Just heard today that a good friend of mine died from cancer. She only said a few days ago that she felt "a bit under the weather".
That's at least 8 or 9 close friends that I've lost over the years to this shit disease! All except one, was 45 or under. No bloody age!
Sorry for rant. It's just something that really pisses me off!

Don’t apologise for the rant , it’s touched 3 members of my family over the the last couple of years in one case the last couple of months .
Thankfully all are on the mend

I remember as a kid the odds of getting cancer was 1 in 4 ,now it’s 1 in 2

Thank you Nick. My own personal disease is heart disease (as I think you may know) but I have lost some really close friends to cancer. My best friend, who was a steward with me at HR died at just 40. We'd actually celebrated his 40th with a great surprise party for him. That was at the end of October 1997. I'd videoed the do for him and his family and put it onto DVD for them. I went round literally the next week-end with the finished DVD and his wife said he was in Walsgrave for tests because he'd had severe stomach pains. Anyway, it was cancer. He died on December 24th. As quick as that. Eight bloody weeks!
One thing he didn't lose was his wacky sense of humour. When I went to visit him he said, "Hey, let's go downstairs and outside for a fag!". I said, "Nige, you've never smoked!". "I know," he said, "but it ain't gonna kill me now is it!" and just laughed his bloody head off. Terrific bloke.

it's pretty worrying that it appears to be one in two now get cancer. I'm sure it used to be one in 5 when I was young but lifestyle etc has had a huge impact on numbers.
When we heard it was 50% my wife, who has leukemia (C.M.L) simply said " I've got it, which means you'll be okay ! " Made me laugh .

Sad to hear that HH, no need to say sorry, this is the perfect place to vent. I have seen many people I love devastated by cancer, some just children. It's just so sad that I truly believe we will be able to control this within my lifetime, but not quick enough to save those precious to us.

Would truly be one of man's greatest achievements if they could find a cure.

Heart disease is the number one killer by a long way.
The scary thing about cancer though is you can have it and not know until it's too late.
Also, there doesn't appear to be alot you can do to prevent it since there is a genetic component that can make you more susceptible.

My Dad died of it when I was 11, absolutely devastated. My Mam died of it 14 years ago. Then my big Sister died of it. I hate this disease. I'm 61, like H I have heart disease. 2 heart attacks, 2 assessment for a heart transplant and a defibrillator fitted.Fuck me, it's like waiting for God on here this morning.

That's really tough, Otis. I know from personal experience how bad it is for your wife's father to die so far away. My wife's dad died 5 years ago on Christmas morning. It was, needless to say, a horrible Christmas.

Went out for drink with good friend yesterday. Last time I saw him was the day he retired...4weeks ago.
I Said not heard much from you this last month must be the fun of not having to go to work.
He just said the wife had been keeping a cancer diagnosis from him for the few weeks before he retired so he didn’t worry in his last days at work. She has now started chemo...just hoping for some positive news in the weeks ahead.

My wife is due to be discharged tomorrow after her major abdominal surgery this week, and we just have to wait the couple of weeks for the pathologists to report on whether anything they took was malignant. What fingernails??

To those that have lost family friends etc to this disease you have my deepest sympathy , my mum succumbed to it 4 years ago would have been her birthday next Friday still miss her.
To those waiting for test results i hope you get good news , my best mate was diagnosed with prostate cancer late last year fortunately was caught early enough and has recovered now.
Each year thousands of men die through stubbornness........dont be one of them something wrong go to the quacks asap.

Sorry to hear about this Houch. There's not many people who haven't been affected by Cancer sadly. My dad died of it aged 76 so not young. But from diagnosis to his death was only 2months.
I've lost aunties and uncles to this vile disease too. Can it be ever be cured ? I read an article once that it's worth billions of pounds to the health industry, through medicine etc. It also hinted that they don't want to lose that money, so even if a cure was found they'd dismiss it ?

Lost my mum to it in May 96 aged just 57,From diagnosis to passing was 4 months.
Was horrible seeing her deteriorating every day visiting her drip fed with diamorphine.
My thoughts with everyone affected,I've been there stay strong!!!

My sister who's been a nurse for decades told me that a Cancer surgeon told her that it can be cured. She replied to him " why then are people still getting it ? That's when he told her there's so much cash spent on cures etc, they don't want to lose so much money. If that's true it sums up the saying : the love of money is the root of all evil.

Lost two friends and one uncle to cancer this year (and an aunt to a heart attack). Sadly it happens to it all in the end but the positives is tha they are catching them earlier and able to treat more and more. Horrible disease
