It may have been January transfer deadline day, but Coventry City players chose to spend the afternoon visiting pupils at John Gulson primary school, to help launch a new Premier League initiative delivered by SBitC.

John Gulson are one of six current schools benefiting from the delivery of the new and exciting Premier League Primary Stars (PLPS). The programme aims to develop skills and ambition both on and off the sports field for girls and boys aged 5-11 years old.

As part of the programme, SBitC coaches work closely with teachers to help improve their skills and confidence in the delivery of PE lessons and demonstrate this by delivering engaging and progressive lessons to the children in their class for twelve weeks. In addition to this, every school who registers for PLPS also benefits from assemblies, PSHE workshops, after-school clubs and mass-participation days where the whole school can receive high-quality coaching.

SBitC Lead Coach Aaron Hill delivered a series of fundamental skills activities to Year 5 pupils in the style of a fun circuit-based lesson which gave children opportunities to improve their balance, co-ordination and agility in small groups.

After a brief Q and A with first-team players; Gael Bigirimana, Ben Stevenson, Ruben Lameiras and Cian Harries, the Sky Blues stars joined in with activities, demonstrated their skills and gave feedback to pupils to help them improve. Players were impressed with the attitude of the learners and the range of questions they were asked and it certainly made the days of some keen football fans!

It wasn’t just John Gulson who were lucky enough to enjoy a player visit. The rest of the CCFC squad went along to the remaining five schools taking part in the PLPS programme, answering questions and getting involved in sporting activities. Player visits are organized by SBitC each month throughout the football season and provide a unique link between the community and CCFC.
