Attendances ours don't look that bad. (1 Viewer)

Funny how after people moaning on here I have been looking at the attendances for our league and the championship.

We are 5th in our league having played 2 of those games at sixfields so could have been 2nd if all games had been at the Ricoh playing in front of 10,000 fans

There are also 5 teams in the championship with a worse attendance then us, again with playing all the games at the Ricoh we would have moved up the table 7 places.

So do these figures mean that we are poorly supported or that all leagues bar the premiership are struggling to attract enough customers?

The percentage of fans to ground size is,
67.1 % in the Championship
and 42.2 in league 1

So are we really the only Club with Shit Fans as some on here would make out on here or is there some kind of trend?

Could we have been first if we had played at the Ricoh in front of 27,000 each game? Apparently we are heading for 20k plus again already for the next home game.
Has the combination of our absence from Coventry and Pressley's new young team been the catalyst to end the apathy among Coventry supporters?
Will it really drop to 10k again? Something tells me we will average much higher this term, perhaps averaging 15 to 18k each home game. People have come to realise what they have missed and are more willing and less apathetic in my opinion. Time will tell...

19,064 Sheff united after 2 games are top.

Not sure about 20,00 per game thou? from what I am reading on here people are expecting about 10,000 for the next game.

Attendances fluctuate, always have always will. We averaged 34,000 before, hit 20K regularly and very occasionally it has dipped below 11000 - like now. So in other words, our levels of support at the moment are not 'normal', they are historically very low. They will improve again in time. Not sure why people are getting so uptight about it.

Statistically completely flawed logic . You can't take the first Ricoh game and a couple of Sixfields ones as any sort of a true average.
Let's see at Xmas for a true read. Suspect we will still be 2nd. But then we should be shouldn't we?

Why should we be?

Sheff Utd 19,034 average
Bradford 13,589
Preston 11,864
Coventry 10,564

Yes we had two very low attendances but we also had a very high one. And we have those having a go at their fellow supporters because they think we will only get about 10k a game. So if they are right our average attendance so far is close.

Bradford have 8500 season ticket holders, we have 4000 (for obvious reasons), so very much doubt we will overtake them this season - unless we get into the top 6 and stay there until the end, then we might see some big gates.

Depends on whether you're calculating the mean or median average.....we also average only 2,376......so anything over 3k will be a bonus.

Andreas, I am a bit confused as to why you first state that you feel the stats are flawed, as essentially you are arguing the same point as letsallsingtogether does, which is that we will be one of the best attended teams in the league, which shows that actually our fans are not that bad after all.

Despite no success in the last 30 years and no top 6 for 40odd , people really think we are badly supported , below is a picture dated 31st august 2014 , showing where we are in terms of our all time average attendance .... Yes our support is awful considering ...sigh

It suggests that we have a lot of fans who moan and whine about the club but still attend. This hase been prevalent throughout my 30 odd years of supporting the club.

How do we look if we take average attendances as a percentage of population? I know there are other factors to consider including the locality of other football clubs and whether you include outlying settlements etc, but it gives a more sensible discussion point than simply showing attendances.

We damn well should be one of the biggest supported club's in League 1, isn't Coventry (a one club City don'r forget) the 9th or something biggest city in England?

If you halve the population of Sheffield as it has two teams we are second to Bradford. Bradford are cited as being a club with cheap tickets but they also have a huge population. I doubt if Rochdale charged £5 a ticket they would suddenly attract 20,000 fans.

People also seem to be forgetting that the Ricoh effect MKII should be kicking in like it did in 05/06. Look how our attendances jumped then from the season before. Haven't got them to hand but it must have been roughly 50% (14K to 21K ish).

That's why I am so disappointed with a predicted crowd of 10K tomorrow. All the (clearly made up) euphoria on Friday and then 6 days later, gone.

Pointless. City populations are meaningless if you don't take into account the size of the conurbation. You can argue all like that, say, Coventry is bigger than Nottingham - but it's bollocks. Nottingham is twice the size of Coventry in population terms. Urban area is a much better guide, and ours is smaller than that of Bournemouth. The size of our catchment area is always grossly overstated.

I've just checked the populations of urban areas and it doesn't really give you a better indication, we are 17th. Bournemouth are ahead of us but we have always had better attendances. Sunderland, Derby and Norwich are both below us and Bournemouth and have significantly better attendances.

It's not a perfect guide, but it's a better guide. We also have similar gates (historically) to all those clubs, despite the fact I'd argue that their wider catchment areas are much bigger.
