Completing the census online is straightforward, convenient and secure - and you may find it quicker than doing it on paper
In March you’ll get a 2011 Census questionnaire in the post. On the front will be your personal internet access code which you’ll need to use to sign in and complete your online census questionnaire on our secure data collection website, available from 4 March. This will act like a password to make sure we give you the right questionnaire. You will need to use your code every time you need to access your online questionnaire.
You will be able to complete your census online questionnaire any time between 4 March and 6 May 2011
Simply visit www.census.gov.uk after 4 March and follow the on-screen instructions. Just remember that the information you give will need to be about the people living or staying in your household on census day, 27 March 2011.
Should you need to take a break, you’ll be able to save what you’ve done so far and come back to finish your questionnaire later.
It should take about ten minutes for each person to complete the census online, plus another 10 minutes or so for the household and visitor questions.
Completing online is great for larger households – you can include up to 30 people, while the paper questionnaire is limited to six people unless you ask for additional continuation questionnaires.
What if I get stuck?
The questions are straightforward. We’ll give you plenty of prompts along the way, plus more detailed help on every single question and just about every related topic you can think of. Everything will be there, right in front of you. Online.
Before you start, it’s a good idea to read through the paper questionnaire first, in case you need to check any details, such as a post code or job title. If you’re unsure about how to answer any of the questions, simply click through from the home page to browse our online help pages.
We know that being able to complete the census online should be a big help to people with sight, hearing or literacy difficulties. With this in mind, there’ll be lots of extra help available to make sure as many people as possible are able to complete their questionnaire independently.
Is it secure?
Yes it is. Anything and everything you tell us is protected by law. The security of the 2011 Census data collection website (open from 4 March) has been tested by independent experts.
