Just sitting here, a bit bored (as usual!) and got to thinking what the first ever record I bought was (7" single). I remember it being Silence is Golden by the Tremeloes in May '67. The next one was Magical Mystery Tour E.P. by the Beatles in December '67. As I was brought up in care, I didn't get pocket money as such, so had to save up whatever few pennies I could scrounge. Incidentally, I ended up many years later with a collection of nigh on 4,500-5,000 singles! My last ever shop bought one was Belfast Child by Simple Minds in 1989. What are your memories of the first record ever bought? (or for the youngsters on here, CD single?)

Growing up in the sixties we always had music playing in our house. My dad fancied himself as a bit of a crooner and was always singing away doing his Crosby impression.I was music mad as was my sister and Saturday morning was going into town and buying a single.If I recall my first record was probably a Beatles one or a Stones 45. My sister loved Dave Clark Five, who were big back then, and she had a soft spot for Adam Faith. Great memories !

I haven't known what the Christmas number one was for at least 20 years. I lost interest about the mid 1990's. They were much better back then. More thought out. Christmassy etc.

First record I ever bought was "Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits" LP on vinyl.
After hearing "The times they are a changin'" and "Blowin' in the wind" on the radio, I just had to hear more.
This was the first version and this was the cover photo.
Must be pretty rare now, could not find the vinyl album with this cover on eBay.

My Dad spent many years in Australia and he used to like to sing "A pub with no beer" and "Down on misery farm". He liked Burl Ives, George Formby, Lonnie Donegan and Connie Francis. He also loved bagpipe music. That is my musical; heritage, but it did not hold me back!

Same as first one I bought!

Here is an old 'un,, in the first 5 or 6 albums I bought, from back of Rolling Stones album, Through the past Darkly. Note the Mono/Stereo bit at the top.
Unfortunately not a first edition, I didn't buy it till I went to Uni a few years after it was released.

The first few records I bought were all mono. Stereo was unknown or rare and was regarded as something very exotic. You needed a special diamond needle on your record player to avoid damaging the stereo records. Many records were available in both mono and stereo versions and when you'd buy one they would ask which you wanted.

My dad was always singing or whistling. Did my mums head in at times. And when he'd had a few in the pub he'd be off again ! He liked Perry Como, Jim Reeves, Nat King Cole, and most crooners. The record player was always on in the house, that's why I love music so much I guess.

I had to suffer 2 Way Family Favourites, I think it was on Sundays when the religious programs were on telly.

Jean genie by Bowie. We didn’t have a record player when I was really young...I pestered mum and dad for months and we finally got one rather than just listen on radio or tape the chart show on a less than quality recorder. Musical tastes for me now is more folk and polyphony...but happy days.
I love the ‘what you currently listening to’ thread and always try and find the tracks on YouTube.

I have a soft spot for ‘slow train coming’ but I think ‘highway 61 revisited’ is my fav.

I cannot remember. However, apparently, Morrissey used to ask this very question to people auditioning. If they chose something he thought inappropriate he wouldn't hire them.

Three songs my father liked. He had these on old 78s. They sound so old-fashioned now.

My first few purchases were a little eclectic.
