if we are in championship wasps would want us around as we advertise ricoh more than they do as football much bigger than rugby
rugby premier is same as league 1
championship and prem footy far exceed highest point of club rugby
All products (or things treated as such) operated within a fairly standard business model has a life cycle. Football has been over exposed & milked. I hear in some parts that kids league teams are stuggling to get enough players. They have lost interest...20yrs time football as a business will have probably eaten itself. IMO the greedy will move onto something else & the game will begin to thrive again at grassroots level (pardon the pun!) & the fun & interest will reignite.Wasps on TV once or twice a month normally, so even in the Championship they would get more tv air time. Plus this weekend for the champions cup game v Zebre they are on tv in UK, France and via the worlds biggest sporting franchise beIN Sports Arabic so air time in the massive arabic market.
Don't like it but Rugby (both the Aviva Premiership, Guinness PRO12 and the Champions Cup) are now getting bigger and bigger tv coverage, UK wise and worldwide.
In terms of football
Championship, although more games are now shown in the UK have lost many countries TV audiences due to raising the price and them now saying no more. SportDigital.TV Germany, beIN Sports France, Sportmania Spain etc... now shows less games, in the case of Spain now none.
As for the Premier League more and more countries like Germany (Sky Sport Germany, Canal+ Sport France etc have not renewed contracts this season and countries like Spain have greatly reduced the amount of games shown). More and more of these countries are going PPV for Premier League games via online streams (France and Germany are now showing more and more of there own countries games and putting the money into there own game).
Looking at the games now televised abroad by country and the amount of games now being picked up compared to previous seasons the buble could well be set to burst.
Rugby Union on the other hand is now being shown in more and more countrys, ok for less money but the Ricoh may now get more global coverage from Rugby Union than footy. TV companys are slowly turning there backs on the figures UK footy wants.
The last time this was discussed I dug out some ratings. Over the course of the season we had a total viewership higher than Wasps and that's with us in L1.Wasps on TV once or twice a month normally, so even in the Championship they would get more tv air time.
Wasps are getting more coverage than in previous seasons and i'm also commenting on tv coverage abroad. A big part of my job is tv coverage and letting clients know channels showing sports. Last couple of years it was normally just Sky but this season more countries have jumped on to Rugby Union and less countries for Championship FottyThe last time this was discussed I dug out some ratings. More and more ex pats living in Arabic states now, more tourists there than ever and believe it or not the Arabs are getting into all UK Sports. Like i said before beIN Sports Arabic (17 Sports channels plus online channels to) had to buy out OSN Sports as they wanted to show even more. They don't do this for a loss. They may well get massive air time in the arabic market, but will anyone be watching? Rugby is not a traditional Arabic sport, so whether the market is massive it doesn't really matter if few are interested, and I say this as a Rugby fan. (Not of Wasps though)

Yeah, some great examples of that. The international cricket games played there the stadiums are virtually empty, the UCI cycling World Championships are currently in Qatar - there's been literally no spectators.Fair points Pipkin, but I still cant see a huge take up in interest by the local population in rugby, whichever team it is. There might be expats who want to watch it, but lets face it that's not new fans attracted to the sport. Rugby is and will always be a more minority sport.
It was and to a degree is, but it is growing and FAST. Take the 6 nations, bars out here get more people watching that than the footy.Fair points Pipkin, but I still cant see a huge take up in interest by the local population in rugby, whichever team it is. So what are the viewing figures? And how many Arabic advertisers or sponsors have Wasps got?More and more ex pats living in Arabic states now, more tourists there than ever and believe it or not the Arabs are getting into all UK Sports. I know the people who run Molly's and have been there many times. It's nothing to do with rugby getting more popular, Ciaran is a big rugby fan. Being a Dubliner he supports Leinster. It was and to a degree is, but it is growing and FAST. Take the 6 nations, bars out here get more people watching that than the footy.
Thing is that people can watch football almost 24/7 but not Rugby Union. So when games come on lot's are now watching the Union as the footy is just another live game out of 1000.
I will include an example poster of a bar out here.
Leinster V Castres instead of showing Man City V Everton or Arsenal V Swansea or Celtic V Motherwell (and an Irish Bar)
Connacht V Toulouse, instead of Villa V Wolves or Palace V West Ham.
Same for Sunday.
So Irish Rugby Union instead of Football.
That is just one example. This is a tourist resort, the bars show what people are asking for. It might be a minority sport but it's starting to give football a bloody good kicking.
It's about advertising the brand Ricoh not how many sponsors they have.So what are the viewing figures? And how many Arabic advertisers or sponsors have Wasps got?
chiefdave they sure have not got any less than us
They do Nick, just a shame that League 1 games are very rarely shown.Don't our sponsors have estate agencies in dubai and arabic countries?
I'm impressed that how Ricoh knew 11 years ago Wasps would be moving here and the popularity of rugby in the Middle East would increase. It's about advertising the brand Ricoh not how many sponsors they have.
