CCFC SPEED MERCHANTS - Who Is The Fastest of Them All ??? (1 Viewer)

Lots of posts on SBT ref our lack of pace in the team so I was just wondering, for a bit of fun, to get an opinion of who indeed have been our "speed merchants" over the last 20 years and to nominate the fastest of them all.

So, just to lay the ground rules each player must have been on CCFC's books between 1991-2011 to qualify for nomination.

The ctiteria for speed must be a player who has a combination of running fast with the ball and running fast after the ball at least over the first ten/fifteen yards.

Below is my choice, for what its worth, after trawling my addled brain and memory box over the years and to aid selection I have categorised each nominee as Quick, Very Quick and Super Quick during their stay at CCFC.

I may have missed a few but here goes:

SUPER QUICK
Darren Huckerby (96-99)
Craig Bellamy (00-01)
JohnWilliams (92-95)

VERY QUICK
Peter Nudlova (91-97)
Noel Whelan (95-00)
Andy Morrell (03-06)
Mickey Gynn (83-93)
John Salako (95-98)
Julian Joachim (01-04)

QUICK
Robbie Keane (99-00)
Cyrille Regis (84-91)
Jay Tabb (06-09)
Aaron Gunnersson (08-11)
Gary McSheffrey (99- )

My top two favourites are The Huckster for close control and exceptional pace plus the "Flying Postman" John Williams who was more of a longer distance sprinter.

So after all that my choice is definitely DARREN HUCKERBY as the fastest of them all over the last twenty years.

Yes folks what an omission

Mifsud defo in super quick category but Hucks still shades it for me as he retained the ball more on his runs where as MM at times lost his way

Salako had a dead mans tendon by the time we signed him and had lost much of his pace. I don't ever remember Keane being that quick, either-he was just good!

John Williams was known as the flying postman, as you say.

But for me, Kevin Gallacher was the fastest, great at taking on his man and beating him. Could play as a forward or a winger.

Yes, Kevin Gallacher was indeed fast, Super Quick category for me - he played for CCFC from 1990 - 1993 and scored 28 goals in 100 league games

ignoring the ball issue - john williams won the league crown as the fastest player across all 4 divisions at the time

Runner up in the same competition ...... Leigh Jenkinson

I would say
Christie
Rod
Cody
And keogh are quicker than gunnarsson

According to rod in the programme he said keoghs the quickest in the team.

I would also say mifsuds top 3 quickest.

Gotta be the Maltese Midget for the quickest over 20 yards or so.....but Tommy Hutchinson would have beaten him if it was 18 yard box to 18 yard box. His stride was about 4 of Mifsud's!

Out of the three categories I did place AG and GMc in the third and you can't argue they were not quick compared to say the Juke/Bell/Cody/Sammy etc and don't forget it includes moving with the ball as well

Am I imagining it, or did Julian Joachim have a good turn of speed on him? If he did, it's probably about all he had to offer!

He did, he was still quick for us (under Black) but not as incredibly lightening as he was at Leicester as a youngster. Talk about unfulfilled potential...but not so sure he's as quick now-he was Coalville Towns big marquee signing this summer!

I remember well there was a goal that Joachim scored when the defender hoofed it against him on the goal line. I don't remember who we were playing, but it was certainly a contender for easiest goal scored, certainly a gimme that we could well use about now!

Jordan Clarke can move too.

How about the Moroccans? Chippo was electric in his first season down the right before he moved into the middle.

Well folks thanks for that response it prompted a fair bit of discussion.

Done a quick straw poll on your inputs and coupled with my previous research it looks like this could be the preferred election:

WINNER: Michael Mifsud

SECOND: John Williams

THIRD: Darren Huckerby

As a footnote for the older/ancient supporters (like me) the following where all quite nifty in their day:

(Tommy Hutch, Steve Hunt, Ian Wallace, John Aloisi, Gary Bannister, Dave Bennett, Dave Clements, Terry Gibson, Cobi Jones, Richie Partridge, Ronnie Rees, David Smith, David Speedie, Patrick Suffo)

Never thought Mifsud was actually that fast. He looked it cause his legs were moving so fast but I do seem to remember him getting caught up when running with ball quite often
