Tony Mowbray is hopeful that Reda Johnson will commit himself to Coventry City for a second season.

The Sky Blues boss is dealing with the 27-year-old’s agent personally in a bid to get the deal done but admits the defender is likely to have other offers on the table from rival clubs.

“Without saying it’s a done deal or anything like that, I’m hopeful,” said Mowbray of the former Sheffield Wednesday player who has an option in his current deal to extend his contract for a second year.

“I would say it’s ongoing. I have spoken to Reda’s agent half a dozen times over the last few weeks, even on my holidays. I get on well with him and have known him a lot of years. I’m hopeful with that but he’s also potentially got other offers coming his way".

“There’s still a lot of talking to be done and as I have told Reda and his agent I would like to keep him at the football club and have a real positive push to get out of this division.


“None of us want to be in this division. We want to at least be in the next one with a chance of getting into the Premier League. We all understand that and hopefully we can give Reda a platform to achieve his ambitions.”

Johnson made just 20 league appearances for the Sky Blues last term but was on the losing side only three times, proving a hugely influential figure when fit.

Although question marks remain over his ability to play a full season, Mowbray is confident he can manage the player’s fitness in order to achieve that.

Hope its not just the agent trying to talk Reda up to encourage a high wage deal. Still concerns around his fitness, we cannot afford to lose a large wage on someone in treatment room.

Clearly not an exact science, but if TM can keep him fit for a whole season (he has a good record since TM has been here) and we only lost double the games, we would be right up there

I'd expect both would have to agree. TM has already stated he wants Reda, so it is now up to Reda to want to stay, then terms will have to be agreed.

No doubt it favours the agent's aims to have other suitors, so he can negotiate better terms.

the way it was reported was we had the option of extending it another year but thats not as simple as it sounds apparently

Not too fussed either way. Too much of a liability and cost of he's out injured for half the season again.

I do recognize his effect when playing, but we can always bring in another good CB to replace Reda if it came to it. I'd trust TM to spot a good defender/leader.

only time it really seems to work is if its an automatic extension after a said amount of game which tbf it could have been in this one he probably fell well short of it

It will only be a good deal if his terms are reasonable. Although TM feels he can get more gametime out of Reda, he is still a risk with only 20 appearances last year. Yes impressive when he has played, but on our budget we need a bigger return; so if he gets too greedy I would quickly move onto another player. He is either commited to us or he isn't so we don't want it dragging on all summer.

Reda is a Championship quality player. The only reason we have the chance of signing him is the amount of games he misses. If he was a 40 games a season player he would be playing in the Championship.

I hope he stays, we are a better team when he is in it and he offers a goal threat at the other end.

Hopefully TM would be able to manage him adequately so he spends more time playing then training risking injury.

That is going, it would seem, to need input not only from the manager and coaches etc keeping him fit but also the player buying in to what is required and the advice he is given. I know everyone laughed about the comments about urine tests relating to Reda but if the player cant look after himself then we are unlikely to get our money's worth out of him.

We taught all our kids in mini & junoir rugby to get loaded with isotonics and water several hours before a game, some laughed at the yellow pee thing but it is right, if your pee is a darker colour than straw coloured yellow, you are dehydrated and it's too late to reverse it. if you are dehydrated your mental and physical ability drop off dramatically during a game and you are prone to pick up strains and injuries easier. all of us need to up our fluid intake to between 2-3L water daily just so our organs function better and it increases body metabolism so we feel heathier and fitter. So Reda must work with the strength and conditioning guys at the club, perhaps he should listen to them.

I may be wrong, but my recollection is that Reda said in an interview that he has the option of a further year - presumably on the same terms as last year. If so, he and his agent will delay taking up that option for as long as possible, to see if he gets a better offer. I assume his contract must specify a date when his option to renew will lapse.

Yep seems pointless, surely in this context all contracts then have the option of a further year as you can negotiate to extend there contract.

But he isn't in the Championship and all his games missed in the Championship with Sheff Wed wasn't due to injury. A Championship squad player....if he leaves us it will not be to a Championship side.

I think it's unlikely a Chanpionship team will agree terms with him.
He's played about 20 games a season on average?
If I was a championship manager, I'd want him to prove his fitness before I take that chance
