Gaming PCs and laptops (1 Viewer)

anyone got a proper gaming rig? Having a discussion with someone about the spec and costs as he was going for a gaming laptop at about 2k but my understanding was that you can't upgrade when they become obsolete? Is that correct?

I'd guess it depends what you wanted to upgrade. Laptops are always harder to upgrade than Desktops anyway so you are usually stuck with basics like RAM upgrades whereas Desktops you can upgrade graphics cards, processors etc.

PC is much easier to upgrade components. Not impossible to upgrade a laptop, but a hassle.

I'm building my first PC this weekend, in fact. Final piece arrived today (windows 10) so all set.

i5 6500
Gigabyte H170 mobo
Crucial 750gb SSD
WD 1TB HDD
EVGA gtx1060 6gb
EVGA 550w G2 psu
HyperX fury 8gb ram (2x4gb) 2133mhz ddr4 (will buy more when necessary).

Will take pictures if you're interested!

I'm no expert, but shouldn't you have a much bigger SSD to run the games on?

Windows will boot faster with what you have, but it won't make any difference to the games, will it? Running the games on SSD should make their loading much faster I would think.

Guess it depends on how many games he is going to play.

750GB is still not too shabby for an OS / couple of games.

Not too bad. Considering it's all come in under a grand (including screen and peripherals) and get to start building it today!

You are right. The SSD will be my C-drive and most of my programs will run from it (one or two games, office). Typical storage (photos, music, video) will all be stored on the mechanical

Furthermore to my post, I love tinkering and upgrading, not to the latest specs as I find they're too expensive, but to say 2-5 years old stuff.

No overclocking for me. The risk far outweighs the reward in my opinion. But I did buy the Cooler master EVO aftermarket cooler for it. Just building now, it's a bit of fun

When I was younger I could spend hours making stuff work, now I just get annoyed. No patience at all.

I had a custom pc, but bought an imac about 7 years ago now and still going solid.

Not even a teensy weeny bit? xD That's the reason I asked about the cooler and it sounds ok to me. I's a lot of fun OCing, unfortunately I can't OC mine due to the motherboard being 10 years old and limited.
Tbh, my PC is a bit like Triggers broom, always had the same one for years but it's had 6 new brushes and 4 new handles!

I'm self taught in building, repairing and fault finding PC's. I was never a geeky kid but I'm a geeky adult.

never had an iMac or any Apple product tbh, I know they're great machines thoigh.

So, I bit the bullet and went mad on Black Friday buying brand new stuff for a new PC build, which isn't in my nature, as I normally just make-do and upgrade a little at a time.
Most of the stuff was on sale:
Ryzen 5 1600 (6 core/12 Threads) AMD Ryzen 5 1600 6 Core AM4 CPU/Processor with Wraith Spire 95W cooler - Ebuyer £157
Asus AMD PRIME B350-PLUS AM4 Socket ATX Mobo Asus AMD PRIME B350-PLUS AM4 Socket ATX Motherboard - Ebuyer £80
This wireless card came free! ASUS PCE-N10 Wireless-N150 PCIe Adapter - Ebuyer
PowerColor AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB Red Dragon Graphics card PowerColor AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB Red Dragon V2 Graphics Card £220
Cooler Master CM590 III White Gaming PC case Cooler Master CM590 III White Gaming PC case with USB 3.0 £25 I don't normally go for a Windowed case but found this one quite tasteful!
Lite-On 512GB M.2 SSD £100
2 x 8 GB PC19200 DDR4 2400MHz 288 Pin Memory = 16GB £110
Around £690 altogether. not including below.
I already have a 500GB HDD, a Corsair PSU HX520W Fully Modular and Windows 10.

That Guy, how did you get on with your 1st build?

Covstu, what did you and your mate decide on in the end?

Roughly how much did all that cost? My eldest wants a gaming PC to play Minecraft on it. I'm guessing the spec he needs is nowhere near that. Any idea on what I would need and how much it might cost?

I'll edit my post to reflect what I paid, but the prices have gone up since Black Friday!

My Spec would be overkill for Minecraft tbh.
Try this site "Can I Run it?" Minecraft Requirements Test in the meantime.

Are you looking to build a PC yourself, buy it or looking to buy a Laptop?

I was looking at buying originally but seems to me you get a better deal building. A laptop would be ideal, but my experiences the owning them are they seem to slow down quite quickly as software upgrades, and components see better days. I'm not bad with tech so I wouldn't mind having a bash at building!

You would be able to build one piss easy, if everything you have bought is compatible then it just slots together.

It's when you have to try and figure out what works with what it gets annoying.

If you get the stuff and have any issues post it up! The only thing I would say is be careful with the CPU if you fit that, if you bend the pins on the motherboard you will probably have to buy a new one. Just take your time with that bit.

The site I posted "PC-Part-Picker" shows if the components are compatible and even shows you the wattage as you're adding stuff, so you know what Power Supply Unit to buy, it's a great site!
Also Stupot, ground yourself before fitting the parts as this stuff is sensitive to static, just touch a metal object which is earthed.

That does the hard work for you then!
