David Beckham will be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards tomorrow.

The broadcaster revealed that the award will recognise Beckham's "huge contribution to football" over the 18 years he has played since making his first-team debut for Manchester United at 17 in 1992.

Beckham has won 115 international caps - an all-time record for an English outfield player - and amassed over 450 appearances in his senior career. He also remains the only English player to score in three consecutive World Cup finals.

Having twice been a runner-up in the Fifa World Player of the Year award, the father-of-three was previously named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2001.

Previous winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award include last year's recipient Seve Ballesteros, Sir Bobby Charlton in 2008 and Beckham's former manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2001.

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards will be broadcast on Sunday at 7pm.

Beckham tipped for New Year knighthood

Buckingham Palace is reportedly 'under pressure' to honour David Beckham with a knighthood in the New Year Honours List.

The footballer, who won the Lifetime Achievement award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards over the weekend, received an OBE in 2003. The Daily Star reports that bookies have now cut the odds on Beckham being honoured.

"We'll be crying bigger tears than Beckham did in Birmingham when he is knighted," a spokesman for Ladbrokes said. "It's starting to look a certainty, and the only question now is when."

Prince William appeared in a VT to praise the 35-year-old as he received his award at the BBC ceremony on Sunday.

"His contribution to football is exceptional," he said. "He is an example to young footballers of how to play the game with skill, integrity and determination."

Simon Cowell is also among those tipped to make the list when it is announced on December 31.
