He will be missed as he had some great stories from the past. It frees a space up at sky and it will be interesting to see who they fill it with?

Hopefully if they go ex coach it will be Silverwood as it would mean he isn’t the current one. Longer term it will be Stuart Broad.

Woakes dropped again, with Bairstow in they should have kept woakes and binned off Buttler.

Cue a Buttler ton probably

Woakes has a bowling average of 63 in overseas games. He’s never suited to these conditions. I did think Bairstow would be in for Buttler - I guess his resistance in the last innings earned him one last chance

England lose toss and the Aussies put them straight in, just waiting for root to say we would have batted

I’m stunned Root would have bowled

I'm not sure Hameed could open a tin of beans, let alone a batting order. Trouble is, nobody else can either!

I am pretty sure they will be going back to Sibley in the summer, this was a good series to be left out of.

This is why people were wrong to have sympathy for other sides playing shit against us in the past.

I'm still sticking to the old chestnut that nothing about current ECB cricket strategy or schedule or philosophy is capable of producing top quality Test players. Got white ball players to spare but red ball cupboard empty.

They've just been given the OK to travel to the ground. Must have had negative test results back. Looks like another long day of suffering at the hands of Australia...

Typical. Wake up to see how much Australia are ahead, realise it's actually not that much. "hang on!" I thought to myself. "We could have a chance here!"

Then I see the England score. No chance at all. We really are so pathetically crap....

What you’re seeing is a group that has no belief in their ability, just like so many touring England sides before them.

Also think it's a side that mentally can't cope with aggressive opponents or playing conditions that don't favour them and it's been this way a while in red ball cricket.
I know it's a bit chalk and cheese but Morgan would be pushing/laying into his players and you rarely see the white ball side show such mental frailties hence their successes

Is it time perhaps for a proper division of the set ups for each format?

It’s partly lack of preparation aa tours now are so condensed and a lot of sides are poor away from home

When was the last time Crawley even batted? It’s his first game in Australia opening in a test match. Never going to work.

We haven’t regained the ashes since Illingworth was captain in Australia and before that the last one was Douglas Jardine!

We have won series there since Illingworth’s time though. Strauss’ all conquering side of 2010/11 for one.

The current England set up reminds me a bit of Sunday cricket with everyone having a go at opening, the rest deciding the order and no worries if you’re out quick. Well I say that, my Sunday captain gets angrier than Joe Root

Very few of these batsmen have played in Australia. No real warm up games - previously teams would play a round of matches against proper sides to acclimatise - it’s an almost impossible ask and a very predictable outcome.

I’d have stuck with Burns as at least he has some guts and got Malan to open - he does in reality anyway but we don’t have great openers. We should have offered Cook a wedge of cash to get out there one last time

Would you accept such an offer in Cook’s position? I wouldn’t.

All this is really just window dressing around a red ball system that just isn’t fit for the age it finds itself in. Simply put not enough English players really care about this format to seriously pursue it over the bigger money and stupid kits of white ball. Rather than Cook I’d be looking to use cash to offer some better incentives

We were the third best team in the last test league and would have been in the final had we won in India

And of course they care.

Root, stokes Bairstow are test players. Pope is more of a 5 day specialist as is Crawley but he’s struggling .

The bowlers are test bowlers. Buttler dug in for hours in the last test but is out of form. The reality is we just haven’t found a quality opening partnership or a real number 3 at all and we are always then on the slide.

You’re talking about a handful of players rather than the system that’s supposed to be producing them

This isn’t a comment on ECB elitism-the County Championship and red ball setup have clearly been neglected in favour of ridiculous competitions like the Hundred

Not really. Like it or not the one day format pays for counties to exist. Without that cricket would die - one day cricket in reality is more important and props up the long version which certainly here is not as popular.

T20 has saved cricket

It’s possible for both to coexist without us basically writing off one of the formats. The Hundred was embarrassing.

There‘s ODI and there’s the race to the bottom to have shorter games to pander to an audience that really isn’t that interested in cricket

All formats exist in each of the successful top nations so that cannot be used as an excuse, what can be, is too much test cricket squeezed into a smaller timetable with so many other competitions now and virtually every away test side just rocking up before the first test and expecting to win.
away teams don’t win many series, pitches play a big part but 3/4 proper warm up games could make it more interesting but with BBL, the Aussies don’t offer the games now so not possible

We chose to condense that calendar further still with a competition with stupid kits and team names.
