A million was alot of money back then. To put it in prepestive, Alan Shearer moved to Blackburn the same season for a record transfer fee of 3.3 million.
For me, valve for money wise I would stick Dublin in the top five. But number one choice would be Bergkamp, was a genius with a ball at his feet, such a clever footballer, wasn't blessed with lightning pace but he didn't need it, cost a fair bit but he gave Arsenal a good 10 years.
I thought he cost £2m but not certain and that was form ManU reserves after a broken leg. Looked a massive gamble to me at the time, but soon realised his worth.
Biggest bargain imo was Schmeichel to Man Utd for about £0.5m, although that shows how shrewd they were since just looking at this thread means that they got change out of a reserve player in exchange for Cantona and Schmeichel - not a bad bit of business
Thierry Henry at 11 million. Back in his Arsenal days he was one of the best players in the world and certainly one of the greatest players to grace the premiership.
Also Ronaldo to UTD for 12 million for obvious reasons.
The best player of the Premiership years is without doubt Dennis Bergkamp.
Value for money? You'd have to go some to beat Patrick Viera. Signed for £3.5mill, they had the best 8 or 9 years of his career, and still sold him for around £12mill I think? He was the only midfielder to regularly come out on top in battles with Roy Keane.
