Captaincy (2 Viewers)

Honestly, as unpopular as it may be, I think Eccles should get it.

He's about the only one who seems somewhat vocal, Lati aside.

Binks seems somewhat vocal but doesn't seem like the leader type.

Said in another thread Sheaf is no captain. Saying that I don’t know who I would give it to .. possibly Binks?

Even Lati isn't a leader really. It's a very quiet and timid group. If we're playing well, it's not an issue as they are all laughing and joking. When the going gets tough, they are petrified.

Can’t really have your captain making mistakes week in week out though, Binks is a liability most weeks so being captain ain’t gonna help the situation

Yep exactly.
Which is why Lati doesn’t work as a captain for me.
vocal, great head on his shoulders and is a genuine leader but he’s pants and puts us in bad situations.

Sheaf ticks a lot of stereotypical captain boxes (smart guy, central midfielder, defensively minded etc) but in reality he doesn’t seem cut out for it.

I hate that everyone thinks it's popular to hate on Sheaf. He was outstanding last season, injured at the start of this and so influential in our mini run when back to match sharpness. Been playing injured for a few weeks still looks good on the ball and I'm sure will improve under Lampard. He's not a vocal leader and needs to add some goals, but you shouldn't need an armband to lead. He's more of a by example type captain, others need to step up too. Leaderships is more than wearing an armband. It seems there are some who like Eccles or Sheaf, I like both. We have far greater problems to address.

your captain needs to be the first name on the team sheet. Is there anyone who played today that you can see playing every game this season?

nobody stands out to me as even someone you would be bothered if they were out of the line up let alone captain material

Not mature enough yet. Has picked up silly bookings. Still needs to be left to concentrate on his game. Maybe next season yes!

I honestly think the role of the captain in football is completely over stated, especially in the modern game. What you need is for every player to do their job correctly.

That people can't suggest an alternative to someone who most agree isn't really captain material does show you how few leaders are in that dressing room though. The manager and coaches can only do so much from the side, having people on the pitch who can rally their teammates or help less experienced players through difficult moments is so important.

The only player we have guaranteed to start is Haji Wright. The only person I would say is captain material is Bidwell. Plus the role of a club captain is way wider than match day.

It does look like Sheaf's performances are suffering for various reasons, maybe pressure on him as the captain is one of those, maybe not. If it is, perhaps that role needs to go to someone else.

I don't think it's the captaincy, I think he's struggling with injuries (Saddle said he's having injections before games) and not helped by the team changing every week, and others around him being so poor.

But then you need someone to shout at them on the pitch to make sure they do their jobs correctly ( the coach can't always be in that vicinity)

Just a wider symptom of our problems in central midfield, despite Doug thinking that position's covered. You can see though how much this team needs a few players who can provide leadership on the field during difficult moments.

The difference McF made to his defence by helping to co-ordinate and communicate with them was huge in the playoff season. When he got injured, we quickly started conceding daft goals and the defence looked lost. When he returned, so did the solidity at the back.

He was de facto captain last season so I don’t believe being official club captain makes much difference.

Not many of our players you could say are doing better than last season. Wright scored goals but his individual performances attracted criticism often (which was OTT). Ultimately, that’s down to coaching and tactics that we all know has dropped off since 23/24.

This team should comfortably be in the Top 10 and unfortunately, the tactics and/or coaching just hasn’t been good enough. We struggle to break down set defences and constantly concede avoidable goals.

The one silver lining is that the underlying data shows we’re arguably in a false position.

I completely agree, its not about a captain it's about leadership across the pitch. McF would organise the defense and talk all through the game regardless of the arm band. He didn't stop when Kelly was in the team. It goes back to the shite recruitment. We knew our defense was a problem last season, yet we re-signed Binks when we could have brought someone in with a bit of experience, so we basically have the same defense as last season.

Something Mourinho said a long time ago was about having a strong spine to any successful team. You look at what we have and in all 3 parts of the pitch, there's nobody who you can bank on every week to perform to a decent standard.

If Simms had missed Bassette's header in the first half we wouldn't have heard the end of it. Shocking miss.

Fans love Bassette’s work rate (rightly so) whilst overlooking that he’s actually wasting a lot of energy and his work in the box is inferior to Simms and Wright. If anything, I want Bassette and BTA coming off the bench against tired defenders.

I almost preferred it when we had less strikers because we at least stuck with Godden and then Simms. Now, as soon as someone has a bad game, they’re dropped and no one is getting a good run in the team.

100%, you look at at the play off run we had

-----------------Wilson
---McNulty - Fadz - Doyle
--------Hamer-Sheaf Kelly
---------------Gyokeres .
As our spine

The wingbacks and the front of the box or 10 and a front 2 interchanged quite a bit but that in the main was the spine of the team.

The spine of the team this season changes every week, there's no guaranteed goalkeeper, the central defence keeps changing, injuries and suspensions have meant the midfield keeps changing, and no one has made the striker position their own.
