I appreciate it's unlikely though.
