My daughter started hers today at the local primary school as she wants to be a teacher .
When I was at school I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do so I said something in retail hoping I’d get to work at HMV or virgin I ended up working at Iceland for the 2 weeks in December the shop floor staff were great though.

Yep. I chose a sport related placement and they placed me a the Forum Tenpin Bowling. Didn't turn up.

Ended up doing a couple of days in my local newsagents.

I walked out of school at 15, hitch-hiked to Essex to live with me Dad and sister and that was it. Got a job in a small supermarket stacking shelves. That was in January 1969.

An accountancy firm, up near the Ricoh (which obviously wasn’t there at the time).

It was shit.

However, they did give me a cheque for £25 at the end of the two weeks which was a bonus.

Went to work with my Uncle in Nuneaton (had to cycle it from Holbrooks!), Landscape Gardening and he gave me some money when I'd finished too.

Hard graft but loved it!

Like Houch left school at 15. No qualifications at all but I worked on Saturdays on building sites with my dad, and he got me labouring jobs. I loved it fit as a fiddle shovelling sand, carrying bricks, and unloading lorries.
Would they allow a fifteen year old lad to do that today, no would be the answer.

There was no such thing in my day (early to mid 1960's).
Many kids did a paper round (newspaper delivery).
That was about the most experienece anyone had as far as I'm aware.

Managed to get it fixed so I worked with my stepdad at the roofing company he worked for. For 2 weeks, I was a director.

(Well, I sat in the passenger seat of their delivery lorry, Reading a map and directing the driver where to go.)

I spent a fortnight at an estate agents. Incredibly dull but I was allowed out on my own to show a factory to a couple of prospective buyers. When showing them the secure area out back I managed to get us locked outside. It must have been real professional looking when I had to scale the security gates to try and let them back in...

I worked at 'Motor Panels (Limited) Coventry' in Holbrooks.
I was a young whippa-snappa, but i wasn't stupid either, and that helped me.
First day I was a bit nervous, the guys gave me a bit of abuse etc, but i gave some back too and i think they liked that.
I was asked to nip out and get the paper and some milk and when i came back i made a cup of tea for all of them in the spray department and as i didn't moan about it, that was my job for 2 weeks.
They'd give me money the afternoon before and i'd bring the papers and milk in and make everyone tea, it was great.
I'd then sit in one of the cabs and chill and listen to the radio all day... bloody loved it.
Never learnt a thing mind!

I went to a vets for 2 weeks. I stood in on the operations and helped with the animals. 3 things stick in my mind.
The first was a dog who’s ricker had split. They nitrogen froze the tear but as they did, the dog did the biggest and smelliest shit on the table.
The second was a big fuck off Alsatian cross Rottweiler than was hit by a car and got rushed in. I had to hold it still whilst the vet got ready. It was sedated but started to lift its head up towards me when I was holding it down. It had a big gouge in its head and you could see the fracture in its skull. Shit the life out of me.
On my last day some old Italian woman came in just as I’d gone through reception and handed me this cockatoo which was stiff as a board and she was shouting and screaming in Italian. Looked like it’d been dead for days. It must have looked like s monty python sketch.

Coventry Trophy Centre in Coundon. Spent two weeks engraving the adhesive plates and sticking them onto the trohous (mainly Sunday League)

As I live in Wyken I had to take buses across teon, took me an hour!

Still, got paid £50 for the pleasure!

Insurers won’t let them. When I taught we were always trying to get under 16s into construction but could never do it.

Never did mine. Was supposed to be Hawk Cycles but my sister was graduating high school after a year in the States and the school let me miss it to go to Kentucky for two weeks instead.

That's a place I've not heard of for a while. My grandad worked there.

Did mine at Alders (primark building). Complete waste of time, they just had a big sale on and I had to peel the sale labels of about 10,000 items. After 2 days I just got my mum to phone in sick for me.

I did two weeks at J&J Radiators in Hillfields, absolutely loved it, the first week was a bit boring doing filing and answering the phone, the second week was much more enjoyable, had a go at making number plates. The boss gave me £4.50 on the last day as either a thank you, or a fuck off and never come back.

The council also sorted you out with a bus pass, and remember my mum and dad bought me a Sony Walkman to listen to some tunes on route.

It wasn't allowed back then either, although it didn't stop anyone.

You had to be 18 to work on a building site, on licenced premises and probably some other jobs I don't know about.

There was an exception for relatives of the person who owned a business so for example the 16 year old daughter of a pub landlord was allowed to work as a barmaid.

I also knew a 16 year old who worked as an 'apprentice' on a bulding site for very little money.

Few people knew about about the regulations and even fewer cared.

Did mine at AXA. Basically data entry setting up or amending people's policies. Saw a few policies of some famous people inc footballers and actors. Sums involved you can see why some people are tempted to bump people off!
