99% of you won't remember him, but Bert recently passed away aged 89 years. He was one of the world's best goalkeepers. I was there at Wembley when he broke his neck and carriend on playing (1956 Cup Final, Man City v B'ham City). He came from the same era as my hero Reg Matthews who was Coventry City's goal keeper and the first Div 3 goalkeeper ever to play for England). RIP Bert.

I think more people would be aware of him than not, the broken neck story is part of football folklore.

A relative of a colleague of mine had a bit of a "frisky time" with Bert a few years ago. He was quite the ladies man it seems!
