So the business done was not great. Similar to selling McSheffery and getting McKenzie and Kyle in return.

Yeah, in hindsight it would have been better to keep Turner, of course. All you can really do is make the decision you feel is best at any given time, and then have restful nights. I've got no issue with the logic of the deal at all; had it swung the other way (ie McDonald being an effective goalscorer), then it would likely have been a net gain for the squad and the club.

Agreed. However, you would have hoped that someone would have assessed McDonald and concluded his general fitness levels would prevent him from making an immediate impact and looked elsewhere. Number 2 on AT's list perhaps.

Because they use it in America to distinguish from American Football people assume it is an Americanisation. It is not. It is of course short for Association Football, and was actually used in this country for our game before the singular term "football" was used. It annoys me as much as those that say American Football shouldn't be called football as they do not use their feet, despite the fact it is actually closer to the original rules of football than Association Football.

I'm sure you don't honestly believe that. According to Rotherham we put bids in for Le Fondre but they were well short of their valuation.

To clarify;

“Cody is an exciting player who has a proven track record.

"We believe that he is capable of producing at this level and we are delighted to have him on board.

“I have been looking at him for a considerable time and he was my number one choice as a recruit so I am delighted we have secured his services.”

Fees are undisclosed but McDonalds is estimated at £400,000 and Le Fondre £350,000

None of the selling decisions at the club are within Thorn's parish, and to insinuate so is to be either mischievous or unprepared to see where the power lies in that regard.

I do though, believe that after SISU received an offer and elected to cash in their asset, that they agreed to give Thorn a percentage in order to appease fans - hence the McDonald purchase.

The quotes attributable to Thorn are those which any sane individual would make under the circumstances, and shouldn't be picked apart in order to create a conspiracy theory

So selling turner for 750k and brining in McDonald for 400k was all SISU doing then your saying? So why is it when a loanne comes in its a great masterwork by Thorn, when a transfer in hindsight has gone Pete tong it's SISU's fault.

Even if AT was 100% responsible for the decision, it doesn't mean that it was a bad one. The others wouldn't have attracted a ton of interest at the time, and Turner had spent a considerable length of time being injured.

It has been a bad one. Turner playing his best football ever and weve been left with a striker whose in the same doctors space as Keith oneill and runnar normaann. How can you honestly say we got a good deal there?

This is a silly thread, and those who think for one moment Thorn was anything to do with the deal is making mischief with nothing more than wild conjecture at their disposal.

If we come back to the central point of the thread, has anyone actually bothered to think back to the deal? The McDonald / Le Fondre twists only came after.

The Turner deal itself was structured with athlete-extraordinaire Jon Parkin coming to us. Anyone actually bother to remember? But he failed his medical.

Parkinson's style of play is so contrary to Thorn's ethos that even the Telegraph at the time commented on the strangeness of the personnel choice..

So, did Thorn choose to sacrifice Turner to get in McDonald? Don't be silly

Of course.

I know what really happened. Nasty old sisu held thorns family until he said these things. Probably held him in the same cellar as brinner and all those soc protesters.

They then took a couple of grand of the turner fee and bribed journalists to make the McDonald fee up. They gave norwich a tin of economy baked beans for him. The biggest scandal is thorn had to pay for them out of his own salary. As we know he already is paid below the minimum wage. Panorama are on the case.

If you remember the sale of Turner was not done in time to get ALF. McDonalds goals last season were from all around the area. I am not writing him off yet as he has been injured.

So you think AT should have said " I didn't want McDonald as my 1st choice. I wanted other players, but they cost too much and wanted a decent wage. Sisu wanted to sell yet another player before I could bring a striker in. All the better available strikers were gone before they let me have £30 for a train ticket for any players to come to us so I ended up having to get Cody in. Yes, he scored lots of goals last season but not sure if he can move up to the Championship"

Forget it Astute. The Parkin fact, not conjecture, nails it. There's no way back for the mischief-makers unless they want to carry on and look really, really silly.

For a change....l

Nope. I'm saying that some folk need to read the title of the thread.

Selling Turner to get McDonald is an urban myth of those who wish to slight Thorn's judgement at every turn. I am critical of him when he deserves it, but equally pride myself on being sufficiently equal handed o know when something was nothing to do with him.

The reality wasn't Turner out to get McDonald in. Or Turner out to get Le Fondre in. It was Turner out to get Parkin in.

And if anyone wants to pin that one on Thorn, they're deserved on an instutionalised environment.

What Thorn said with reards McDonald is irrelevant to the central point of the thread

I wonder if, when Thorn goes to scout certain players, the stewards advise him that he's not allowed in the ground "on orders from Coventry City". Bet they offered to pay his petrol if he wanted to watch Sam Parkin though.

To try and pin selling Turner on Thorn is childish and simply designed to undermine him.

Sort your facts out before you start calling people silly. Parkin was only coming in because Juke was going to Boro. Once the parkin deal fell through, Juke deal was pulled.

If Turner didnt sign for Cardiff we wouldn't have signed McDonald. Simple as that. So Thorn did have something to do with it because he wanted a striker in and admitted we had too many centre halves.

Sort your life out.... hahahahaha (Who's the Childish one eh)

No-one's pinning it all on Thorn but he definitely had involvement in the sale so he could bring in a striker.

Here's a hypothesis....

SISU get an offer for Turner from Cardiff who want to offload Parkin. Parkin turns up at City, as reported in the papers, and dosn'tpass his medical or can't agree terms - whichever it is. So, that element of the deal is out of the window. However, Turner's agreed terms and there's no way back. All of this being done at SISU level, as even the Telegraph can't understand the choice of Parkin, given his style of play and Thorn's playing mantra.

SISU have a PR disaster on their hands, just at a time they don't need it. They go to Thorn and tell him they can release some of the Turner cash. Ask him if he wants a striker, which of course he does, and he gives them the names of McDonald and Le Fondre. Tells them McDonald would be his first choice but he's been injured and isn't match fit.

So, Le Fondre is courted, but - yet again - we make a donkey's arse of the negotiations. Again, as reported in the papers attributable to quotes from the Rotherham chairman. Le Fondre joins Reading, and the PR disaster for SISU is gaining even further momentum.

As a last ditch effort, they offer a crazy deal to Norwich for McDonald, which could total some £400K, but which is a compound of a small deposit - given his lack of match fitness - a value based on appearances, goals, us staying up, or going up, sell-ons, etc. in reality it costs us peanuts, but SISU's arse is saved.

McDonald arrives at the club and Thorn states that which is attributable to him.

Much of the above being conjecture, of course. But then again, so is much of the balance of what's posted on this issue. Difference being, there's an element of published fact against the above potential sequence

So your saying Thorn was bullied by SISU into buying McDonald and then told he has to say he was his number 1 target all summer???

I remember at the time, Cov fans saying what a great deal it was and Thorn was working wonders. Now its not worked out its SISU who made the deal.

Brilliant

What, trying hard by proving the two deals were inter-twined? Or trying too hard by proving the folly of the point of the thread?

Why on earth, in your wildest dreams, would you ever imagine, a manager would willingly sell any of his better players.
After all thats gone on regarding players coming and going to the Ricoh, it appears that some posters, even now, think that Thorn can influence, who comes and who goes, Its been blatently obvious for quite some time, that Sisu and only siSu, say who comes and who goes from the Football club.
The argument might hold water if the manaqer was allowed to recycle the transfer cash, but this has not happened, with pennies rather than pounds falling into Andy thorns war chest.
Tankie..

Okay, I'll go really steady with you, as on my above post I clearly stated that by statement was conjecture ( which means 'guess work') and you seem to think its fact. It's obviously early in the morning for you.

Are you now saying that the bigger picture was to sell Turner and Jutkiewitz, and bring in Parkin and McDonald? Two strikers?
