A bit concerned about Murphy's ability. (2 Viewers)

As an ex-goalie myself, I tend to take notice of goalkeepers during play - how they position themselves, the way they control defenders etc - but recently, I have become concerned with the strange behaviour during play, of Murphy. In the Birmingham game, (which I watched live via a stream), he parried one shot which he could easily have kept hold of. Even the commentator said it was a "camera" save, meaning a bit of a showboat. However, the ball could have gone anywhere. As it was, it went out for a corner. Then last night (reading reports) it seems that both Palace's goals were the result of the ball being "parried out" by Murphy.
Has he got a problem with keeping hold of the ball? I think Oggy needs to get a grip with his coaching or we will be letting in far too many silly goals in future.

If he didn't have a suitable ability, he wouldn't have plaaayed for his country. Goals are conceded it happens the last thing the player need is fans on their back. 2 mistakes, we all make them.

i brought this up in another post earlier today.

The 2nd goal last night and the 3rd against Bury were both parried and then tapped in.

I'm not impressed so far.

I'm afraid that the simply truth is Joe Murphy is not a very good keeper; but then we are not a very good club at this moment in time and he is all we could afford. It seems that we are stuck with each other! :facepalm:

Both my dad and i said we spoke to Scunthorpe fans about him and they weren't very sorry to see him leave at all, some saying they were glad. Both of us got told we were being silly and fans of the club he's leaving would say that etc...
I admit that we haven't seen him play yet (i work weekends -_-), but from what i've heard, sounds like they were fully justified to be glad he isn't there anymore. Still, hopefully oggy can sort him and the other lad out .

2nd goal last night was his fault. the first one he made an awesome save, top drawer, but the defence didnt clear properly not his fault.

Maybe it's time to give Dunn a go. I don't think Murphy is a bad keeper but so far he's made a few questionable decisions and it may eventually have an affect on the defenders in front of him.

I mean, what harm can there be in giving Dunn a go? We're already losing every game as it is, maybe Dunn will turn things around (he says being a tad optimistic).

Murphy is an average keeper at this level. I guess with some fans you don't realise what you have till it i gone, (Westwood) we took for granted Westy's ability up to the point that some fans had the cheek to suggest he was only average whilst he was here.
Murphy is not a patch on Westwood and sadly I believe Dunn will be worse.

To be fair he has not started well, but the Scunny fans (apart from the two you spoke to) wax lyrically about him.

He has been player of the season, he was in the Championship team of the season 2008/9 he won the golden glove award for most clean sheets in 2006/7 and has represented Ireland. I think that's decent enough credentials to be representing our shambles and in the current climate we're lucky to have him. Give him time to settle and preferably some strength in front of him and I'm certain we'll be rewarded.

Quite amazing how so many are ready to jump on someone so quickly. Goalkeeper errors are always magnified because there is no second chance, but we've seen him for literally no time at all. Waht next - pick on the kids too?

Our mistakes are further exposed by our inability and at the other end of the pitch and the tactical naivety on the bench.

Really don't understand why everyone is getting on Murphy's back to be honest, he is a sound enough keeper in my opinion and the very least of our worries right now.

I dont think SISU are stopping us signing players....they dont want to come and play for the ungratefull, moaning tw**s that watch us (most on this thread i would bet dont go to games!!) leave the players alone for fucks sake.....3 defeats but none were hidings, it will come be supportive.Let them settle. we have nothing else.100% the players have given, it's about time the fans gave 100%

He's not a kid, he doesn't need time. He's made mistakes that have cost us games and I have every right to jump on his back.

I don't rate him and it's up to him to make me think any different.

I'm massively disappointed in him so far, I'm starting to get worried when the ball goes near him now, havent been like that for a few years (possibly Luke steele years) and it's a massive concern. we were spoiled with Westwood and I was expecting Murphy to come in and be a steady average championship keeper. Hes below that standard, he seems to have a massive go at the defenders for little things as well (anybody else noticed that??).

From the Leicester, Brum and Palace games that I've seen, I don't have full confidence in Murphy.

He punches shots which confident keepers would catch and the 2nd goal has to be his fault.

He isn't the major weakness in the side, but it's Thorns' job as manager to evaluate him, both in matches and training to decide whether to give Dunn a tryout.

I like a squad that isn't guarenteed of their place, so I wouldn't be against Dunn getting a game or two.

Cant blame the defenders for last nights 2nd! He had 2 hands in it and it was easier to keep hold of the ball than it was to release it back into play but he managed it.

Ive never really rated him. Always seen him as a Freddy Eastwood, but in goalkeeper form. He was always Scunny's best player because of the standard of the other players around him (i think the expression is a big fish in a small pond!). Wasnt overly keen we were linked with him for so long. However as said above, he was the hest we could afford.

My original post was that I believe that Oggy should be getting to grips with Murphy. It's not about getting on players backs - FFS, do you really believe they read these forums? - If the goalkeeping coach did his job, then he would see where Murphys faults are i.e. handling of the ball instead of punching away all the time. It's simple things like this that can cost us dearly in the points tally. Why shouldn't I make a point about a piss-poor performance? We were a gnats bollock away from 3 points last night and threw it away! WHY??? Sorry, but I blame Murphy! ointlaugh:

Trouble is we've had a great keeper for 3 years and relied heavily on him due to our inability to score goals.

Murphy is a decent champ keeper and anyone who think we deserve or could attract better is deluded.

GK is the least of our worries atm, lack of goalscorers/creativity from midfield is what will take us down not our back line

I think it's a case of lack of confidence all over the park. There's a lot of players at the moment who you could say play well majority of the game and then are making stupid mistakes because they haven't got enough confidence to continue and panic.

It's only now that some are realizing how good Westwood is. I read all over the summer that he wouldnt be missed, but he clearly is.

Murphy is a decent keeper, but Westwood was something special. I have no worries over Joe, and think he is easily the best we couldve got. From all I've heard from Northampton fans i know, we do not want Dunn starting ahead of him

EXACTLY what I have been told by a lad I know with a Northampton season ticket. He claims that they weren't even offering him a new deal until we came sniffing about. Also said he was surprised that he didn't drop the fucking pen when signing!!

Hi Fellas.
In the face of mounting critisism, regarding Kieran Westwood
I posted several times before his departure, in reply to those who insisted that he was only average, and that an adequate replacement had been found in the shape of one Joe Murphy.
What we have seen since his arrival, is a vindication of my beliefs that Kieran westwood, was far from an average Keeper, he possesed watertight tenique, coupled with supreme confidence, this keeper cought the ball from crosses and corners, and did't have to flap,Punch or parry, where the ball can end up at the feet of opposition players.
I still maintain that westwood was worth a goal a game, and am sorry to say that new keeper Joe murphy, looks like he may cost us the same, I remarked on several occasions, that only Kieran Westwoods departure,would show what a good keeper he is, and have seen nothing to make me think differently.

Can't agree. I played footie for 35 years from when I was 10 till I was 45. I always believed that if the other team don't score, you can't lose - you'll at least get a draw - so in my book, the goalie and defence are the most important area of the team! Having said that, I don't mean that a team has to play defensive for the whole game, but Murphy needs to improve if we don't want to leak too many more silly goals. I DO gree that we need to step up a gear where midfield and strikers are concerned, so basically, er.... that's the whole bloody team!

OK, I think we're all agreed that Westwood was a talent and we took him for granted. However, he's gone now and we have to move on from him!
Murphy could be a good keeper for us (granted not as good as we have become used to in last few seasons) if we get behind him! I cant believe that we have played 4 games and people are hammering him already!

Man United's new keeper looked ropey as fuck last weekend on his league debut..... is he suddenly a shit keeper??
Pretty sure Schmechiel had a few problems at the start and he became one of the best keepers we've seen in this country!

Now I'm not for a moment trying to compare us to United, but surely the same applies with regards to giving players time. Goalkeeper is a specialist position and one fuck up gets punished where as if a striker misses a great chance he's more than likely going to get another chance to redeem himself.

Now..... all the people about to correct me, form a line.

it is early days, but I also have my doubts about his concentration, he is a great shot-stopper, but has been at fault for a few of the conceded goals so far.

Marcus Hannehman would have been a better option, built like a brick crap house....and he has no club.

He's not lower league tripe though, he's played in this league a lot of his career! He's a good keeper and as I couldn't be bothered to go through all the posts I have seen this this might have been mentioned but Westwood was a superior keeper to most, if not all, in this league. Having had him for 3 years people are judging Murphy against Westwood, which is understandable, but not fair. Unfortunately, probably some of the people that are saying this about Murphy now are the same ones that shouted we have a replacement keeper who is better than Westwood!

Hi Andy.
Not about to correct you, but Westwood was "The Man" straight out of the box, no "Running In" required, teqnique and ability stand out, your'e right in saying that an outfield player, can make a mistake and get away with it, whereas a keeper is under the spot light, and every mistake is highlighted, but I can't recall westwood being embarrased too many times, I just don't see murphy as an adequate replacement, I don't remember there being a que for his signature, if he proves me wrong i'll retract.
