"The 2030 World Cup will be held across six counties in three continents, Fifa has confirmed. Spain, Portugal and Morocco have been named as the co-hosts, with the opening three matches taking place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay".

Someone who works in the same office said to me 'I wonder why they're doing it like that'.

I said brown paper envelopes were probably the reason but then thought it would be the 100 years since the first WC, held in Uruguay, won by Uruguay with Argentina as runners up. Not sure why Paraguay as well though.

Still, doing wonders for UEFAs green credentials with air travel and stuff. And if you're one of the 6 teams playing in S.America, not exactly ideal to fly to across the Atlantic to finish the rest of your group games.

They were joint bids and have selected 2 of them. Not sure why Chile has been dropped but it was Uraguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile. There was also a joint bid from Spain, Morocco and Portugal and they have selected those two bids. Ours was also a joint bid with all 4 UK countries & Ireland so I assume it was a theme the organisers requested.

But with joint bids - you'd expect more than 3 games to be played in each country, let alone just 3 in South America before the rest of the tournament is in Southern Europe/North Africa. All very strange.

Baffling from a usually very competent organisation.

Must admit I don't get it but as FIFA are involved i am sure it's all above board.

Don’t get me wrong I’m looking forward to this more than 2028 but it’s one of the stupidest ideas I’ve ever seen. The six teams playing in those first three games are at a huge disadvantage. I guess they wanted to do something over there to mark the centenary but they couldn’t host the the whole tournament due to the low temperatures in some of the suggested host cities.

FIFA considers proposal for 64-team men's World Cup in 2030

The idea to have 64 teams compete as a one-off for the World Cup's centenary year in 2030 was put forward this week.

With this and the bullshit Super Bowl style half-time 'show' they're doing all they can to ruin it for traditional fans.

Think they should make it 128 teams but a straight knockout competition. Works out at 127 games. Then just sit back and watch England get knocked out in round 1 by Burkina Faso.

Not really fair on the other 83 member associations. Throw all 211 in, 6 group stages then knockout rounds. Start at Easter, end at Halloween.

World Cup's dead now anyway.

Just a bloated propaganda tool for the world's worst regimes.

Infantino is the useful idiot's useful idiot. And I thought I hated Blatter.

Nah... whoever the
45 top ranked teams are on 1st Jan 2030 qualify automatically and the remaining 166 teams are paired up in 83 playoffs to make the finals.

That it's nothing but a bloated parody of what it once was.

Isn't the next World Cup in USA, Canada and Mexico?
Be interesting to see the relationship between these countries by the time it comes around with what's been going on recently

It’ll make a load of shit groups and sadly spell the end of groups of death but at least this makes for proper 2 qualify groups.

I can’t stand the bloated euros and I think next World Cup where so many qualify from the groups they’re basically meaningless.

It'll be absolutely fine.

Thankfully the World Cup is not being held on Reddit!

The World Cup will be popular because there is no other football to watch at that time.

I wonder if this will be a push towards having more games in South America and possibly having it split evenly across the two areas until the semis or at a push the final and 3rd place games.

Did anyone figure out the reason why it was split across the two continents?

Montevideo, Buenos Aires and Asuncion due to it being the 100th anniversary. Africa and Europe were both due one. Also it ensured that 2034 had to be in either Asia or Oceana.

Essentially it was to make Saudi Arabia 2034 a certainty.
