I don't recollect seeing beggars in the streets in UK before the late 70's. What was it like in 40's & 50's or before WWII?

Hardly surprising. No one should be homeless in 2016, yet the problem is getting bigger and bigger.

It doesn't help that the majority couldn't care less and only care about themselves and their own boring, irrelevant lives.

Some of those comments by readers are disgusting, let's hope none of them or their families fall on hard times.

I probably buy a couple of sandwiches most days for the homeless. Considering doing it myself for a couple of weeks to raise a bit of money for charity.

I do give most of the time or buy Big Issue occasionally.
But I don't see them everyday through work location etc.
But I just don't find them offensive in any way
If I didn't want to I would simply walk on by.

I don't tend to give to people on the street, never know where the money is going or if they are actually homeless.

I used to give money, but a Scottish man wanted more then the pound that I gave him!

Me and a mate went to see City play Walsall last season. We made a day of it and went to town at night. From walking from the station to outside the Casino on Spon street there must have been at least 8 beggars.

I speak to homeless people daily at work, there is a hostel at the salvation army known as the rough sleepers unit. Jesus Army does stuff for the homeless also. Once the rough sleepers is full your on your own i'm afraid.

jail the people that are less fortunate but let the travellers turn up anywhere cause thousands of pounds of damage leavde tons of litter and intimate people to part cash for poor workmanship and the police not say a word to them accept sorry civil matter

It's so hard isn't it - I trust what my friends who I respect who are good policemen and women who tell me that it never helps the situation to give money. Food and genuine love and help but never money - Other good friends will always give money as they figure they need their money more than them.

Bloody disgrace that we don't help in situations like this - we just pass the problems on at much greater cost - police / courts / prison!

Doubt he'd have got these restraining orders if he was genuinely destitute & needy. Some people get taken in too easily.

I saw a beggar in Peterborough the other night and bizarrely in my head I chucked him a few quid thinking that would help city win if I did a good thing.

I remember thinking afterwards that despite the good it would do him, I shouldn't have been so generous, but on reflection I think it's me who needs help, I'm clearly beyond being rational !!

Nope, was a guy on the corner with a beard. I also said "sorry mate got no change" and he said no problem, have a good evening, thanks for communicating with him as so many just walk by. I thought such a nice thing to say when I was already walking past and felt bad for those that didn't even acknowledge him. I turned back and chucked him a note - as I say in my head I thought it would somehow help city because I'm not the full shilling! but also he seemed genuine and I thought in need as opposed to just fuelling a drug habit. I could have been wrong, so if he duped me fair play, but would like to think if I needed it or someone I know, that others might respond in a similar way.
