Burge is not good enough (1 Viewer)

I know yesterday was a friendly etc... But some of the mistakes Burge makes is just not good enough. He looks like a nervous wreck and doesn't give confidence to the back line.

To be honest I thought Charles looked more commanding against Boro.

I really think this is a position that needs to be addressed just as much as getting new attacking players in.

If Mowbray thinks it needs addressing i am sure he will, still think he will give Burge half a dozen games to make his mark though.

seems he still has issues with corners, not a good sign.

i have faith in the manager but i do wonder if this might end up being a bigger issue than he expects/hopes it will be

He has been making the mistakes for months.

He's dreadful and should have been bombed out after that appalling lack of discipline against Worcester, which cost the club a place in the next round and potential revenue.

Don't think the Worcester incident was a reason to get rid, remember Johnson missed a penalty too, things happen in football matches, red mist, rush of blood etc,etc.just ability or inability. Scapegoating players for that sort of thing and a manager will lose a dressing room very quick, as Steven Pressley did i believe.

Yes I think he is a tad inexperienced but remember mowbray said why waste the budget on a new keeper when he feels he has a decent keep but no front line. Sort the front line out first while there is no one and worry about a keeper later and burge is still ok for now. Priorities

Missing a penalty is a bit different to Burge's actions though?

I do feel a decent keeper would be nice, would have the defence settle too. The amount of times Burge came out last season and didn't call and got in a muddle with a defender

I think it's key for the defence to know they have a decent keeper to breath confidence. Last season the defence was rubbish as it was plus they knew they had Burge behind them.

I'm always happy to give the lad a chance, can't say I'm fully convinced yet but hope he's used last season as his chance to learn.

Tony Mowbray has said he is okay regarding Leigh Burge but he is hardly likely to come out with "he is crap" is he. Wouldn't surprise me one little bit if new goalie was drafted in at the eleventh hour, seems to be plenty of 30 something experienced keepers about.

I don't disagree with you but that also works the other way around. The other issue we still have is that we are desperately short on attacking prowess. If you're attacking, you're not defending and therefore taking preassure of the defence and the GK. This was our major failing last season IMO, we just couldn't get the ball forward and this was putting us under constant pressure at the back meaning mistakes are going to happen.

Give Ricketts & Vincelot a bit of time to get to know the rest of the squad & vice versa. Then the defence should compensate for any shortcomings Burge has. Meanwhile you can't sideline him permanently if you want him to develop and become an asset.

Very true. I think if Burge is number 1 for the season then he is going to have his moments which will cost us points.

I think you need experience in goal unless they're an amazing talent.

We do need an experienced keeper without doubt as Burge is still learning his trade and will make errors.All players make mistakes but a keeper has to make less than anywhere else on the pitch,or else you will lose more than you win even with a decent defence.Brian Clough once said you build teams from the back starting with your goalie,and as Mowbray has been in the game long enough he would know he has to sort this out ?

Players with talent can get away with a lot more and be forgiven. I don't think for a minute he is good enough, even at this level.

Didn't those Pompey commentators say Burge was a Man of the Match contender for us last night? Also there's this from Andy Turner:

"Mowbray has given Lee Burge his vote of confidence and the young goalkeeper looked good in his first run out of the pre-season.He was left badly exposed for both Pompey goals but made a couple of reflex stops and again demonstrated good handling and command of his box as he claimed numerous high balls."

I have never been happy with Burge as first choice. At our level he would be adequate cover but we do need someone who can be relied on consistently.

Burge is a decent shot-stopper but he lacks other qualities. A goalkeeper needs to be well-organised and able to organise his defence and command his area. That will be what gives a defence confidence and I never feel that trust between keeper and defence is there with him. I do accept that our defence isn't the best but players are more likely to make rash decisions if they lack that confidence.

I have never seen Charles-Cook play so cannot offer a comparison. My preferred option would be to replace Burge and move him on, keeping the young lad on the bench as a potential future first choice.

GK is the only position where age is a factor,, you don't start off with knowing all or being complete,, you have potential that needs to grow,, you have to learn the craft, GK play to a later age for a reason.. The last thing they learn is patience that effects the decision making, and that only comes from experience and knowledge from playing.. Most Gk dont even mature until they are 28-29 years of age,, so i think its very harsh on a young boy to be throwing under the bus just yet..

I do However agree and have said before, we need a senior GK in the squad, Murphy was slated on here in by some but they would want him back today as you can see the value of experience. He is not and will never be the best but he is and would be one of the best on L1 and someone that would improve the squad right now... Problem is money you pay him it takes that money away from another area that needs strengthening, its a balancing act and one TM probably didnt think would be so restricted.

So we do need a senior, but dont be quick to judge, jump or get on this kids back and that is the same for Harries, Twins, Lawton, Stevenson or Finch they have to step up quicker but already ive seen comments out of depth,, not good enough. These are learning a different level, give them time, more than a pre season friendly at least...

Didnt Casillias (sorry if spelling is incorrect) play form Real Madrid in goal from the age of 18? Not saying Burge is the same standard but at 21-22 he should be given a chance. Honestly the only people i hear slating him all the time are on here. The manager, coach's and sport pundits/writers all seem to thing he has real potential. I think with the poor protection he has had previously, he was easily exposed and made to look rash and vulnerable. With a proper defense in front of him (im hoping they will all jell together) i think he could do well, a bit of confidence and he could shine. His shot stopping is good, but his commanding of the area needs improvement, surely with confidence and games that will improve.

The thing is with potential and stuff it means not now. Now is when it matters, if he has potential then send him on loan so he makes mistakes for somebody else.

I do fully fully agree, but the problem for us is the budget. If we have someone who has potential and we need money spent on other areas where we are severly lacking even potenial, surely the money should be spent there? If Burge has the potential to do the job, then i say give him a chance. The money can then be spent on forwards, who will take pressure off the keeper, as, if you are attacking you are not defending.

Edit: A decent keeper would be at least 2 grand from the weekley budget, in my estimations.
