Shipley and Jones (1 Viewer)

Is it at least a partial answer to the problem down the flanks for now?

I have been disappointed with Vincenti on the whole when he has been wide and I like the fact that Shipley has a great left foot on him, but my main concern with this new potential combination is that we quite often get Jones switching wings from right to left. Just wonder if Shipley would be suited to switching wings and playing from the right.

Am guessing that as we won yesterday the likelihood is that Robins will go for pretty much the same team on Tuesday.

I owe Shipley an apology, a couple of weeks back I said I would have preferred Ponticelli to come on instead of him when we had to make an early change. I was wrong, he is a better player than I gave him credit for. In answer to the op I think he does give the side more balance and deserves to start games while his form holds.

Agree. Just think it may nullify the option of Jones switching wings. Obviously it would be great if Shipley could do a job coming in from the right.

I don't think Shipley is an out and out winger as such. He did take their full back on when he dragged it back then put it round him but he is an option. Even just for his set pieces.

Shipley is certainly very versatile. Not sure what his best position is. I've felt he's looked more comfortable at left back and left midfield than in centre midfield which I thought was his preferred position. I did like the extra defensive cover he gave to Haynes and they seemed to have an understanding with each other further up the pitch too. Again I wouldn't mind a more defensive minded left midfielder if it grants Kelly a bit more freedom. Don't think the lack of option to switch with Jones is a problem once Grimmer is back and getting beyond him. Plus his set pieces were way better than we've been used to - gets to keep the shirt for the forseeable for me and I'm sure Robins will give it him too, he's very loyal to players when they've had a good game.

Apart from that one corner he over hit, his set pieces were excellent. He didn't look out of place and has earned himself another start on Tuesday.

He is going to be a class act, if I were the scouts watching, he would be first on my list ahead of jones and the others.

Yep very pleasing the way he's taken to senior football. A much improved day for set pieces at Lincoln and we actually looked more threatening from them against a good side in the air.

Rod Mcdonald and Tom Davies going in the box from the back with Maxime Biamou is not a bad trio to go into attack set pieces with predators on the ground of Nazon and JJ.

Yes but is more about a players attitude. Know your strengths and weaknesses. If they are confident crossing a ball let them get on with it, they don't have to be Ryan Giggs or George Best.

I had the same concern when folk suggested Haynes play LM, that he wouldn’t offer the same versatility and allow us to alternate what side of the pitch Jones played during games

Yesterday I don’t think Shipley went to the right did he?

So perhaps it will remove that option, but since Jones is pretty decent cutting inside to get a shot away, is it that important for him to play on the right?

Atleast Shipley being a natural midfielder he’s going to be used to getting forward.

I think this is where we focus too much on JJ and hope he's the key to unlock a game. I was very keen giving Haynes a run further forwards as I think he's attacking attributes he could offer but Shipley looked solid yesterday.

We need a balance on both sides of the pitch, ideally the luxury of pace both sides gives you extra threat but if you've got someone on the other side giving the commitment, energy and passing range like Shipley who also brings set piece abilities to the team then you have to go with balance and JJ has to do the business his side and let the others do there's for the benefit of the team.

When we deploy Jones on one side though and it doesn't pay off we DO switch him to see if he can get any joy on the opposite flank.

It IS an option we utilise.

A few weeks ago we wondered if Devon Kelly-Evans was the answer. I hope Shipley is but need to give it time before we know. I do think he could be a very good player though and gives us an obvious upgrade on set pieces.

would still prefer to see Shipley CM over Doyal or Kelly, we lack creativity there and rely so much on Jodi and i think Shippley would give us more. Who would play on the wing instead, not sure? Maybe start using Haynes further up

Thing I’m liking about at the moment is his attitude on pitch, Connor Thomas never got to the stage where he looked as confident out there
That's because he couldn't play football!

I think people get overwhelmed by something new/different or enthusiasm from a player who is new in the team. People were pulling their chains about Devon Kelly Evans a few weeks ago but I couldn't see what the who har was all about. Just enthusiasm got him through one or two games. Has now faded into the background once again and I very much doubt he will make another 5 starts this season.
Shipley's appearances have had a lot more substance to them and I can see him being in and around the first team on merit till the end bar injury.

Shipley looks to have something we've been missing this year - the ability to see quick passes forward and take opportunities for long range shots from midfield
We've been too ponderous in some games especially when teams park the bus at the Ricoh
I suspect he'll start against Crawley
Ben Stevenson was doing that last year but his injury against Blackburn appears to have set him back
