Then he may as well leave this year. Zero incentive for him to sign for a year. Very limited reward for us also to give only a year.
Pros of Cal staying: It's being quoted regularly that he enjoys it here and the new players seem to have the same excitement levels and interests as him, which encourages his enthusiasm. And the new group are guaranteed to be here next season (if we don't sell them beforehand) so he knows who he'll be playing with.
As for a year, if we don't get promoted this season (which my head beats out my heart in saying we won't), him signing for a single year gives him another more promising chance of promotion with a group of players and fans that he connects with. He's no worse off at the end of that year and can leave on a free to anyone who wants him.
Pros of him leaving: He gets a massive pay rise and gets to play at a higher level.
Cons of him leaving: New club, new players to learn about, new managerial system with new tactics and attitudes. And this on top of playing at a new level that he doesn't know.
With those thoughts, why does Gus still come back to Cov to watch us play? He doesn't have to, gets nothing out of it professionally. Can't just be that he has a house down here, that doesn't need him to attend our games and there are often Prem games on TV that he can view. Does he still socialise with the current Cov players ? Has moving to Sheffield Utd improved his game ? Or just his wallet ?
Absolute tosh! The point of testing free agency is to secure a long term contract and maximise your salary at the highest level possible.
He’s just not going to sign a one year extension on his own accord as a 25/26 year old hitting his best form. That just isn’t sensible, what if he loses form or does his ACL again?
Ultimately, if we don’t get promoted, COH needs to feel that we’ll get promoted next season or 25/26 at the latest.
An interesting snippet from Darragh MacAnthony’s last podcast was that he felt Coventry becoming a premiership team was inevitable under the current ownership.
I’m glad you raised the Hamer point because as good as COH has been, he hasn’t hit the levels of Hamer last season. I have my doubts if COH can make an immediate impact at Premier League and could benefit with one more season with us.
Which part Wingy?Absolute tosh!
It’s debatable, I’ll give you that. Neither of us know he’ll do well until he plays in the Prem. The last bit mate.
I think it’s similar to HamerThe point of testing free agency is to secure a long term contract and maximise your salary at the highest level possible.

I think on current form absolutely he wouldIt’s debatable, I’ll give you that. Neither of us know he’ll do well until he plays in the Prem.
As a barometer, do you think COH would start for Leicester, Leeds or Southampton?
He wouldn’t get in ahead of KDH at Leicester already and all 3 teams will strengthen again in the summer. It’s debatable, I’ll give you that. Neither of us know he’ll do well until he plays in the Prem.

He suddenly for 2-3 months became unreal and Callum adding goals is doing just that
I’m not sure he would. Is he he better player than Piroe or Dewsbury-Hall? I’d say no. As for Southampton, he probably is better than Smallbone who looks the most like-for-like. But I don’t know that team really.I think on current form absolutely he would
I think we have some sky blue tinted glasses sometimes... i'm not saying he's not a great player but to assume he would start for the "promoted" teams i think is wrong.I think on current form absolutely he would
Exactly my point. If we got promoted this season we need to invest in a lot of players. He wouldn’t get in ahead of KDH at Leicester already and all 3 teams will strengthen again in the summer.
I think fans forget the gap between the premier league and the championship is enormous.
Hamer ripped up the championship last year but if he wasn’t an ex City player you would not have noticed him at the Blades this season. Last match he started on the bench. Sheffield United are the worst team to grace the Premier league in decades and he still doesn’t stand out.
Not necessarily. It's pretty sure he will go, but there is absolutely no benefit in him signing a contract with us before the end of the season even if he is considering staying. He knows he will get better offers at the end of the season, including from us. And he knows we will try our best to match whatever he is offered elsewhere. If we don't go up, he's 100% gone, if he was going to buy into us again next year and another chance at promotion, he'd have already signed the contract.
I'm not sure how many offers he'll have, the step up is huge and there's not many teams in the prem that he'd be getting game time, one of the promoted teams maybe or the likes of Luton if they manage to stay up.
He's obviously got to take his chance like Hamer did, but whether he cuts it in the prem is a different question...
It is absolute tosh that Mucca Mad Boy's post is absolute tosh.....Absolute tosh!
The benefit being if he gets injured in the next 20 games he would still have a contract past this summer - low risk probablyNot necessarily. It's about the wage structure isn't it, new players here @ whatever verus CO on under that when he has never Cost a fee and judging by the improved offers has not received his worth from us?
Hamer’s doing about as well as you could expect in that Sheffield United team, not sure that’s good enough for another PL move though.
How is that the best deal for player? Best deal for him is to hang tight and play his socks off and look at all his offers in the summerA compromise contract is starting to sound the best deal for both club and player.
1 or 2 year deal (to cover him for injury absence) but with a clause to allow him to talk to Prem clubs if they come in for him.
Read on Twitter that he has had an offer from another club. This early though, that has to be a foreign based team as they're the only ones who can offer pre-contracts.

But it’s not up to usForget about the possibility of Cal getting injured , as of the other night , Jamie Allen is probably out for the season, it’s what comes with the territory.
My main problem with all the contract talks etc , is what figure do you put on a replacement for Callum & is there anyone out there , that won’t take 2 seasons to acclimatise to the heights we are at ?
Why would he need to sign that? He can speak to prem sides in 4 months and no fee involvedA compromise contract is starting to sound the best deal for both club and player.

Not the limit for new signings though, I think he's right expect parity or offski.I get the fixation and sentiment with COH but if we really are a club on the up then we ought to start having some respect for ourselves and not suggesting pushing ourselves beyond our limits and beyond what's sensible when a player simply wouldn't do the same for us. We can't expect loyalty in football when players careers are so short that realistically they need to furnish themselves with as much £ in that period and who can blame them? I do understand the 1 year security suggestion but that's just a risk that appears to be playing out.
Sounds like COH has been offered the limit we can go to. I'd love him to stay because he comes with the addition of an infectious personality which is less common but there will be more players in the future that will come in and we'll adore - our newish recruitment setup appears to be bearing some fruit already on that.

If only they knew.I don’t know what the latest wage offer is none of us do.
I’d offer him parity at least with our highest paid player maybe thats what is what is narking him, a 2/3 year deal doesn’t need release clauses anyone in the PL if they wanted him would just pick up the phone, negotiate and buy him.
As well as a football club we are a business too we must remember that, letting a player like COH go for free has to be crazy and throwing millions away, his replacement could cost millions too a bit of a dummy whammy, could be as much as £20million+ all told, madness.
Palace will have a new manager rumour at the moment is Steve Cooper who will know COH they have just spent about £ 20 million on Blackburns Adam Wharton would they want COH too, I expect the Palace war chest for a new manager to be pretty strong. If he goes end of season on a free then I have no hard feelings he stayed the season played his best football and tried to bring us up with him for that he is a club hero and we arent losing money on him as we signed him on a free.
He’s ready for the prem I think at someone like a Crystal Palace, imagine that midfield wow Eze, Olise, O’hare. Thats a thing of nightmares for defences
