Coventry City away support (1 Viewer)

is it me or has our away support dramatically improved over the last 15 years .
I’ve been travelling away with city almost every game for a few years now and it feels like it is .
Some serious numbers taken to a lot of places in recent years , and becoming known throughout the football league as having “big” away support .
One video on YouTube even ranking us in the top 8 in England in regards to how good the away fans are
Even Talksport mentioning our terrific away support on the back of mentioning our poor home support

Don’t remember it being this good even towards the end of the PL tenure

Probably to do with the fact we have new grounds to visit as we’re dropping through the divisions!

Most grounds only take about 1500. We sell that and fill our allocation. Other teams take 2k in higher leagues to a place offering 4k and it looks poor.

I think our average this season is about 1200 , that would put us around 8th highest in the championship

It helps that because of the smaller allocations people buy tickets sooner and it gets the ball/dare I say bandwagon rolling and others rush to buy

It's cos 'home' in no way feels like home.

Ground tourism is a massive factor......a traditional and proper football ground is an endangered species.

.....and cos we're in with a fucking shout of a top 6 finish for the first time since 1066....

It's improved a bit over the last 5 years I think. It's probably similar numbers wise to what it ever was but seems higher in smaller grounds set against a declining home gate.
Ultimately, the away support whilst great brings few tangible benefits to the club.

Conversely despite me thinking how it might help the team rather than playing in a 3/4 empty soulless bowl, we'r 4th in the hope tabe but 11th away. Perhaps the added burden of expectation makes them sometimes freeze, especially with so many younger players. Similar to how we often struggle on the big home gated eg Accrington.

Which site are you using for the stats? We’re definitely not 11th for away support, top 3 I imagine

I wonder if a few people “found” away games during the Sixfields debacle. Also people staying away from home for political reasons. May not make a huge impact on home gates but a couple of hundred new regulars is significant away.

Tbh I've been going away years. It's the same faces it ever was. There are more pubs running their own buses these days though so you get plenty of people who dip in and out

You're right it's about being in league one for a number of years and now in the second. It's to to do with going to Sixfields. I'll just leave it there

Well l remember going to Leeds in the first division twice and we couldn't even fill the small corner same at Bolton old ground sure there were more but they are the ones that stick out.

We're still behind Luton and Lincoln in the away averages. It's unlikely that we'll overtake them as Lincoln have their big following to the Ricoh and Luton have Notts County on the last game of the season.

I said ages ago that we'll probably be beaten to away averages by those 2 as they'll both bring 3k+ to the Ricoh and both only gave us 1k each.
But that said, I doubt either team sold out FGR or took 1k to Carlisle on a freezing day or sell out the majority of away games in a day. And neither team would sell as many for Wembley if play off finals are needed for any team!

Coventry have always had the potential to take big numbers for big games but our Away support now is as good as it ever was on a weekly basis in the Premier League bar some destinations....in fact when you consider where we are it’s actually considerably better

We averaged similar numbers for years in the top league (someone correct me if I’m wrong). The big followings often went to the same grounds year in year out - Spurs, Arsenal, Villa, QPR generally etc.

I think these days there is a certain amount of kudos associated with going away hence more of a feeling of terrace culture, drinking, potential for more banter and it really attracts the lads in their 20’s and 30’s. Representing Cov etc is something people wanna be associated with, we are the big boys in this league, the famous Coventry City etc etc.

You can feel the potential for toxic behaviour for sure and we have a substantial number of wannabes and hooligans in development - I was talking to the CCFC Safety guy at Crewe and he is all too aware of the future challenges if we continue to do well.

However, we are a big City club and we have always had that to a certain extent. I must admit I like a bit of measured arrogance, invading pubs and giving a bit of banter out as long as the lid is kept on, but some of our fans do replicate the behaviour of some of the England fans in Holland this week.

I must admit, whenever I go away I’m praying for a good performance, not just for the result, but because I’ve seen the toxic reaction when we lose and play badly (Bury, Rochdale, Oxford spring to mind). I also, of course, remember good occassions (Mansfield, Crewe, Wolves). It’s a shame the result can have such a negative effect on some fans, most teams lose a number of games every season, usually because the other team just so happen to be better on the day.
