Coventry City Under-18’s coach Ian Foster believes having the Academy players playing at the Ricoh Arena will do wonders for their development.

The Sky Blues will host Shrewsbury Town in the FA Youth Cup First Round with the fixture to be played at the Ricoh Arena and tickets are £3 for adults and £1 for concessions.

Coventry last won the FA Youth Cup in 1987, the same year as the senior team’s FA Cup triumph. Foster is hoping the young players can learn a lot from playing in this prestigious tournament.

The coach commented: “The players are all excited and it is definitely a fixture we all look forward to as it is such a great tournament.

“We have had a great draw in the sense that we are at home so we get to impress the supporters to come and watch tonight.

“They are all looking forward to playing at the stadium tomorrow night and hopefully we can get the result we need.

“In training you can see what it means. They are all desperate to get into the starting XI tomorrow night and make their own impression.

“Most importantly, it is great for their development that they can play in such a high profile game.”

Foster joined the club in September having had a successful playing career at clubs such as Hereford United and Kidderminster Harriers.

He holds a UEFA Pro Licence and has previously managed Irish sides Galway United and Dundalk.

The City coach says he has really enjoyed his time at the club so far and hopes to see the Academy side progress this year.

He added: “I have really enjoyed it here so far and we have a smashing group who want to achieve. It is my job to help them get to the next level and I can’t wait to see that happen.

“Coventry are an established football club and the biggest in the area, and over recent seasons, the Academy has been doing fantastically well. It is great to see how many Academy Graduates are coming through into the first team.

“It was a huge incentive in coming to the football club, knowing that these actually do get an opportunity here. Hopefully I will be seeing plenty of players coming through the first team over the next few years.”

 But fear not, maybe this is Joy's way of taking a more hands on approach.

It will be. It will be Joy taking on the role.

First thing she is going to do is teach new kids ducking and diving and how to argue against penalties.

You can just imagine them standing there demanding "three senior" referees, to replace the one that "got the decision wrong"!

Surprised Sisu didn't word it that they want 'proper' judges next time.

No, no, no - as with the Administrator they want Sisu appointed Judges! :claping hands:

Is this simple cost-cutting, or are they unhappy with his performance? I thought that in general terms SP was happy with the flow of players coming from the academy.

The timing of this, just after the JR, and aligned with Blair Adams also being paid off is a little worrying - but then we've got TF talking about six-figure sponsorship deals and ML (apparently) saying that Wilson won't leave either (except for silly offers). Personally, I'm not convinced about all of the optimism spilling out of the SISU camp about the upcoming season, but that's probably just me... ;)

To give them the benefit of the doubt: Pressley got his guy in over Rioch early on and this could just be more of his restructuring. He does more tightly integrate the youth setup and this might mean redundancies.

As with everything Sisu, we won't know until it's too late.

Definitely feels like a meltdown is happening with staff and players contracts being terminated. I don't believe for a second SP wanted to let him go.

Yep, that's a reasonable enough comment. It could well just be restructuring - I suppose it's the timing and everything else around it that make me nervous. No actual evidence in farness.

lose a JR, appeal the JR, let one of the one senior players leave and let a coach go

I must say, the past 24 hours has sadly become "standard business practise" under SISU

What's the Development coach wages? £60,000 a year? What's Blair Adams on? £120,000? That'll cover legal fees nicely.

He deserves to be sacked if he was the one who told CT he could play football.

I like the fact he is a cov kid and went to my old school but god if I can't get a game over him they I be damned as the Americans say.

When the shining light of out otherwise depressing existence as a club is the academy, it surely doesn't bode well when we lose a second academy director in 12 months.

Well I've been pondering this matter for a few days and seeing where we're going ,I fail to see the need to keep category 2 status .Maybe that's the restructuring aspect to this .
