I need to get this off my chest. I watch most home games and usually have my earphones in to listen to the BBC commentary. They were going on about how good Barton is or what a good game he has had. Am I missing something? I think he is shit! He has appalling distribution skills, always seems to give the ball away in vital areas and if he does find a blue shirt, someone is usually on the player and they have nowhere to go and lacks skill. Am I being harsh here? I think he is one of the worst players I have ever seen in a sky blue shirt.

He isn't the greatest but I thought on Saturday he was having a half decent game. He dropped some "unbelievable tekkers" to skin a donny player! If that didn't open a black hole to swallow up all of mankind nothing will.

As I and others have said on other threads, on the ball he played quite well, but off it he was shocking. I was convinced he was taken off for tactical reasons, because he was nothing short of a liability when he didn't have the ball, but TM says he had a knock, so we will go with that I think.

Well I suppose its the same as what we said about Burge - he was having a good game, but only by his standards. I thought O'Brien would have been 1st off after nearly getting sent off.

Me too. Had it been Fleck or Barton or Samuel I wouldn't have been as concerned, but as party of JOB's games is all about harrying and chasing down opposition players and nipping at their ankles, I thought it would be very wise to remove him from the fray.

He holds the ball well and I suspect his poor passing is more the positional skills of the players in front of him.
Little lightweight in tackles but does track back.
In a better team he would shine.

To be honest the game changed when he came off.
Difficult to correlate whether it was him or not.

Track back? Occasionally he does, yes. Donny's great one chance in the first half was down to him.

Yet It was the midfield that failed second half
Yes the goals came from defensive errors but It was wave upon wave
He was taking some awful bolux off a couple behind me after being involved in a great little move down the left breaking down
I guess we just must have someone to hate

still seems odd that people have a go at him even though Fleck was absolutely awful the whole match, much worse than Barton.

Not saying he's good, but there are worse than him who get regular games.

People are talking about Barton though today because it was he who was taken off.

Think pretty much everyone agrees that Fleck was poor as well.

I don't mind Barton. OK, so he's a bit of a leg dangler, but he still passes the ball brilliantly on occasions. I'd certainly rather have him in the line-up than Thomas or Finch who offer zero to the team.

You see this is where is fans in the main only see work when a player is in possession. I would say when on form, Thomas offers a lot to the team - he has a decent range of passing, albeit not the most inventive on the ball, but off it he has high work rate, he presses high, he good as winnings second balls, he actually moves off the ball. He just doesn't look as elegant on the ball for want of a better phrase. That said he has struggled for form this season.

You could be right, Stu. Maybe I concentrate to much on what he does when he has the ball which generally means he passes it straight to the opposition.

I would say his general pass completion rate is as high if not higher than fleck and Bartons and JOBs but fans seem to notice the ones he gives away a lot more than the others. The gillingham game was a case in point, where he was excellent for the first 60 minutes, then gave way the ball 2-3 times in a couple of minutes - fans then just focused on that pattern of player rather than the other 60 mins.

Barton is a fairy simple, we need someone with grit and determination, I am sure this will be addressed in summer should we stay up.

Yes Wingy we most have someone to whinge about, it's a CCFC tradition deserved or not.

My opinion on Barton is that bit by bit he has improved since being released of his shackles by TM and now plays a more attacking role with license to go forward.
Weaknesses include not using his height to full advantage in heading situations and at times giving the ball away needlessly a common fault with most of the CCFC squad I may add.

Ball control is good and can turn with the ball at feet leaving the opposition wrong footed at times. He does track back when needs be and is clearly a more rounded player with room to improve within this new role.

I believe he does have something to offer given time.

I find myself in complete agreement with otis. Loved his showboating on the half way line but his inability to read the game and offer protection to Willis defensively was so frustrating

In a decent team he would do well. What I mean by that is a team that plays with wingers so he can spray a pass out wide or a team with two strikers that are constantly making runs. He's a clever footballer with good vision but the rest of the team don't use him properly. Think he'd be good sitting in the middle with one or two by him doing all the running. Leaving him to just knock if around the pitch. Way to casual about everything though

Has played alot of football in recent months, something not many would have expected. But I think this shown on Saturday as he looked very lethargic and at times almost had the expression of 'oh not again'. Probably is time he had a rest

Fleck and Barton do not really have enough about them in their all round game to really make a difference week in week out,,, every now and then you see a player and think about how good they can be.. The problem both have is they dont produce enough all the time they produce little on any given day,, it is a shame because both will work hard but just dont have it...

Thomas and OB are different players mobile and will put a foot in,, problem is they do not have enough about them with the ball to effect or control games...So 4 players that you would think picking 2 would give balance in a center midfield, but in reality none of them are good enough and will eventually bring the team down to another level.. The kid form spurs has shown more about him in 3 games than the rest the whole season,, why,, he has more about him and will play aswell as get around the field different level and a player that will be in the championship next year...

Barton has linked the midfield to the attack more often than not since Mowbray took charge. They couldn't handle him on Saturday as he was just running across the midfield bringing others (both midfiled and forwards) into play. As soon as he went off we looked very disjointed because of the lack of link up play. Really didn't help that Odelusi had a stinker when he replaced him too though.

TM pulled Barton over to him and told him to mark there bloody Right back (22) to stop him shafting Stokes all the time which he did for about 5 minutes and then pissed off back to central midfield. TM had to shove Nouble back to do the job.

Barton has lots of skill and did one amazing spin as I recall in the first half . Trouble is 99% of the time the ball is still where it started, he cannot penetrate or cut in and deliver . There is nothing tangible to hang this talent on. It gets the team nowhere and it's all a bit "watch what I can do everybody"

What decent team would want Barton?

He is terrible and that is why he is here. Suspect he will drift out the professional game in the summer.

Looks nice on the ball at times but without it makes us lightweight. He needs to toughen up and work on his lack of tackling and pressing ability maybe then he would be a real asset to the first team. Bench for now.
