Burge vs Charles Cook: the battle for number 1 (1 Viewer)

Manager Tony Mowbray has been keeping an eye out for a more experienced custodian prepared to come in to deputise, but the former Arsenal Academy player insists: “I want to play games, that’s what I’m here for.

“I’m not here to just be a No.2. Some goalkeepers accept that but I’m not and I want to push Lee as much as I can to better himself and myself.

“It was difficult last year and I went out to Nuneaton on loan but this year I came in for the summer and told the gaffer I want to play and that I am ready if Burgey ever gets injured.

“We all know how good a goalkeeper Lee is and hopefully the competition is there. We both want to be No.1 here and we push each other all the time.

“Hopefully I have shown the gaffer and the fans that in the games I’ve played.”

Who does Mowbray pick against Wigan? In my opinion I doubt he's going to throw Charles Cook in against Wigan for his first league start although he's a better keeper and commands his box much better than Burge. I've no doubt Charles Cook will play the most games this season. I think it's clear Mowbray knows Burge isn't the best he could get, so he's just trying to big up him in the media to keep him content until he can find a better and more experienced goalkeeper or hope Charles Cook steps up.

'We all know how good a goalkeeper Lee is'.... Yes we do, not very!

Anyone but Burge in my opinion, worst keeper to ever wear the jersey in my lifetime. I live in hope that the number 13 jersey was deliberately left vacant. If not, it's Charles for me!

If anyone was going to post this, it was bound to be you

From what I've seen of Cooke, he looks very confident in his own ability. Surprised to read that he has previously lacked confidence in coming for crosses; it certainly doesn't show any more!

Didn't realise he was 21 either. Thought he was slightly younger than that.

Will be surprised if he did oust Burge for the no.1 spot straight off, but wouldn't be surprised if he was our keeper at a later stage of the season.

dont think it matters for the first month neither will cope well with how we are set up. ive backed burge all pre season but you cant expect a kid with half a season experience to play in a side that your making hard to beat rather then a team you send out to dominate untill we get a few strikers and wingers in whoever is between the sticks is in for a rough time cause that ball is going forward to come straight back at you we have no way of keeping it forward and bombarding the opposition keeping them back (yet come september i expect we will be complete and able to handle having a young keeper quite well). in the end you stick with burge he has at least kept clean sheets at this level in a bad team

Whatever do you mean? I'm hurt by that accusation you git! It's as if you're implying I have a personal vendetta against him or something ;)

(Come on, someone had to fill Jordan Clarke's boots) :)

We should have gone for Joe Murphy.

Burge is a disaster waiting to happen. After the boo-boys treatment of Murphy I can't imagine he would want to come back here.

Burge does not make anyone in the crowd or anyone on the pitch confident of him, they'd rather kick the ball out of play with no one around him then give it back to Burge. I support everyone who wears the badge, but when his own players don't believe in ability it's hard for me and other fans to do so.

He can't even put his goal kicks into play ffs. I'm confident in and trust TM but I think he's got this one wrong. We'll have to see.

R C-C looks the better keeper to me. I've seen him a couple of times pre-season and I feel more assured with him between the sticks, I have to say. I hope he does push Burge.

Do you think he is worse than Debec and Nuzzo, not sure how long your lifetime has been to see this couple of gems.

Modern goalkeepers normally have good distribution skills but he is like a throwback to Oggy.

for me Burge is the third worst keeper I have seen us have behind those two and slightly ahead of Avramovic and little lad that played a couple of games then got released.

The best for me was Hedman followed by Kirkland.

Approaching 30 now so seen a fair amount of shite over the past 20 or so. Hyldgaard and Shearer are another couple to add to that list. Nuzzo and Debec were a special breed too but thankfully weren't around too long in to cause any long term damage.

As much as I hate criticizing any particular player - and I'm sure Burge gives his all - he just simply isn't good enough, even at League 1 and it appears to be glaringly obvious to the majority of us. I think this may be a decision that TM actually goes back on.

Agree with your 2 favourite keepers but would also add Westwood to that list. He was superb, can't ever remember him making an error. If only we could call on someone of his stature now.

I had forgotten that pair but I think both of those were better than Burge, I have no confidence in him he is a disaster waiting to happen and when he throws one in the fans will be on at him.

i think Debec caused me long term damage I had to drive back from a 5 v 1 defeat at Sheffield Weds because of him:facepalm:

If Charles-Cook is deemed to be the better goalkeeper of the two Tony Mowbray will start with him have no fear of that and if TM sees Burge as number one thats fine by me, he sees him every day i don't. As for signing an experienced keeper they are a very expensive comodity, older 30 odd year olds command mega buck wages and would make a big hole in a £2.5million budget. I am keeping my fingers crossed one of these two do the business, yes there will be balls ups along the way but lets give either or both a bit of slack ffs.

Any player makes a big hole in this pathetic budget, would be interesting to know if the budget grows if we sell more shirts or tickets than budgeted for.

Is he? The general feedback from fans who watched him at his Nuneaton loan spell and the pre season games is that Charles Cook has looked better and more confident.
He may have looked more confident but remember the end of last season, after all the fans had got off Burge's back, he was actually confident and a lot better. I even recall at Bristol city he had the ball on the ground ; their star striker was chasing him down and instead of just booting it he let him get close, sent him the wrong way and left him flat on his arse. Then booted it. My point being is if the fans give him chance and get off his back for every tiny mistake so he is confident, there's probably a good keeper in the making. Also Charles Cook has no experience whatsoever and needs to play in a cup game at least before the league.

You're right about the budget, it certainly puts constraints on signing any proven quality. Does the budget grow if we sell more shirts and tickets than budgeted for? Exiting and successful football will sell more shirts and tickets but first you need the quality players on the pitch to give you that. We could go round in that circle forever couldn't we. The club desparately needs to put their hand in their pocket to get a good solid goalie first, and then maybe they will reap the rewards afterwards.

Let's be careful else a Championship or Premiership club will come in for him. There's nothing to suggest he would be more suited to non-league football or league 2 at best.

He can't be much worse though, can he? I'd like to see Burgess moved on with a more experienced number brought in with Charles Cook as number two.

If Burge is better we should get an experienced number 1 and then Burge as number 2. Then Charles Cook should be moved on.

Just going about my business I have seen lots of shirts about, but another question has to be how much do we get from the sales of things in the shop, I have got my older boy a training shirt and want to get him the away shirt but if I thought little of the money was going into the playing budget I won't bother and get him the Spider-Man one he wants

It's all good and well people saying that we should give him a chance, but how many has he had and squandered already? He cannot carry out the basics and there's nothing to suggest that he is a good keeper in the making based on his performances.

Worcester game aside, some of the goals he has let in would be more suited to Sunday league. Peterborough at home, the free kick, Crewe game at home.. No need to go on.

It's a clean slate this season so will back him to begin with but if carrys on with his flapping, shit kicking, staying on his line, costing us points etc then surely enough is enough.

On the other hand there have been other occasions, even in this pre season, where he has tried to drag the ball past an oncoming attacker, and only just succeeded before ultimately putting the ball out of play, which he may as well have done before the drag back.

Been a number of occasions where he has almost cost us with this tactic, but has got lucky.

The only shot he should have saved but didn't was the Peterborough free kick. Burge is actually a decent shot stopper.

Get Danny Ireland back, at least he made the games entertaining!

I've only seen cook a couple of time but looks steady and commands his area with a good kick

He is a good shot stopper it is the rest of his game that is weak.
