Any heating experts? (1 Viewer)

One of my radiators won't warm up. It's not even getting warm at the bottom.

I've bled everywhere, re pressured.

The valve is set to 5.

Any ideas?

Rich man can afford to put the heating on😉.

Have you checked the other side to the valve is open

Bleed all the radiators-there may be an airlock somewhere in the system. Then turn ALL the radiators off. Then turn the problem radiator on-so the entire output of the boiler is going to that one problem radiator-it should warm up. When it’s warmed up start to turn the rest of the radiators back on-start with the radiator nearest the problem one-when it’s warmed up turn on the next one …& so on & so on untitl all the radiators are on & warm. This process is known as “rebalancing” by heating engineers

The valve might be set to 5 but the pin could be stuck in it. Remove the plastic head and push the pin down with a flat screwdriver. Make sure you can pull it up and down with a pair of pliers.

I turned the others off, it has got warm so I think it needs balancing.

It's off again now, an hour was enough for this month.

Have you got enough pressure in the system? If there’s not enough pressure water might not be reaching it. Or you’ve got some radiator valves open more than they need to be causing an imbalance in the system starving the one radiator not getting warm of hot water.

If I was you I’d open all the radiator valves fully and all the thermostats fully, check the pressure at the boiler, top up as per the manual if needed, switch your heating on full, find the first radiator that gets hot (usually the one nearest to the boiler), bleed it, then turn the valve down so its only just open, then find the next radiator that’s hot, and repeat, then the next one, then the next one etc etc until you run out of radiators, check the pressure again at the boiler, top up again if necessary, then go around and set the radiator thermostats. Job done. It’s how I do it every autumn and it’s never failed me.

Cheers.

Yeah all bled and messed around with the balance from the kitchen one back. Seems better now.

It's not coming on until it's very very cold though.

Probably the last radiator on the system, might be worth turning some of the other valves back a little bit more. I crank them back until they’re almost turned off, you’ll know if you’ve gone too far because it will start cooling down so just open it a smidge more.

Glad Nick got sorted.

Had ours on for a couple of hours last week as was told to do this every couple of months to stop "sludge" building up? Does that sound right?

When i had my house in England i had the same problem as Nick, tried all the above so ended up calling in an engineer.
Real old guy turned up and knew his stuff. He said the same as you about "sludge"

He told me to turn everything on about an hour before he was due to arrive, first thing he did was disconnect one and took it outside,
shit loads of crap came out of it. He flushed it through and refitted it, worked brilliantly.

He asked if i knew how to do what he had done (to save me money) i said yes so he went away having been paid very happy to have helped.

I then repeated this on all of mine and not only did they work better my electricity bill came down.

The reason i am posting this, is with the cost of electricity at the moment, maybe you should all check and clean yours.
Like i said my electricity bill came down with the house being warmer due to the radiators working as they should.

Even if you're not having problems at the moment, it does not mean "sludge" is not starting to build up, so please check them out and hopefully you will save some money.
