Coventry City player ratings: Sky Blues assessed

Andy Turner has Doyle down as an 8 today. I thought he was quite poor.

Anyone else think he did okay?

I can't quite get my head around Haynes winning the MOTM either. For me Jordan Shipley was easily our best player and Haynes was below par, apart from one or two good crosses.

I see he has marked Burge as a 7 too. One good save I grant you, but he was dithery, failed to come and collect the ball on a couple of occasions and on another almost lost possession of the ball which would have given their striker a walk in goal.

Burge 5.5 - Good save, but lacked command of his area and was very dithery and jittery.

Grimmer 6 - Good going forwards, but once again beaten far too easily when defending

Willis 6 - Really not that much to do overall.

McDonald 6 - Ditto, though he did make an error that could have cost us, but then made a couple of nice forward runs on occasion.

Haynes 5 - Some very poor stuff from him, but he did put in a couple of very decent crosses. I don't think he was terrible, but he was certainly didn't perform well.

Davies - 6. Thought he seemed a little nervy today and some of his distribution wasn't up to scratch.

Doyle - 5. Not a good performance today from Michael Doyle and he gave away possession far too often.

Shipley 7.5. MOTM for me. Worked the ball well and put in some lovely dead balls.

Beavon - 6. Not in the game enough, though to be fair to him we did keep pinging the ball above his head. Couple of nice bits of footwork and a great ball in to Nazon, who should have done better, but airkicked instead. Not enough times in the box though and therefore he's just not going to score.

Nazon -6. So frustrating. Far too greedy and the whole game would probably have been changed if he had just put that ball through to McNulty early on which would have given him a clear run on goal. Instead, Nazon chose to shoot and blazed the ball over the bar. He did look dangerous though at least.

McNulty - 6.5. Should have done better on a number of occasions, but at least he was getting into goalscoring positions and in the end bagged his goal.

Agree...Willis was a cut above. Really made Rod look slow and cumbersome.

Burge 6 - Took an absolute age for so many kicks before we went 1-0 down and nearly gave them a gift when he came out of his box and was indecisive.
Grimmer 6 - Gave an important attacking impetus on the right but I've marked him down as he had a very good chance to hit the target from the edge of the box and lost his man for the goal.
Willis 6.5 - Looked much better central, typically strong and athletic, but got sucked towards the ball again for the goal. Wasn't his man that scored but could have probably cut the cross out if he was marking up. Some awful long balls too.
McDonald 6 - Quieter game from him today. Didn't do much wrong but not up to his usual high standard either.
Davies 6 - Was doing ok til his awful control and booking but he seemed understandably nervous after that with the ref blowing for absolutely everything.
Haynes 5 - Hardly got forward and looked hesitant on the ball. A couple of decent crosses in amongst a lot of bad ones. Poorest he's been since his run in the team and yet should have had the most freedom he's had as a wingback.
Doyle 5 - His passing today was atrocious and I thought he looked tired after 3 games in a week. Guilty of chipping balls to strikers heads when there were better options to feet.
Shipley 6.5 - Enjoyed his set pieces and what he did, he did well but it wasn't the performance I hoped we were going to see as he didn't get up the pitch enough. Had clearly been asked to play in Kelly's position and if anyone wasn't sure Kelly is asked to play within himself, Shipley's performance today should prove it.
Beavon 5 - Reminds me of Tudgay in that the head is willing but the legs are not. So many offsides first half too. Not helped by the service he received either as it was mostly head height.
Duck 5 - Would love to know if it's stupidity or arrogance that makes him play the way he does. Should be fined a weeks wages for ignoring the 2 passes he should have played to McNulty which could have killed the game in the first 15 minutes. Needs reminding that only 1 of his 6 goals have come from outside the box.
McNulty 6.5 - Cracking striker's goal and might have had more if he'd been put through twice by Nazon. Took his only big chance but failed to get shots off for a couple of half chances. Looks fit again after appearing a bit porky after his injury.

Stevenson 6.5 - Looked lively today, neat on the ball and provided some much needed forward impetus. Too many times he passed and moved and never got the ball back because an easier option out wide was chosen.
Ponticelli 5 - Thought it was naive today - ran around like a headless chicken when he came on (if that chicken had a jaw like Texas Pete from Super Ted*) and didn't spend enough time in the box for someone who's main attribute is finishing.

Robins 6 - If you're going to play 3-5-2/3-4-3 at home against Crawley then I'm not sure you needed any defensive mids with 3 centre backs there nevermind 2 DMs. It again left a gap centrally, not as big as the gap when we play 4-4-2 because of the 3 forwards we had today but big enough that it forced too many balls long, which it turn made it seem odd to drop Biamou.
I like Robins, his dry humour, the way he's gradually bringing through the U23s, his man management skills are evident and the way he talks in general. I just wish he wasn't so damn defensive in his systems. Plus points for bringing Stevenson on and changing the formation at HT which postively impacted the game.

*Just realised that the Texas Pete/Ponticelli comparison didn't work because the chicken was headless and therefore had no jaw.

General comments.
Back 4 solid - thought Grimmer created a lot of our attacking impetus and his constant running with and without the ball looked the most likely way of opening them up - particularly in the second half. Increasingly impressed with him going forward (does get beaten occasionally by the winger - but so do most full backs!). Thought Doyle was average - but always gives his all. Nazon was annoyingly greedy. McNulty good game, and I thought Beavon worked hard, although the lady lino seemed to have it in for him. Shipley's corners needed a Biamou or Vincenti on the end of them - disappointed our centre backs didn't get on the end of any corners.

Oh yeah - the ref was poor (as was lady lino), and even poorer for not addressing Crawley's time wasting.

Doyle has had some stick today for his passing but a lot of passes by certain player are sideways or backward but his were trying to make things happen direct something we don't try often enough anyone can make nothing passes but you win nothing if you don't take risks but having said that what was Burge doing so nearly threw the game completely.

Burge - 5 Starting to look a bit nervy over the last couple of games
Grimmer - 4 Gave the ball away at virtually every opportunity. Got forward but lost the ball most of the time and looked awful today.
Haynes - 7 Defended pretty well, got forward and looked more dangerous with the ball
Rod - 6 Did ok but one or two dodgy moments
Davies - 6 as above
Willis - 7 Looked better than the other 2 centre halves
Doyle - 7 Tried to move the ball forward and linked better than he has previously
Shipley - 7 Looked good and linked up well around the box
Beavon 6 - worked hard but not much goal threat
Mcnulty - 7.5 Linked up well around the box. Needs to be greedier when in the box
Nazon - 5 Give him 10 decisons on the pitch and he'll make 8 wrong ones. Looks like a skillfull kid who's used to beating teams on his own.

Stephenson - 7 We moved the ball a bit quicker when he came on.
Ponticelli - 6 worked hard but poor control once took him away from goal when running through.
DKE not enough time to make an impact

Ref 4 - Never got to grips with Crawley players acting and time wasting.

Didn't really get the Shipley love in today, he looks much better out wide and did not look comfortable as a holding midfielder.

Stevenson was much better when he came on, but neither a patch on Kelly.

I didn't understand the substitutions today, Stevenson switch made sense and worked however Kelly-Evans offered nothing I'd of rather McNulty drop a little deeper. Biamou was the option we needed as the ball kept being lumped up but kept coming back, no one could make it stick. Unfortunately Ponticelli was like a rabbit in the lights with his golden chance when through on goal but is clearly gonna be a star if given time to grow, he's not quite our goal machine yet.

Funny how many gave Haynes a bad score for looking poor it was his excellent cross that got us our goal.
Yes he did have couple of mare crosses but I didn't think he was worse then Beavon.

Trouble is with Grimmer is he gets beaten far too easily. Players just waltz past him with no challenge coming in whatsoever.

But in my opinion his excellent cross didn't make up for all the poor play and I don't think Beavon did that much wrong apart from keep getting caught offside. Beavon just wasn't in the game enough, so not praising him, but he too put in an excellent cross for Nazon, from which he probably should have scored, or at least really tested the keeper from. One excellent cross from Haynes and one great pass from Beavon.

And what was that ridiculous free kick all about from Haynes? He had absolutely no need to give that away, but left us facing a very dangerous free kick just outside the box.

Reading the comments for the past few games is usually the goals are coming from Haynes not closing down and being bollocked when we concede, it would be difficult for Robins to take him out the team considering he put the cross in for the game without affecting his confidence but I would be tempted to play Camwell against Boreham because by all accounts he has a decent cross on him although it will probably be Stokes for game time

Just watched the highlights and have to say that non challenge from Grimmer where the ball hit the bar was quite scandalous.

Hope Robins gives him a rocket for that.

Willis being another culprit.

Willis certainly hasn't been tight enough to his marker on a few goals this season.

Ssssh! People don't like to mention his errors. He's kept clean sheets next to concrete Rod you know at the Ricoh where teams come and play negative football and try and snatch a win

It's that ginger fella, Haynes. He's crap. Let's talk about his errors because there the ones that matter.

I'm all seriousness Willis has been excellent at times this season yet can be poor too and switches off from time to time and has to be accountable for a few mistakes.

Mistakes will happen, it's how goals are taken but some errors get glossed over.

I was a bit puzzled by high marks for Willis yesterday, because both him and McDonald had a pretty easy afternoon for the most part.
