He's not ready to lead the line as a sole striker.

There's plenty of raw ability, but he's got to be paired up with Simms or as an impact sub.

He did okay. He’s young. No he’s not the ‘next Tavares’. He’ll have a good career.

Lots of people whinging “he’s over rated” etc are simply wrong. He’s obviously impressing in training - professionals and people with eyes can see he is good.

All being said, Simms has to start the next game.

Simms put himself about well, hassled the defence and won headers. Would have had Simms on first half personally, when we were actively trying to put crosses. Then bring on Norm to harass tired legs for 30.

He'll be a top player but feel like he needs a bit of time and some strength work. Still only a kid.

Also we all know Simms is a confidence player, just give him a run and stop chopping and changing

I agree that would have worked better today due to the number of crosses in to the box in the first half. Not taking away from Bassettes ability, but Simms being a unit and a decent first time finisher would have been better to start today.

20 years old. He's v good. Doesn't have to start every game but the takeaway is we have a v good player on our hands.

Maybe people don't want to admit that cos they wanna believe recruitment is terrible.

He's very raw but he doesn't give the centre backs a minute's peace which helps create space for others. His pace got him the penalty today.

People on here love being contrary as slagging off players than the ‘plebs’ like. Seen it a bit with Sakamoto too recently.

For a young striker coming over from the continent, who is playing a lot more than he should be, he’s doing fine. Wouldn’t be my first choice striker but it’s not like anyone else has deserved the shirt this season.

Good prospect. Happy to have him. He adds something different as well compared to what we have. Not good expecting him to be the finished article at 20.

I think the next thing Lampard can do for us is get Simms firing again. I know some of you will say he only scored against shit teams last year but there’s plenty of them to score against again this year. Give him a run of games.

Thought he played well. Still not every time a ball went long to him they were scared of him. Need to stay onside though.

Great work for the penalty and loved the Gyokeres still turn to win a foul.

Good young player imo. Puts his all in, won a pen, quite clearly going to improve significantly and then of course everyone will be wanking him off.

I agree, however the title of the thread is misleading.

He’d benefit with a strike partner, and it may be worth him and Haji teaming up when the latter is back. Simms, imo, isn’t the answer.

If he can tackle, mark and pass, he’d make an excellent CM shithouser like Dennis Wise was. lol

Today was screaming out for Simms to start. We got the ball wide and into the box so many times. If we’re dominating possession with patient build up it doesn’t suit Bassette, he’s good on the counter on the shoulder of the last man.

Presents us a good option if we’re playing away and less dominant in possession or a good option off the bench when the game is stretched.

As a midfielder he’d be difficult to play with because his movement is very erratic (definitely age related).

It’s horses for courses and he was better in the 2nd half today when the game was stretched.

Guys I know we all like a bit of Norm’s dark arts, but there is no way he’s reinventing himself as a Championship midfielder at 20 years of age

Why do we have to look for a different target to aim at every time the last one shows they are better than made out to be?

Advice from the touchline sub's got the goalkeeper off with the save, did anyone see his reaction when they missed a chance threw himself to the floor like a child up near the HW line?

He’s young and hungry with tonnes to learn but shouldn’t be anywhere near leading the line for us and it shows where we are at with strikers at the club. A firing Simms or BTA for example, and Bassette plays cameos. We need to persist with Simms and get him firing or put Wright up there when he’s back and leave EMC on the left.

I think Lampard is sending a message to Simms.
Given his performance when he came on its hopefully message received, (until his next all nighters on his PS5)

Kid has a future for sure but it is very odd that a guy with basically no goal scoring pedigree and who has been pretty ineffective so far this season (if we are honest) is starting over our and west broms top goalscorers from last season. Either he is immense in training... or Simms really isn't...

When he joined us as a 19 year old, unheard of striker, everyone said who???? And "wtf do we need another striker for" etc etc
Everyone expected him to be a u21 development player.

Fast forward 4 months, and he's leading the line as first choice striker ahead of Simms and BTA, and winning us a pen.
AND got his first international cap to boot!

That's an amazing achievement for a young lad in less than 4 months.
Is he the finished article? Of course not, but give the lad some much deserved credit.

also, and i don’t quite know how to articulate it properly, but he’s obviously a massive fan of running in behind you can tell by the way he is pointing to where he wants it and screaming for it but either a) our midfielders aren’t capable of pulling off the through balls he’s looking for or b) they’re too nervous about getting pelters if they try it and it doesn’t pull it off or c) maybe this isn’t appropriate for a lone striker and he’d be better off in a two

1 goal in 11 or 12 games…

I don’t get the love in he gets because the same set of fans love to have a go at BTA and Simms. Both players have more goals and not had a good run of starts as he has.

It’s an exciting project though.

That’s my thinking behind it too. Simms start his run of form last season after wrestling with Godden for it. It’s a similar battle this season it seems.

Looking at the run of games, I want Simms up there because we could get him a few goals and kick start a run.

Off the ball, Bassette gives defenders a lot of grief but on the ball he struggles a little bit. Few heavy touches and outmuscled by defenders a bit and I don’t back him to win a header. In the first half, I felt that the crosses we put in the box called for Wright and Simms.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I reckon Simms would've got one maybe two today .The way we were playing suits him more than Norm in my opinion

100% because we’re actually making efforts to cross earlier at the byline.

How many times under MR and Carr did we get to the byline not cross it? Too often a phase of play would look something like this:
We get to a crossing position and the would-be crosser passes it back to another player, maybe another 1-2 back and forth passes before recycling back to midfield to then shift it to the opposite wing and repeat until we lose the ball. In the meantime, the opposition just sits in a defensive shape and have 3-4 players dealing with one striker in the box.

Compare that with both goals yesterday, the ball was whipped in quicker and before defenders could pick up our attackers in the box. Rudoni arrived late and in space. The same thing happened v WBA but Torp missed an easy header.
