Some stats we need to address (1 Viewer)

We have only scored 5 goals in the first half this season

Only 1 goal has come from open play and not involved a assist or goal from Nazon or Jones. And that was the mess of a goal by McNulty @ Grimsby

No home league goal this season from Pont, McNulty, Baimou, Thomas or Beavon

Well Ponticelli has hardly played, so don't lump him in with the likes of McNulty, Biamou or Beavon. None of those will score in a month of Saturdays.

If you genuinely believe Ponticelli is at this stage of his career worth a starting place then it’s pointless debating with you.

He's scored more than McNulty, Biamou or Beavon in a lot less games.
He may not be ready in every aspect of the game, but the only way he'll get ready is by being played.

He hasn’t scored a league goal

My favourite stat this season is that we haven't conceded an equaliser in the league. I'd love us to play Kelly more advanced against some of the poorer teams at home. I think we'd really destroy some teams if we got an early goal - only one goal in the opening 15 minutes all season and that was thanks to the corner flag at Crewe but we've scored 7 goals in the last 15 minutes of games, which is a tribute to how good we are on the counter towards the end of open games.

There are some who believe that our strikers are going to come good. Over a third of the way through the season and absolutely no evidence to back that up.
Is it the strikers fault? Possibly more to do with the style of play we have adopted.
If I was allowed a bet I would wager that Ponticelli will score more goals than the rest of them put together if he was given a run.

Look at the below stats, and I rest my case!
View attachment 8410

McNulty has scored 4 - Grimsby, Luton, Shrewsbury and Walsall - ponticelli hit an attempt against Mansfield over the bar after his first attempt was saved.

It’s a pointless discussion. The other players except Thomas have much more experience and overall contribution. He’s a cameo impact sub

Of course they have more experience.
But sitting on the bench watching them shoot won't help him;)

So who would you play up front and why If Nazon is banned and McNulty is injured?

Don't think McNulty is injured so think Biamou and him up front tomorrow night anyhow,
If not agree with Grendel Biamou and Beavon for tough away trip to a physical Stevenage on a Tuesday night.
At present boths ability to hold ball up and win things in air far superior to Pont.

Pont could be a great impact sub like the Duck has been to chuck on for last 25/30 minutes tomorrow imo.

Those are the BBC stats being quoted. They haven't been updated for a few weeks and have never included Checkatrade or Carabao cup games. Ponticelli played 81 minutes against Luton and the full 90 at Mansfield and the blinkered few who have placed him on a pedestal have conveniently forgotten all the chances he missed in those games. He should be coming on with 20 to 30 minutes left in open games - I thought he might have come on for Biamou with 15 to go on Saturday for example when we were countering but also understand why Robins wanted to keep Biamou's height on the pitch.
5 goals in the first half is yet another stat that backs up the impact of the tactical choices being made on the pitch and yet people are still twisting it into a personnel issue. Myopic.

it is a game of opinions however

Ponticelli has got into more positions to score in those games than Mcnulty and beavon in all of their's. So yes while he may have missed chances, he has also scored a couple (albeit in the cups)

I would back him to score over the others - even if he does miss chances on the way -

I wouldnt back Beavon to run for a bus

I've no issue with him missing chances, he won't score every time. It was just pointing out the incorrect stats being used.

He will miss chances, it should be expected at this level. People have just got all misty eyed over his U23 scoring record and demanded he plays because we've been missing the few chances we create. Well he's done the same when he's come into the league games and also showed that some important parts of his all-round play still require development. Yet people are still battering McNulty and clamouring for Ponticelli to start games even though he hasn't been able to replicate that scoring form against the better teams yet, while simultaneously using incorrect stats to try and prove their point.

What I find amusing is that people keep saying give McNulty etc time it will come but when it comes to Ponticelli, its well he played two games and didn' do he is not ready.
As for putting him on a pedestal none of them are quiye worthy of that yet.
Will see if things change come the end of the season.
