I listened to his interview about a new contract this morning on Mercia in the car.

Sadly I think he may be off as well, his response was that he is waiting till the end of the season to sum up his options, which basically means I am seeing if anyone else offers me more money, and I will go there. Can't blame him really, why commit yourself to a team which is near enough heading for relegation..

Another cock up by sisu by not offering new contracts at an earlier stage! And leaving it till last minute, we will more than likely lose him on a free in the summer now like what happened with Westwood..

Even if Cranie was offered a deal last year (say with 18 months to go on his deal) I would wager that he would still be walking away from us at the end of this season for free.

I don't think you can blame SISU for a single players choice, and if you were the player wouldn't you want a bigger slice of the pie?

I'll be gutted to see him go though, but not as gutted as I would be if it were Keogh.

In a way we could blame sisu as they are not willing to increase their wage budget. They are trying to build a quality squad on a shoestring budget. Quality and shoestring don't go together very well in the same sentence. Considering how many players left in the summer, surely an increase in wage for the important players left whose contracts are running out? (clingan and crainie)

Or, the flipside of that arguement is that they are trying to build a side within an operating budget that doesn't continue to cripple the club and meet fifas new bullshit law about operational losses....

I totally agree with your sentiment, I wish we'd have given King £20k a week and offered Westwood £20k too so they stayed. But it's a business that they are running and the ship needs to be ran a lot tighter than when the old board (before SISU) were here. So those kinds of wages for 'important' players are never gonna happen.

Cranie is a fantastic CB, I think he'll be a huge loss. He keeps improving each year and is starting to show the potential which got him in the England U-21's. I suppose it didn't help him playing out of position for 2 years!

If I wanted us to make sure we kept hold of 3 players, they would be Cranie, Keogh and Jutkiewicz.

To be fair I have to agree with what your saying we would all like he best players to stay. We half the reason is the players agents! They are the ones who are trying to get a bigger wage for their player, mainly because they get a bigger cut from it!

Cranie, Keogh and Juke would be the first I would like to keep as well but I think none of them will be here this time next year, unless something drastic happens in the next few weeks

IMHO we should always be re-newing "good" players 18 months out. OK, it will cost us some money, but then we can sell them still with 12 months left on the contract for decent money. Instead, we put the players in the position of strength by letting them run down the contract and leaving for a free. If, 18 months before, they still whinge, then sell and use the transfer fee for replacements.
Seems obvious I know - but with any dwindling asset, letting it run down to zero is madness.

I see Cranie as more of a utility player than an integral part of our squad, with Mcpake leaving as well it will be a loss though. I think Wood however can do as good as job as Cranie imo.

I have to say that Cranie is an average player who puts in solid performances from time to time but has always made shocking mistakes and at times lacks quality where needed.
I witnessed this a couple a season's ago at Blackpool and have seen it emerge on many occasions since. Not sure why some on here think he is a great CB? I don't think he is. He is both too lightweight and too short. Would much rather have an all round CB the likes of Wood with authority in the air, not bad on pace and gets an odd goal or two when brought forward at corners and free kicks.

I think we can blame them for a lot of early contract blunders. We should be offering longer term deals a much earlier locking players into contracts to maximise value when situations like this happen. We are in a much worse position based on our contract negotiations than I can ever remember and have built a team for league 1 without even meaning to!. This law is also just a smoke screen.

I believe the year is 2017 ish,and the budget is allowed to be 20%ish over income ,read this somewhere a while back,so might be a little off,the cuts will come in incrementally ,and we've jumped the gun very early ,convenient for SISU imo

Undoubtedly more players on the market and lower salaries available. Will hit a lot of clubs hard, many will struggle to get any where near the targets proposed

All of which leads me to believe a lot of clubs will be let off initially, exceptions will be allowed & punishments wil be light.

How on earth a Championship Club with a turnover typically less than half that of a League One club can manage the transition heaven alone knows.

The other tactic that is likely to become more prominent is for rich owners to iinflate club turnover with lucrative sponsorship deals.
