Lack of action/ mowbray's demands (1 Viewer)

So pre season training begins in less than a week and unsurprisingly we are yet to have any fresh faces through the door.

As I see daily updates of fellow league 1 clubs signing some decent names it really does beg the question as to what Mowbray's demands were. He stalled for a very long time presumably to negotiate wage/ transfer budgets but all he seems to have got so far is a few tins and paint and dodgy dave the painter and decorator to flick his roller around Ryton.

I had a lot of optimism around the delay in him signing to be honest, presuming that putting pen to paper meant he must have had a decent capacity for getting players in (financially) and also through his reputation.

Fall at the first hurdle? Thoughts?

You can't pose questions like that you heretic, you will be shot down in flames by the terminally optimistic ?!
Still early days to be fair, but time is ticking as you say...................

TM is no mug you can be assured of that

we have to be further patient and trust him and his staff to get it right

Maybe he was just negotiating his own package and his potential exit package rather than worry about player budgets etc

I think you've got to be prepared for the long haul. We won't have a 'complete' squad when the season starts IMO.

I'm happy with that though, we are at last going in the right direction, just sit back and enjoy the ride. We've waited long enough as it is, another season building is not a disaster IMO.

PUSB!

Lots of people are hedging their bets at the moment including TM. On a limited budget he has been trawling who is available for what? Also who can I get in on loan after pre seasonal? Who can I get back on loan? Ward isn't ready for Tottenham first team, they might not want him going abroad, so still a possible? Samuel and Pennington are likely to miss pre season, so their best option might be to come back. Yes these players could play at a higher level, but would they play every week like they would here?

I expect only about 4-5 signings this summer.

Get your heads rounds the fact it is a two year project minimum!

And who in your opinion on this long list of signed players by others should we have gone for then ?

I'm sorry but I really don't understand the hype surrounding TM and the saviour status he seems to have gathered from nothing. He took WBA up sure but let's be honest they were a yo yo club with a very good chance of going up. He did nothing at Celtic (arguably the easiest job in world football due to huge lack of serious competition) and his role at boro despite being a cult hero was particularly uninspiring.

Yes he's a big name but let's be honest so was Chris Coleman, Iain Dowie (at the time), Mickey Adams (at the time) etc. the list goes on and on.

For me he's bang average unless he proves otherwise. That said if he turns us around his work is nothing short of loaves and fishes stuff

Well off the top of my head i can think of pope and clarke both gone to bury (as well as them resigning Kelvin Etuhu)
Marley Watkins at Barnsley
Ebanks Blake at Chesterfield
Andy williams moved from Swindon to Donny

Would have taken all of them and that's the tip of the iceberg.

Thanks for the sarcy tone though ;)

Why don't we sign up those names such as Simeon Jackson? It is a shame Frank Nouble is not a free agent now too.

Difference is the players i have mentioned are regular, recent proven goalscorers at this level. Simeon Jackson had been on a constant hobble since leaving norwich and Frank's nouble's best scoring season was a mighty 4 goals

You could equally argue there was a reason Jackson was available so late, and why we were able to sign him so late...

I don't think a lot of fans see him as some miracle worker. He does bring a lot of experience with him for our level though, but he still has to work with a limited budget (smaller than what exists in a lot of people's imagination). He has a big job on and it will take time, certainly more than about the four weeks you have given him. Remember he said he was starting from scratch as the club had no database of players.

It is not just about getting x amount of players through the door anyway, it is trying to get the right personalities as well, the right blend of youth and experience. It is about getting the best out of your budget....across the board not just in a couple of positions.

It seems to me CCFC was being run by people who didn't know their arse from their elbow. TM has brought his staff in and is now looking to restructure despite the limited funds. Getting the left and right hand working together is a step in the right direction and whilst nobody knows yet where we'll finish the season, what's going on has to be positive and this will be picked up on by the players wherever they come from.

Ebanks Blake is living off his name has barely played or scored-
2013–2014Ipswich Town9(0)
2015Preston North End9(1)
Marley Watkins has played well in Scotland which is a very low class of football.
Pope- scored 10 goals last year not really what we need is it?
Clarke- Has barely played for 18 months- is 31 is it now? and has no loyalty?
Williams- fair enough I would have liked him but a bit out of our price range I assume?

I'd rather wait and get 5 good players now, finish mid table and get another 5 next year then challenge, we need the right players not just names.

Think some people need to pay attention to what Mowbray's plan is. If he's in no mad rush to sign players then should we really be as concerned as some people seem to be?

http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/sport/football/football-news/coventry-city-no-rush-new-9389273

Nobody says they are in a mad rush but we are Coventry City and we are in League 1, if you think people are going to be satisfied with a long drawn out 2/3 year plan then you are mistaken. To regain the fans trust and capture the imagination of the City the football club needs to come out of the blocks firing on all cylinders against Wigan, not start to pick up a few results sometime mid November. All I've said is that there appears to be a little of that old SISU chestnut 'blind faith' sneaking in again. Mowbray's teams have done OK but he's not Merlin either !

I'd be happy for that myself, but that would mean not waiting till later for loan players...

Any rebuilding plan in mind doesn't mean 'we might win a game after three months'. Rate him or not, Mowbray's not a moron.

Gotta be honest. I would be happy with a 10 year plan if it actually came to fruition. We are so starved of success, if someone offered me a League One play off final at wembley in 2025, I'd happily take it.

As hard as it is to do we have just got to be patient and give the guy a chance to do something. Give TM time to act and mould a team then make judgements

It is good to see the club being run as a football club not a balance sheet exercise for investors. It is good to see CCFC fans with a bit of optimism after years of strife. I wouldn't want to belittle that or be carried away by it either.

What has actually changed?
We have a manager with a good reputation. Certainly. Almost unexpected to have him. But it is a tough ask and he has been asked to stir the pot to make it happen. A pot that may well be smaller than last year. His name brings expectation and that brings risks of too much hype. He hasn't actually done much yet. He only just kept us up

Ticket prices are down that is absolutely a positive and welcome. Could they have kept the prices the same and sold many though? Lower prices unless there is significant increase in numbers means less income...... and smaller budgets. You could argue that our owners had no choice but to lower prices - that said it is a welcome move for put upon fans

TM has brought in his own team. Added to the coaching staff. That means he has added to coaching costs. Something somewhere has to give if the overall pot is the same or smaller doesn't it?

The club seems to have learnt some marketing lessons with more adverts etc. The shop has moved back, but why? Was it a moment of clarity to have it by the ground (logical) or was the licence at the other site ceased? or was it the new partners said this makes no sense we need footfall especially on match days? or was it a cheaper option?

Whilst I am pleased to see some of the positive changes , to see CCFC becoming more of a club than a clever finance vehicle, isn't what we are all so pleased with simply the basics of how a FL club is run. Its good that somewhere at the club a light of understanding was switched on but 7 years to get to a basic average club position? The club deserves credit but ....

apologies if that comes across as sceptical, this is actually the first time in years I have felt any positivity about a coming season

I agree we need to be patient and let him do what he needs to do. But when we only just avoided relegation last year, and the main talk of signings is just extending contracts or signing loan players we had before it is a little concerning.

We lost to five teams last season who finished below us had we beaten them we would have. Made the play offs one thing I am certain of Mowbray will recruit better players than we had last year

Or perhaps he was more interested in getting the correct inferstructure in place?

Would you rather Mowbray be in charge of the budget and we've signed no one yet or Waggot be in charge and we've signed another 5 Shaun Millers already?

No need to panic, the majority of deals are done in July, very little transfer activity completed by any club in the UK and beyond, Contracts run out at the end of the month, meaning the club is still paying that particular player, no need to sign a player now and start paying them if they are already under contract for another week.

Stop panicking.

In the last 3 seasons we have brought in a total of 16 players during the pre-season (contracts not loans) Fleck, Barton, Jennings, Kilbane, Malaga, Elliot, Edge, Webster, Mansett, Pugh, Reda, Swanson, Marcus,Jackson, JOB, Miller

JOB, Reda & Fleck - worked out the rest failed- not sure what I'm saying but our ability to spot a player in pre-season with the budget we are working to has and now seems to be a problem
