You need enough goalkeepers for them to be able to train effectively as a group. I think that’s all it is.

Like all players on the bench he should be trying to convince the manager he is ready to go on if needed, goalkeeper or not. That is just basic professionalism - prepare to be called upon, let the manager make his decision, make sure you’re ready if he calls you, and if not, wish your mate good...
