Are we taking this seriously enough? Are figures are roughly where Italy was two weeks ago and look at them now.

But we've just got Boris saying wash your hands and sing happy birthday. Heard talk on the radio tonight that he overruled the experts at the Cobra meeting today who wanted to bring in restrictions on public events and social media has loads of people saying they've flown into the country, some even from places with more severe outbreaks than us, without a word being said, no quarantine not even any mention of it.

Hong Kong Flu in 1968 killed 80,000 people in the UK. Is Corona really going to cause that many fatalities here?

A whole cruise ship full of infected people just docked in California and that's only one state away from me.
If I stop posting, it's probably got me.
I meet every criteria for those most vulnerable.

Not sure it’s helpful comparing to something 50 years ago and the big impact is on the wider health service and actually being able to treat everyone

If we get told to stay at home and self quarantine, who's going to pay our wages?

Company over here has been talking about people using their annual leave until the 3rd April, fuck that, especially when there’s no reason why it’s not possible to work from home.

He might have a point (by default) at this stage, but seasonal flu doesn’t have an infection rate that increases by a third every 2 days - which is the current rate here in the UK.

spot on. People shouting about no airport checks and putting whole country in lock down aren’t considering the benefits (or not) and full implications of those decisions ie unless you start quarantining everyone off certain flights it will make very little difference - check someone’s temp off the plane ? What about everyone else that might’ve got it whilst on there that are not yet symptomatic ? Hopefully anyone knowingly ill wouldn’t have flown in the first place !

I still believe good personal hygiene and consideration for others (self isolate if you’ve been at risk) are the main way to stem the flow. Nobody knows for sure though.

ps this isn’t me being unsympathetic or not worried by the way but I believe the human cost of things like full lock downs (currently - it might have to be necessary at some point) are potentially far greater. It’s like the younger and healthier emptying the shelves and taking up all the home delivery slots....leave them for the elderly, those at greater risk and those that can’t get out the house FFS !

If I have no choice but to stay at home when I can quite easily go to work then I am not using annual leave and if it's out of my boss's hands why is he going to have to still pay me?

A lock down is going to cause so much shit, businesses won't be in business any more.

There was a taxi driver on the radio yesterday, saying he doesn't get sick pay and if he gets sick he will carry on working. Can't afford not to.

Exactly.

The other thing is schools, if they close then parents can't go to work or have to pay a childminder.

I think the schools will be amongst the first things to close. Then people can't go to work and businesses will struggle to function.

I think that’s why government has already said its suspending regs around maximum class size.
I bet those doing GCSE and A level...will be told to work/revise at home...and catch up with teachers via internet. Younger age groups to attend but if teacher off classes will be merged and/or some non working parents and ex teachers drafted in to teach/child mind...at least in short term

C4 news had an expert who said it's completely unnecessary at this point to stop gatherings etc, pritty much said if they enforce draconian measures too soon, by the time they really need them, the public get sick of it and just go back to normal.

It's a tough call, but imo we should have banned all travel from infected countries immediately.

Italy is the exception rather than the rule though I would think. It’s got a much higher infection and mortality rate than anywhere else and will likely to not be replicated elsewhere

Does anybody think it may have been around before it got announced in the media? Interesting if you think about it who knows how long it could of been in this country for!

would be shocked if he overruled the experts ! In actual fact I’d heard from day one him and Hancock had a pact to follow the expert advice even if public opinion was pushing for another direction (as it is now with people suggesting more draconian measures). This would make sense as you’ve always got that as your back up if things didn’t go to plan. If you went against expert advice and it fucks up then it’s not a good look !

Or we send all these kids to be looked after by our elderly parents. Which doesn’t seem a very smart idea either.

Which then begs the question, is staying on as normal and living our normal lives the best option? Its a tough one

It’s huge swathes of the economy. We only got sick pay this year and that was because people were complaining that others were coming in sick and infecting people.

The Tories are in lala land if they think most people can just take two weeks off with no issues. Massively out of touch.
