Have recently brought myself a new camera - Canon SX510.

Know nothing about cameras or photography, but thought I'd spend a bit extra than I would on a normal digital camera, and chose a super zoom. Not sure if that was a good decision or bad. Suppose time will tell.

Don't expect it to be on par with professional set ups, far from it, just plan to use it when I can.

Any suggestion on where could be good locations to start and get to try it out?

No idea on what I'm doing, so I suspect I'll be using the 'auto' mode for quite some time :)

Try Coombe Abbey, plenty of interesting things and a wide variety of things.

You can get pretty nice panoramic views of the city from St Michael's tower. Lots of steps but worth it!

I suppose it depends on what sort of view you want, SW88. I once took a great shot of Coventry from Rowley Road by the airport. Nice sunny day, zoomed in a bit and a great pic. If I still have it somewhere, I'll put it up.

Ah. I see where it is now Rich! I thought that was the Needles in the distance! The picture is looking towards Alum Bay. If you went there, you would HAVE to drive directly past my old place! We lived on the only road out to the Needles. (We've moved to Newport now.)

Just want somewhere to try it out really. Not that I've any idea what I'm doing with a camera other than pointing and shooting :)

That's the whole idea of good pictures SW88. If you see something you like, take a picture - take loads of pictures. One will always turn out the best. It could be a panoramic view, or a close-up of a flower or an insect. It could be an action picture. The world is your oyster! Get out and enjoy yourself with a camera! Then put you pics up on here!

Did you ever get any further with your interest in photography?

Photo I took on holiday, love the colours of the sky and the way it reflects of the sea.

Hey HH!
Wouldn’t say I ever did get much further forward with it as an interest but I still do look for places to wander around with my camera with me.
Have spent 4 days in Ireland this week. Walked near on 7 miles on the first day. Some of the views were amazing! Went up to Bray Head and walked where ever the path took me, then on the other days (was there for 4) I went to Dublin, Kilcoole, Greystones, Killiney Hill (again you get some beautiful views on a clear day), Powerscourt Waterfall, Dalkey and
Dun Laoghaire Harbour
Here are some of the pictures I took although I’m still not sure I know what I’m doing with the camera :) that said, I did venture out of auto mode and some came out pretty well!

SW88: These shots are really good! I love the close up of the berries! Nice close-up with everything else out of focus to bring it right out! Love it! I love taking close ups as well. I bought myself a macro extension tube a while back and it's great for insects, spiders, butterflies etc.

Some pics I took while on holiday, the first is a sunrise in Gran Canaria, and the 2 others are Malta, sunset, and the bell tower memorial, and the one in my previous post is a Portuguese sunset.

Thanks HH. I was in the county that my mum was brought up in, County Wicklow. I knew Kilcoole wasn’t too far away, although had no idea which way from where I was it would have been. My Nan always loved Holly at Christmas especially with the berries so thought I’d try to get a nice pic of the holly including berries with ireland in the background. So there was a bit of logic behind it and I’m glad it came out quite well
