Best defence since? (2 Viewers)

An incredible defensive record so far this season, albeit in the fourth division.

Which are the best Sky Blues defensive line-ups people can remember? A few which stand out in my mind would be:

- Glazier, Smith, Blockley, Barry or Parker, Cattlin

- Blyth, Thomas, Dyson, Gillespie, Roberts

- Ogrizovic, Borrows, Kilcline, Peake, Downs

Showing my age I guess, but I haven’t had much confidence in our defence for a very long time.

Random defensive picks, you have to say Breen, Nillson, Fox, Dann, Keogh, Konjic we're all great, just not at the same time as anyone else !

Edit - and to say this defence doesn't stand up to defences of the past is harsh. They can only cope with what's in front of them, regardless of division I haven't been this sure of a defensive in many years

Great defensive record but is it the defence or the 2 holding midfielders who are responsible for the great record. Yes they are one unit but I think we have a a league 1 defensive midfield and a solid league 2 defense. So my vote is for the best defensive midfielders rather than best defenders.

It IS a different league, but so too are the teams we're playing against. Stats will probably prove me wrong, but I can't personally remember being so tight at the back since we won something of significance - perhaps a sign of us having a good season, finally.

I reckon me and the next 2 people I see would offer more of an attacking game threat than Barnet today!

Yes for the level we are it it's great it's solid but to compare to teams and players from years gone by is a joke!

So we’re in a crap league, there’s not much pace, the shooting’s rubbish and people can’t cross a ball. But we’ve only conceded 6 in 12 games, which is a rare cause for optimism in these bleak years. If the defence can keep that up it gives us the platform for promotion, and I’d take that whichever way we can achieve it.

The current team wouldn’t live with those in years gone by, we all know that and nobody’s comparing Chris Stokes to Trevor Peake. But leaving that aside, what’s the best defence we ever had? And how about the best since we dropped out of the Prem – Westwood, Wright, Dann, Turner & Fox?

Since dropping out the Prem in a Cov shirt pound for pound on those rare occasions he played I'd say David Mcnamee is the best right back we've had.... Keogh, Wright and Christie included.

Did Nilsson not play when we went down? If so, David Mcnamee better than Nilsson?

The last group are probably the best defence we’ve had in my time supporting the club. Although our defence have done well, Barnet played for a draw today, and didn’t offer much of a threat today. Other posters are right to point to the defensive nature of the team, with holding midfielders adept at shielding the defence. The lack of goals is a concern, a lucky bounce for them and we
would have lost today.

Any statto's on here know what the record number of clean sheets are in div 2 (old div 4) for a season. Providing we can keep the same defence and the midfield 2 together for most of this season I think we will have a chance

Don't get me wrong, the defence is good, but a large part of why we have so many clean sheets is down to how shit the teams are going forward in this league.

The quality at this level is very poor, way below that of League 1 for me.

If a large part of why we have so many clean sheets is because teams are shit at going forwards, then why haven't lots of other teams also had lots of clean sheets?

I would say a large part of why we have so many clean sheets IS because we have such a good defence.

If ( and the next few games look tricky) we can stay solid at the back, we will always have a chance in every game. Luton look strong (in attack) but the rest of the teams look as though they are not that special (wasn't expecting Notts County to slip up against Forest Green). Soild should get us promotion, and if our forwards can pick it up (if not, intoduce Mr Ponticelli) we should be sitting pretty,

I remember when we signed Dimitri Konstontopalis (spelling), I believe he got 21-22 clean sheets for Hartlepool, who were in League 2. However, I don’t know if that was in all competitions or not.

Another disappointment I'm afraid.

He actually went on to do quite well after he left us didn’t he? Started for Middlesborough in the Championship when they got promoted!

Yep, was the main keeper when they went up from the Championship.

Robins has got them tight and the defensive look of our midfield helps.

But you can't really judge a top flight back 4 with one from L2 where the football standard is awful, it looked even worse on TV nearly as bad as England.
