Barton Or Thomas? (1 Viewer)

So if John Fleck who is definitely our best CM is still not fit then who would you prefer to start.

Adam Barton who has been told he can find another club but has some talent and can do a job or Connor Thomas who isn't the best and is either out of form and confidence or just isn't as good as all these clubs/managers say?

I personally would go for Barton due to his height and skill, still not a great CM but just anyone than CT. I just don't see anything he brings or does that warrants starts or even at the club other being on probably cheap wages and he was a product of the academy.

Yes I would give Barton a go, he can't do any worse than Thomas so why not? Give him a run, something he's never had.

Couldn't agree more. I hope he gets a chance. I know his ship has most likely sailed but he played in pre season friendlies and did alright. He cant be any worse than CT so WHY NOT?

Conor Thomas is 20 years old and has already played nearly 100 games for the club. Has his issues and isn't wonderful on the ball, but I think he gets unnecessary stick. Still very young, one bad game doesn't make you a terrible player.

I would go with Barton. Good passer of the ball. Needs to be a bit more robust. But football is a confidence game and I think Barton needs to be tougher mentally.

I think that's the problem Paddy, you make a fair point but I haven't seen many good games in those 90 odd games if any. I just don't see it.

I think he gives 100% and he is committed but serious lack of quality for mine.

This thread already highlights why I'm amazed we aren't still looking for an old head in the centre of the park. I still wouldn't be surprised to see us back in for Diagouraga before the transfer window shuts.

always wanted it to work out for barton, he looked so promising when he came, but it just has'nt. the same for conner , it just not working for him, or maybe they have both none there best and have to settle for a mediocre life in football.

Like I said not the best on the ball but certainly time to learn, doesn't help him playing alongside Fleck who is one of the most technically gifted footballers in the division. Prepared to give him a chance this season, think a 3 man midfield should suit us a lot more once we're all used to it.

Understand Thomas is young but Barton is only 23 and deserves a chance. Thomas has too many games where he offers absolute nothing to the team. The Bradford game we might as well not have played with a midfield

Barton was a rock at Bristol City when we beat them 2-1 in Feb this year. Can offer a lot if given the chance.

I'm gonna stick up for RFC here - Barton has been told he can find another club, and not been given a squad number. I'm not sure what RFC has said wrong in his post.

So had Jordan Clarke.

Didn't SP say that in January, but since then has impressed SP? Apologies if wrong, but I thought AB had gone from bomb squad to fringe player?

I'm sure SP said it again this preseason, he can leave if he can find another club. He wasn't given a squad number either.

Then I stand corrected if true. Can't a squad number be issued any time though?

Personally I don't think we are in the position to be leaving out players that can do a job IMO.

Yes he said it again in the summer, and re: Jordan Clarke, he was called back from the bomb squad after about 2 days, was given a squad number and started the first game of last season.

I agree we shouldn't be freezing players out, although I'm not convince Barton is the answer, he may well have biased Bristol last season, but we've also seen some horrendous performances (Walsall 4-0 14 months ago) and given that neither Robins nor Pressley seem to rate him, there must be something lacking.

But was still called back. SP can easily call back AB.

Although I'd rather Fleck was fit and playing.

Of course he can be recalled, the only way I can see him being recalled is if he's still here when the window is closes. Saying that Billy Daniels is probably above him in the pecking order as he was last season.

What we really need is someone with a bit of experience and brawn.

Is Daniels injured/on loan?

This seems to have gone away from topic, more about AB's squad status.

Personally, I think Thomas should be dropped for a while, hopefully gets him playing well when he come on again.

Daniels was on the bench on Saturday I think.

I do think we need a Thomas-type player in the team. If we go with some combination of Barton, Fleck, Swanson, Daniels in there I think we'd get over-run. Thomas brings physical presence. I think we need another option (Diagouraga would be absolutely ideal) in that mould because Thomas isn't good enough to be first on the teamsheet every game. I do like him though and I'd start him over Barton

I agree with Sutty if playing 5-3-2 or 3-5-2 with O'Brien and Swanson as the other two then I think we have to go with Thomas as he is the nearest to a holding midfielder we have in our squad. Otherwise a midfield three of Swanson, O'Brien and Barton would be dominated and overrun when it come to fight balls. tackles, headers, interceptions etc...etc....

We do really need another holding midfielder to at least pressurise Thomas......I think we have to stick with him at present....think Barton could only come in if we play 4-4-2 and that probably would still involve Thomas as the other centre mid.......4-4-2 with Fleck and Thomas in centre and Swanson and O'Brien on wings works better for me....I would line up like this tomorrow.

I would like to see Barton get a go and Pressley say to him "Here is ten games show me what you can do and why you deserve to be here" I like Conor but he has struggled since the tail end of last season.

I wouldn't write Thomas off just yet. But he needs some competition, to help him. Give him a rest, get him out the spotlight.

We need another DM in the squad.

I think its quite simple to solve our midfield problems. From what i saw at Bradford johnson likes to get forward and defending doesnt seem to be his strong point so id stick him in the centre of the park and play fleck in a playmaker role. I firmly believe we should build our side around john Fleck but he needs a battler in there with him to allow him to be influential

Barton has no future at the club. No manager here has rated him and when he went to fleetwood couldn't get a game. So RFC agreed with all the managers Barton played for - no one who sees him on a daily basis rates him.

Fleck and Barton have both shown the ability to be creative. Perhaps both need shown the desire and consistency to become first class players.

What both lack is perhaps the right foil alongside them, to allow them to kick on their progress.

From the sounds of it, Thomas needs a rest. This is the nature of young players, imho, they seem to go through crests and troughs in form. Given the resources we've got, we're going to have to accept that as fans, I think.

As for Barton and Baker, if we're paying them, then we should be prepared to play them. Honest question, does any other team at our level operate this 'bomb squad' policy where you don't even give contracted professionals a squad number?

I hate it personally, it just seems spiteful and pointless, but has it become accepted practice?

Westley I believe definitely did it at Preston and I'm sure he's not alone.
