Very sadly I learnt from friends that Jim Twynham passed away earlier today.

Us older folk will remember Jim as the voice of Highfield Road and into the Ricoh era. I cannot be certain but I believe Jim started in his role as stadium announcer either in 86/87 or 87/88 - I wonder if Jim Brown might know?? - I am also uncertain as to when Jim stepped down but am guessing he completed at least 20 years in that role. I worked on the odd occasion with him in the radio box around the turn of the century and certainly knew that at that point he hadn't missed a game at any level since starting. I also helped run quizzes at the Chestnut Tree for about 9 years with him and Graham Wood the other co founder of the Silk disco which was so popular in the city throughout the 70 and 80's. - always great nights.....

Jim loved Coventry City more than I could ever describe - along with family and the odd pint of lager and roll-up (!) the club was his life. He still went to the Ricoh having been given a season ticket for life after his retirement. He was a true Sky Blue in every way and a decent bloke - something most of us only can aspire to. So rest in peace Jim and thank you for your unique voice and especially your friendship to so many of us.

My condolences to his children and family....

Gutted. Lovely bloke. One of my earliest memories was hearing his voice. Spent many evenings at Trust meetings and at games talking about the City.

He was the announcer at Wembley for England games and cup finals for a few years as well as HR and the early Ricoh days.

Very sorry to hear of Jim's passing. Worked with him for a few years in the Council House, when we started working life. He would bring in the most obscure LP's bought from Jill Hanson, starting his collection prior to forming Silk with Graham Wood. Silk covered a few family functions for us, including our wedding back in '74, always great nights. Caught the quiz in the Chestnut on occasions. He had a great, unique voice enhanced, I'm sure. by his 'roll ups'!! His announcing career with our Sky Blues has never been bettered. A true Sky Blue. He gave Clive (please don't say anything too meaningful or controversial!) a good run for his money recently as a guest on the Friday night phone in. Condolences to his family, RIP Jim, you will be missed.

I didn't either until recently. He mentioned it before kick off at the Checkatrade Final. The pic below was taken there. The striped suit was his original one. I think he's the only person who has ever been given a Season ticket for life by the club. Hopefully that seat can been kept empty next season as a small tribute.

Is it an urban myth that he could have joined forces with Pete Waterman in his early days but wouldn't as he had a full time job and wouldn't take the risk?

Very sad news. The sound of his voice very distinctive for anybody who attended HR.
His love for the club came across clearly in his tone and pitch when announcing goals; loud and clear for ours; barely audible muffle for the opposition's. R.I.P.

Have a feeling he was a DJ in his younger years so that could well be true. Pete Chambers is the man who would know. Hopefully he'll give Jim a nice tribute in the Telegraph.

First met Jim in '89 when I was 13. I'd won a competition from the programme for a football signed by the team (which I still have!). As well as getting tickets for a match and slap up meal in the main stand the prize presentation was on the pitch so got to meet Jim there.
Met him a few more times since usually in the Chestnut. Proper gent. Representative of happier times at HR and will be greatly missed. RIP Sky Blue Jim.

Jim was a lovely bloke. He was one of a kind and will be sadly missed.
Was always at games and Trust meetings with a pint in his hand and a willingness to share his thoughts and memories.

God Bless you Jim.

Used to love the subdued way he would announce the goalscorers name when it was the opposition!

Couldn't really remember much from HR but since you have mentioned that I can now! Really sad news and hopefully the club will pay tribute.

Glad to hear he had a ST for life too.

It's a shame there isn't a game where the fans could have a minute's applause :(

I remember Jim from the early 70's when his Silk Disc would play at the Plough on London Rd. Although it was a rock disco I recall him enthusing about "Move on Up" by Curtis Mayfield and dancing a solo to it. I think his day job at that time was in the road tax office in Greyfriars Lane.
A true Sky Blue.
RIP Jim.

Jim was a regular poster on here and a good one. I knew him well from my days in the Chestnut Tree when I lived in Cov.

We shared many City stories over a few pints and the old local will never be the same when I go back home.

RIP mate
